Golf Course Maintenance Howdy Folks, The golf course is ready for your next shot. The staff has been busy addressing irrigation issues and working on general maintenance. Water management is one of our top priorities during this time of rainfall shortage. During our peak growing season, the staff has been very busy keeping the golf course watered. Watering is one of the most important aspects of how well a golf course plays and performs. We use two basic methods, large turf Mike Epps Golf Course Superintendent irrigation heads and hand watering. We have a little over 140 acres that can be irrigated through our irrigation system. The golf course irrigation system is controlled by a computer in my office that has a robust software package on it that does a lot of calculation to run over 980 stations on the course. On average, each station usually has at least two large irrigation heads on it. The green boxes you occasionally see on the golf course are called satellites and have as much as 48 station switches inside them. The stations are switched on and off by the irrigation computer for a given period of time to achieve a certain amount of precipitation. We are in the peak season for high evaporation rates. In the green industry, the term evapotranspiration (ET) rate refers to the water that is evaporated or transpired through a plant. According to the USDA the normal peak months in Dallas/Fort Worth are July and August. The USDA has the normal average ET for July at 11.55, and August at 10.09. What that means is an average of a little over a third of an inch evaporates a day. That s a lot of water when you consider the lake on holes seven and eight has 5.2 surface acres. The ET rate is calculated using a mathematical formula and years of research. The high and low temperatures have a great effect on the ET rate. As you can imagine high or hot temperatures can cause a high ET rate. We use ET rates as a base for our irrigation needs on the golf course. The goal is to water enough so that the grass stays alive, playable and not over water. We try to do the bulk of our watering at night to reduce evaporations. From time to time we do need to run sprinklers during the day to hand water dry spots. We also do a lot of hand watering on the fine turn areas, flowers and sod work. Hand watering allows us to spot water more accurately than the large turf irrigation heads that may have as much as an eighty foot radius. Thank you for your time. Mike Epps Golf Course Superintendent For your home lawn irrigation there is a great web site you should check out. https://waterisawesome.com/ is a web site that has great information how to water and how much to water your home lawns. Thank you for your efforts on using the purple top entry exit stakes on the golf course for cart traffic. By using this system, we have greatly reduced the need for yellow rope and stakes on the course. I hope to see you out on the golf course soon. Don t forget to give Mira Vista Landscaping Inc. a call 817-294-6617 for your landscaping needs. I appreciate your time and comments. If you have any questions or concerns please call or e-mail me (817-294-6615, mepps@miravistacountryclub.com ) or come ride the course with me.
