The Cougars are a very experienced team with plenty of returning starters, including the player many think is the top returning quarterback in the Pac-10. Coach Mike Price is in his 14th year at the WSU helm and is the current dean of the Conference coaches. So if you are looking for a favorite for the 2002 Pac-10 crown, why not the Cougars? OFFENSE: Experience abounds on the Washington State offensive unit that averaged 35.2 points and 438.6 yards per game last season. Heading the cast is quarterback Jason Gesser, who embarks on his third year as the starting QB having tossed 42 touchdown passes the last two years, including 26 last season. Gesser led the Pac-10 in passing (248.1) and total 2001 Results (10-2, 6-2 in Pac-10, tied 2nd) W 36-7 Idaho W 41-20 at Boise State W 51-20 California W 48-21 at Arizona W 34-27 Oregon State W 45-39 at Stanford W 53-28 Montana State L 17-24 Oregon W 20-14 UCLA W 28-16 at Arizona State L 14-26 at Washington W 33-27 Purdue (Wells Fargo Sun Bowl) offense (257.5) last year and was named second-team All-Pac-10 quarterback (behind Oregon s Joey Harrington). Gesser loses 1,000-yard receiver Nakoa McElrath, who led the Pac-10 in receptions last year, but still has quality targets coming back. Returning is basketball refugee Mike Bush, who broke out last year with 46 receptions for 959 yards (20.8-yard average) and 10 TDs. Jerome Riley and Collin Henderson also return and Florida State transfer Devard Darling should add another quality receiver. There is little experience at tight end as redshirt freshmen Tim Burnette and Adam West will compete for time. Senior John Tippins is the most experienced running back returning and big things are anticipated from JC transfer running back Jermaine Green. The offensive line is a strength for the Cougs. The headliner is All-Pac-10 guard Derrick Roche. Tackles Calvin Armstrong and Josh Parrish are back, as is center Tyler Hunt and guards Phillip Locker and Billy Knotts, giving WSU experience and depth up front. The 2001 version of WSU s defense paced the Pac-10 in turnovers forced (35) and interceptions (22) and was the league co-leader in QB sacks (36). Much of that unit is back, although the Cougars lost significant talent at safety and linebacker and will have some questions to answer in those areas. The strength of the defense should be the line, which returns both quality and quantity. Returning at tackle is Rien Long, second-team All-Pac-10 last year, and Tai Tupai. The end positions are well stocked with D.D. Acholonu, Isaac Brown and Fred Shavies all returning. Some new linebackers need to step up. Al Genatone and Ira Davis are probable starters outside and Pat Bennett and JC transfer Kevin Sperry will battle inside. Three-year starter Marcus Trufant returns at one corner position, and Jason David and Karl Paymah will look to man the other corner. Likely the biggest challenge the Cougars face is replacing the stellar safety duo of Lamont Thompson, the Pac-10 career interception leader, and Billy Newman. Erik Coleman is expected to step in at free safety and follow in Thompson s footsteps, while Virgil Williams will get first look at strong safety. Jason Gesser KICKING GAME: Washington State returns the first-team All-Pac-10 placekicker in Drew Dunning. who was the leading kick-scorer in the league last year. A new punter must be found to replace Alan Cox and the Cougars hope to improve the return game from a year ago. Conference miss - Oregon State 62 PACIFIC-10 CONFERENCE 62

DREW DUNNING, K, 5-11, 165, JR Earned first team All-Pac-10 honors in 2001 after connecting on 18 of 22 field goals, including a perfect 16 of 16 from inside the 40 yard line...named most valuable special teams player at the Sun Bowl after booting four field goals in Washington State s 33-27 win. JASON GESSER, QB, 6-1, 200, SR Enters his senior season on the Palouse on pace to break WSU s career records for passing yards (7,818), touchdowns (59), and total offense (7,698)...A second team All-Pac-10 selection in 2001...Has thrown for 5,422 yards and 42 touchdowns...led the Cougars to a 10-2 mark in 2001 and already has 22 career starts under his belt. DERRICK ROCHE, OG, 6-5, 295, SR Will anchor the Cougar offensive front this season, which returns four of five starters...earned first team All-Pac-10 honors in 2001 and honorable mention in 2000...Has started in 26 contests since breaking into the lineup against Arizona State as a redshirt freshman in 1999. MARCUS TRUFANT, CB, 6-0, 189, SR Received Pac-10 honorable mention in 2001 despite playing in just three Conference games...has eight interceptions in 25 career starts, good for 10th on the WSU all-time list...when healthy, was the cornerstone for a secondary that picked off 26 passes a year ago. MIKE PRICE, HEAD COACH Mike Price guided the Cougars to their second 10-win season in the last five years in 2001, culminating with a victory in the Sun Bowl over Purdue. He earned Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors after helping WSU reach its fourth bowl game in his tenure and was one of three finalists for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award. Despite being picked to finish last in the Conference, Price steered WSU into a tie for second place. Price and the Cougars continue to turn it around and back to the form of the 1997 Rose Bowl squad, following a couple of disappointing seasons. In 1997, Price led a Cougars team picked to finish seventh in the Pac-10, to a share of the Conference title and their first Rose Bowl appearance in 67 years. WSU compiled a 10-2 record for its best single-season mark since 1929, along with a Top 10 finish in the national polls, its best ever. For his accomplishments, Price was awarded the Pac-10's Coach of the Year Award along with the same recognition from the Sporting News, Football Writers of America and the Bobby Dodd Foundation. Now entering his 14th season at Washington State, Mike Price has become a living symbol of Cougar football. The energetic Price has blended the traditional wide-open WSU offensive philosophy with an attacking defensive scheme that has transformed the Cougars into a league factor year-in and year-out. With 60 career victories at Washington State, Price trails only Babe Hollingbery on the Cougars all-time list. Price has led WSU to three bowl games during his tenure. He was a finalist for the Football News Coach of the Year award in 1994 after guiding WSU to an 8-4 mark and a win in the Alamo Bowl. Price s 1992 squad produced the school s fifth bowl appearance in addition to the top pick in the 1993 NFL Draft Drew Bledsoe. Price came to Washington State after an eight-year stint at Weber State. Under Price, the Wildcats ranked third in Division I-AA in scoring, fourth in total offense and fifth in passing offense in 1988. Price led Weber State to a 7-4 record in his first year, snapping the Wildcats 10-year string of losing seasons. His 1987 squad finished 10-3, the best mark in school history. Price is no stranger to Washington State, this being his fourth stint in Pullman. He played for two years (1965-66) at Washington State before finishing his playing career at University of Puget Sound.
