This year s club finished 5th in the overall standings, the first time since that 2013 season in which they finished above 7th in the West. The Snappers 16-11 July was the first winning month since June 2013, a stretch that spanned 24 months..500 DAYS OF SUMMER: Beloit had the same amount of wins & losses 18 times in 2017 including 14 occasions in the first half alone. CLOSE GAMES: 89 of the Snappers 138 games in 2017 were decided by 3 runs or fewer & they were 41-48 in those games. Their 48 one-run games tied Peoria for the 2nd-most in the Midwest League behind Kane County s 52 one-run finals. HELPFUL TO GET A HANDFUL: When the Snappers scored at least 5 runs in a game, they were 42-12. Beloit started the season 21-0 when they scored at least 7 runs & finished with a 32-4 mark. FLAIR FOR THE DRAMATIC: Beloit pulled out 20 victories in their final at-bat of the game including 9 walk-off wins. They did so in a variety different ways; 6 go-ahead singles, 3 home runs, 3 sacrifice flies, 2 Nate Mondou triples, 2 suicide squeezes, 1 double, 1 walk, 1 wild pitch, & 1 fielder s choice all contributed to those last at-bat wins. Eric Marinez & Mike Martin each were chased down by the water cooler twice with walk-off winners. AFTER 8: The Snappers were the only team in the Midwest League with a perfect record when they led after the 8th inning, 46-0. They also won a league-best 11 games tied after 8 innings & also won 2 times when they trailed after the 8th. The Snappers trailed 6-4 after 8 frames in their first road game of the year in Cedar Rapids & scored 3 in the 9th, including the go-ahead triple by Nate Mondou to win 7-6. The 2nd occurrence was on May 30 vs. Clinton as Eric Marinez erased a 7-6 deficit with a walk-off, 2-run single to give the Snappers an 8-7 victory. GETTING DEFENSIVE: Beloit outfielders led the Midwest League with 53 outfield assists as Luke Persico led the Midwest League with 16 & JaVon Shelby also finished in double figures with his 10th on the last day of the season. Collin Theroux caught the most runners attempting to steal (38) & led all Midwest League catchers in caught-stealing percentage (44.7%). The Snappers also turned 130 double plays, 5th-most in the Midwest League & just short of a new club record (134 in 2007). STEINY-STONE: In his 10th season in a managerial role, Scott Steinmann picked up his 500th win as a minor league manager on May 30 against Clinton, one of his former teams. LEAGUE LEADERS: Xavier Altamirano s 3.59 ERA finished 7th among Midwest League qualifying pitchers while Matt Milburn ended 2nd in the league in innings pitched (141) & strikeouts (136). ZACK ATTACK: Zack Erwin led the pitching staff with a 2.08 ERA (min. 50 IP) & led the Midwest League with 3 Midwest League Pitcher of the Week awards. His 3rd nomination came after the 5th no-hitter in Snappers history on August 23 vs. Quad Cities when he threw 6 hitless innings before Joe Camacho finished the no-no with a 3-inning save. That was the first combined no-hitter in club history, the first since May 1, 2010 & the first 9-inning no-hitter since July 26, 1996. POSITION PLAYERS PITCHING: Position players made 6 total appearances on the mound in 2017 & did not allow an earned run. MIGHTY MARTIN: Mike Martin finished the season with an even.300 batting average, the first player to hit.300 for Beloit with at least 250 at-bats since Boog Powell hit.335 in 2014. Martin led the Athletics organization with 27 stolen bases, 24 with the Snappers. Chris Bostick s 25 steals in 2013 are the most by a Snapper during the A s era. BUILDING THE ROSTER: 41 total players put on a Snappers uniform in 2017 & 11 players earned promotions. 9 players on the Opening Day roster were on the active roster for all 138 games (Xavier Altamirano, Heath Bowers, Matt Milburn, Jason Goldstein, Collin Theroux, Eric Marinez, Miguel Mercedes, Kyle Nowlin, & JaVon Shelby). The Snappers only used 2 catchers for the entire season (Goldstein & Theroux), the fewest by any team in Minor League Baseball. Dakota Chalmers was the only member of the Athletics top-30 prospect list to play for Beloit in 2017. Additionally, 11 former Snappers made their Major League debuts during the 2017 season with 7 different Big League clubs.
