The two seniors have been a part of 80 wins in four years, the second highest total for a class in Hofstra s Division I history. Senior guard Loren Stokes is in third place at Hofstra with 2,067 points after breaking the 2,000-point plateau in last Thursday s loss to Drexel. He is 35 points away from second place, held by Rich Laurel (1973-77), and 155 away from the school record, held by Steve Nisenson Hofstra Head Coach Tom Pecora picked up his 100th career win in last Saturday s victory over George Mason (his current record stands at 100-80). Hofstra is the only school in the nation with two 20-point scorers: senior guard Loren Stokes (21.1 ppg) and junior guard Antoine Agudio (20.4 ppg). Stokes and Agudio are the highest scoring two-man backcourt combination in the country (41.5 ppg) through Wednesday s games. Stokes, Agudio and Carlos Rivera (11.7 ppg) are also the highest scoring three-man backcourt combination in the nation (53.2 ppg). The Pride has three 1,000-point scorers in its backcourt. Loren Stokes has 2,067, Antoine Agudio has 1,568, and Carlos Rivera has 1,111 giving the trio a combined 4,746 points. They also became the first Hofstra trio to score 20 or more in the same game in over 10 years in the Pride s loss to Old Dominion on Tuesday (Rivera tied his career high with 26 points, Stokes had 21 points and Agudio had 20). Junior guard Antoine Agudio has 84 three-pointers, seven shy of tying his own school record. Agudio broke the old school record with 82 as a freshman, and broke that record with 91 as a sophomore last year. His 257 career threepointers is 65 more than the old school record and ranks him eighth in CAA history. 2006-07 HOFSTRA SCHEDULE/RESULTS November 11 at Charlotte L 82-88 18 at Manhattan L 77-79 (OT) 23 vs. Hawaii (at Alaska Shootout) L 79-80 24 vs. Marshall (at Alaska Shootout) W 73-70 25 at Alaska-Anchorage W 75-65 29 at Siena W 84-80 December 2 GEORGIA STATE* W 62-59 5 at Stony Brook W 73-57 12 ST. The Crusaders also have some inside scoring with 6-10 center Tim Clifford, who averages 11.3 points after scoring 33 in Thursday s win over Navy. Holy Cross is a tough defensive team, giving up only 57.4 points per game, while averaging 9.7 steals per contest. All four meetings were held between 1977-78 and 1980-81, including a game at the Nassau Coliseum in 1978-79 that Holy Cross won 62-60. Inside Hofstra Basketball is a half-hour show which will air every week on Fox Sports New York on Fridays at 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., and on Saturdays at 10 a.m. The show will also air on College Sports Television (CSTV) every Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Senior Class: This year s two seniors, guards Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) and Carlos Rivera (San German, PR), won the 80th game of their four-year careers against George Mason on Saturday, and now stand at 80-39. Only the class of 2001 (91 wins) has won more games in the Pride s 34 years at the Division I level. Stokes and Rivera will be honored for Senior Day before the Holy Cross contest as part of their final regular season weekend home game. The Big 2-0: Hofstra picked up its 19th win of the season at George Mason on Saturday and is one shy of reaching 20 wins for the third year in a row. The Pride has won 20 games seven times in 34 years at the Division I level, five of which have come since 1998-99. Hofstra also had three straight 20-win seasons from 1998-99 through 2000-01, when current head coach Tom Pecora was an assistant under Jay Wright. Hofstra 20-Win Seasons Division I Year Rec. Hofstra lost despite having three 20-point scorers for the first time in 10 years, when Speedy Claxton, Lawrence Thomas and Tim Beckett accomplished the feat against Delaware on January 7, 1997. Senior guard Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) tied his career high with 26 points, and matched a career high with six three-pointers. Senior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) scored 21 points, and junior guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) added 20, giving the Pride 67 points out of its three-man backcourt. However, after Stokes pulled the Pride within 59-57 with 11:12 remaining, Lidonde hit back-to-back three pointers, and after Stokes made one of two at the line, Lidonde hit three foul shots to cap off a personal 9-1 run to stretch the lead to 68-58. Old Dominion built an 83-68 lead with 3:50 remaining, but three-pointers from Rivera and Zygis Sestokas (Vilnius, Lithuania) and two foul shots from Stokes got Hofstra back within 83-76 with the ball. However, Brian Henderson scored on a lay-up and Brandon Johnson hit three foul shots to help the Monarchs put the game away. Vasylius scored 20 of his 31 points in the first half to stake the Monarchs to a 45-40 lead at intermission, matching the highest total for a Hofstra opponent this season (along with Towson's Gary Neal). Lidonde finished with 13 points, all in the second half for the Monarchs. Henderson scored 14 and Gerald Lee added 13.

