Coastal is 5-14 in those contests with a pair of wins over both LSU and Clemson along with a win at Auburn. Coastal continued its run of play against Power 5 Conference schools last season as the Chanticleers welcomed Auburn to Conway on Dec. 2 and traveled to Wake Forest on Dec. 18. The Chants dropped both games by a combined 10 points, after cutting both deficits to within a single possession in the final minute of play. This season CCU has faced three Power 5 schools; at Alabama to open the season, at Wake Forest and at Auburn. COASTAL VS. Wilson Moving Up Scoring List; Named Preseason All Sun Belt Senior Elijah Wilson enters his senior campaign on the hard court with 1, 375 career points, placing him 10th on the all time scoring list at Coastal Carolina...He averaged a team-leading 13.7 points per game last season scoring a total of 453 points...for his career he is averaging 13.6 points per game...with the Chanticleers entering a new conference there is not a lot of information out there about CCU, but the coaches know who Wilson is by naming him to their preseason All Sun Belt Second Team. Wilson s Move Up the List Tony Dunkin 1989-93 2,151 Jack Leasure 2004-08 1,893 Tony Whittington 1979-83 1,631 Keke Hicks 1992-95 1,622 Elijah Wilson 2013-1,578 (through 12/19) Derek Wilson 1985-89 1,492 Anthony Raffa 2010-13 1,470 Torrey Butler 1998-03 1,467 William Calvin 1984-88 1,465 Joseph Harris 2005-10 1,444 For only the second time this season, Wilson failed to scored in double figures during a game...he tied his season-low with eight points against Wofford. He will enter Sun Belt Conference action with 1,578 points needing 45 points to move into fourth place among all-time leading scorers. He is only one of five players to score over 1,500 career points at Coastal Carolina. He has a ways to go before passing Keke Hicks (1992-95) and Tony Whittington (1979-83) to move up even further. Strong Nucleus Returns for Chants The Chants may have lost three starters off last season s 21-win season, but that does not mean there are not any players coming back...starters Elijah Wilson (13.9 ppg) and Jaylen Shaw (11.1 ppg; 129 assists) were both team leaders last season who return coming off double-digit scoring averages. Colton Ray-St Cyr returns after starting 12 games a season ago while Michel Enanga comes back after missing all but nine games last season due to injury...other returners are Kevin Holmes, Jr. (22 GP), Christian Adams (14 GP) and Josh Coleman (10 GP). Newcomers Dot the Roster CCU has reached out and brought in six newcomers; three freshmen and three junior college transfers. Demario Beck, Jaylan Robertson and Joseph Williams-Powell are the three transfers while Amidou Bamba, Artur Labinowicz and Josh Peterson are incoming freshmen... All six players will have the opportunity to see a lot of action. Ellis Closing in On Win 800 Coastal Carolina head coach Cliff Ellis is the fourth-active winningest coach in Division I with 796 career victories. With nine more wins he will become the third active coach with at least 800 career wins. He is 16th all-time in NCAA history for career wins (regardless of affiliation with a minimum 10 head coaching seasons at NCAA schools), and is the sixth-active winningest coach across all NCAA classifications. He became the first head coach in NCAA history with 170 wins at four different Division I programs with the Chanticleers 68-56 victory over UNC Asheville on Feb. 3, 2015. Men s Basketball Inks Three Early Signees Coastal Carolina head coach Cliff Ellis announced three student-athletes as part of the 2016-17 recruiting class. Ajay Sanders, Tony Jackson and Jaylen Sebree have committed to the Chanticleers to continue both their educational and basketball careers. Ajay Sanders Winterville, N.C./Olney Central College/Greenfield School Guard 6-4 195 Sanders is a versatile guard with the ability to play and defend multiple positions...he is an excellent rebounder and is averaging over 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists per outing at Olney Central College. Ellis on Ajay: We are very excited to add AJay to our basketball family. We will lose two senior wings going into next year. Having played in junior college, AJay gives us experience moving forward. He is a big guard that has basketball savvy and does so many things well. He can really shoot the basketball, is a very good passer, and rebounds extremely well for a guard. AJay is a young man of great character and a very good student, just a great addition to our program. Tony Jackson Fort Knox, Kentucky/North Hardin High School Guard 6-4 200 Jackson has been listed as a three-star recruit by Scouts and has been a standout at North Hardin High School. Ellis on Jackson: What a step in the right direction going into the Sun Belt Conference. Tony is the number 2 rated player in KY and will be a really good player for us. He is an excellent shooter with an excellent body. I think he is going to be an excellent player for us. I m excited to have him. Jaylen Sebree Hopkinsville, Kentucky/Christian County High School Forward 6-6 175 Sebree is a highly respected small forward out of Kentucky and depending on which scouting service you listen to is listed anywhere from a three to a four star recruit. Coastal Carolina University Joins Sun Belt Conference in 2016 Coastal Carolina University President David A. DeCenzo announced on Sept. 1, 2015 that the CCU Chanticleers athletic programs will join the Sun Belt Conference effective July 1, 2016. The Sun Belt Conference, headquartered in New Orleans, La., was established in 1976 and began sponsoring football in 2001 as a member of the FBS. In addition to football, the Sun Belt Conference sponsors baseball, men s basketball, women s basketball, men s cross country, women s cross country, men s golf, women s golf, men s soccer, women s soccer, softball, men s indoor track & field, women s track & field, men s outdoor track & field, women s outdoor track & field, men s tennis, women s tennis and women s volleyball. The Sun Belt Conference has earned ties to seven bowl games since its football beginnings 15 years ago. No football conference in history has ever boasted as many bowl relationships in its first two decades of existence. A worthy football team in the Sun Belt can be in the national championship picture, and the league is a permanent part of the Group of Five that will send its highestrated champion to a premier bowl game. CCU sports will begin competing in Sun Belt conference play as of July 1, 2016, with the exception of the football program, which will transition to its first year of full FBS status in 2018. During the transition, CCU will compete as a Sun Belt member in 2017 and have the opportunity to compete for the conference football championship, but will not be eligible to participate in the postseason. Coastal Carolina becomes the 12th member of the Sun Belt Conference, joining Appalachian State University, Georgia State University, Georgia Southern University, Troy University, University of South Alabama, Arkansas State University, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, University of Louisiana at Monroe, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, University of Texas at Arlington and Texas State University. Ellis on Sebree: At 6 6, Jaylen is very skilled guard who can play multiple positions for us, Ellis said. He gives us the length and athleticism we want to compete for Sun Belt Championships. He is great scorer but also an excellent passer. He is one of the top rated players in Kentucky and is going to be a great player for us. I m excited to have him. 10
