Working for tomorrow s wildlife TODAY! 3600 Thousand Oaks Dr., Suite 126 <> San Antonio, Texas 78247 <> 210/826-2904 <> 800/839-9453 <> FAX 210/826-4933 March 1, 2017 Dear Friend of TWA, We invite you to join us as a sponsor of the Texas Wildlife Association s 2 nd Annual Hunt to Table dinner in Austin. This event will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at Springdale Farm. TWA is excited to gather again at Springdale Farm, a sustainable urban farm owned by Glenn and Paula Foore, located just three miles east of the Capitol. Springdale Farm, provides locally grown produce to the city s finest restaurants as well as serves as an urban oasis for private events. Glenn and Paula will work in conjunction with one of Austin s most popular chefs, Chef Jesse Griffiths of Dai Due. The inspired menu will of course feature locally sourced food and wild game and pairings of local brews and wines. The event will include a tour of the farm as well as educational opportunities to engage our guests in TWA programs and events. Our goal is to plug the foodies into all-things-twa by providing immediate hands on opportunities. As a result of the Hunt to Table event held last April, the Texas Wildlife Association and the Texas Youth Hunting Program held their first adult hunt at the Little Blanco Ranch. You can read more about this on the next page. TWA s Membership Committee is making a specific financial appeal for underwriters of this event. We are seeking contributions to provide memberships for newcomers, the locale, meal, beverage, and production costs. Underwriting levels of $300, $600, and above are available. Your contribution will be acknowledged in our print and marketing material. Your support is vital to the success and you can be assured that you are contributing to TWA s innovative outreach effort! Hunt To Table Article and photos by KRISTIN PARMA Events such as Hunt to Table allow us to introduce a new population of Texans to the joys of hunting and show that our hunting heritage is about more than just pulling the trigger. It is about connecting ourselves to this beautiful state, with our families and with a healthy and sustainable food source. ~Bryan Jones, TYHP Field Operations Coordinator The Texas Wildlife Association will once again host Hunt to Table, a wild game dinner with a conservation message. This year s event will be on April 22, at Springdale Farms, Austin. Last year, this event was a hit amongst foodies and locavores, people whose diets consist principally of locally sourced food. Participants in the dinner received a TWA online membership and were treated to informative talks regarding where and how to harvest their own wild game. They also enjoyed spectacular dishes prepared by local culinary icons, Chefs Jesse Griffiths of Dai Due and Sonya Coté of Eden East. As attendees of the Hunt to Table event, three married couples were chosen to take part in a three-day guided hunt for management bucks and feral hogs on a private Hill Country ranch. The first of its kind, this event was focused on inexperienced adult hunters. Participants received comprehensive training on important hunting skills such as firearm safety, shot placement and game identification. Each hunter was assigned to a guide to mentor and help them on their journey during the hunt. Guides were TWA staff members and volunteers. Over the weekend a total of 12 feral hogs and one management buck was harvested, many of which were the participants first harvests. Not only did these first-time adult hunters have the opportunity to harvest their own wild game, they were treated to lessons on field dressing and processing their harvests into sausage. 22 TEXAS WILDLIFE APRIL 2017
T W A M E M B E R S I N A C T I O N First-time hunter Sheila Jegen received a shooting lesson from TYHP Field Operations Coordinator and Huntmaster Bryan Jones. In addition, the hunters enjoyed a comprehensive wild game tasting consisting of chicken fried dove and cured venison appetizers, javelina and mule deer sausage, as well as grilled white-tailed and axis deer. The majority of the wild game was donated from the freezers of the guides participating over the weekend. With the support that comes from new and renewing TWA members we hope to introduce more innovative and unique ways to inspire those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to connect with nature in the way that hunting provides.