Stokes Joins 2,000-Point Club: Senior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) became the fifth player in school history to score 2,000 points on the first possession of the game against Drexel on Thursday, and now stands in third place with 2,067. He is also part of a three-man backcourt of 1,000-point scorers, as junior guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) has 1,568 points (eighth all time) and senior guard Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) has 1,111 (22nd). The last time Hofstra had three 1,000 point scorers was in 2000-01 (Norman Richardson, Roberto Gittens, Jason Hernandez), but Hernandez scored some of his points at New Hampshire as a freshman. The last time the program had three players with 1,000 points at Hofstra was in 1976-77 (Rich Laurel, Ken Rood, John Irving). 20-20 Vision: Senior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) and junior guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) are currently both over 20 points per game (Stokes - 21.1 ppg, Agudio - 20.4 ppg). They are the only teammates in the country who both average over 20 points. Virginia Military has also had a 20-20 combo for most of the season, but guard Chavis Holmes is currently at 19.7. Pride Among Nation s Highest Scoring Backcourts: Hofstra s three-man backcourt of senior Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY), junior Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) and senior Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) entered this season as the highest scoring three-man backcourt combination in the country returning from last year. The threesome averaged a combined 46.3 points per game last season, with Stokes averaging 17.4, Agudio right behind with 17.2 and Rivera chipping in with 11.7. This year, Hofstra s trio has averaged a combined 53.2 points, with Stokes (21.1) and Agudio (20.4) once again neck-and-neck for the team lead, and Rivera (11.7) also in double figures. That combined 53.2 points per game average ranks Hofstra tops in the nation among three-guard combinations, just less than a point ahead of New Orleans (52.6) through games of Thursday, Feb. 15. Among two-guard combinations, meanwhile, Stokes and Agudio (41.5) rank first in the country, leading New Orleans (39.8) by just less than two points. In fact, Stokes and Agudio are the secondhighest scoring set of teammates in the nation regardless of position, trailing only Virginia Military (48.2). Stokes Climbing The Hofstra Charts: Senior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) will end his career this year with his name prominently displayed in the Hofstra record books. He moved into third on the Pride s all-time scoring list with his 18 points against George Mason Saturday. He should also end up in the top five in school history in assists (currently sixth one shy of fifth) and steals (currently fifth), and is 17th in rebounding despite playing guard. Stokes is the only player in school history to compile career totals of 1500 points, 600 rebounds and 300 assists. The Pride had not lost a regular season home game since a 67-66 defeat to Old Dominion on January 19, 2005. Old Dominion also defeated Hofstra in the Postseason NIT last year, snapping an overall 21-game home win streak. Hofstra is now 68-21 all-time at the renamed Mack Sports Complex (formerly Hofstra Arena) since the building opened on January 2, 2000. The Pride is also 84-21 in its last 105 overall home games, dating back to 1997-98 in the old Physical Fitness Center. CAA Spoilers: The longest winning streak in the CAA this season is 10 games, shared by both Drexel (overlapping December and January) and VCU (during January). The one thing that both streaks have in common? They were both snapped by Hofstra. The Pride ended Drexel s 10- game streak with a 55-53 overtime win at Drexel on Jan. 11, while Hofstra ended VCU s 10-game streak on Jan. 31. Getting Better All The Time: Hofstra has improved its CAA record every season since joining the league in 2001-02, one year after winning an America East Conference championship in the 2000-01 season. That 2000-01 team had seven seniors on it, though, leaving Hofstra without a senior as it ventured into a new conference. The Pride s first season in the CAA saw it finish tenth at 5-13, although it reached the semifinals of the CAA Tournament. The following year saw the Pride improve to 6-12 in league play (ninth place), and it is has since improved from fifth to fourth to third. This year, the Pride is currently tied for third at 12-4, still giving it a chance to continue its climb. However, sophomore forward Zygis Sestokas (Vilnius, Lithuania) has stepped up this season to give the Pride yet another three-point weapon in its outside arsenal. Sestokas began the year with a career-high 16 points at Charlotte, then hit six three-pointers to break that mark with 18 points in a win at Alaska Anchorage. Sestokas has made just under 50 percent (55 of 121,.455) of his three-pointers this season, which is second in the Colonial Athletic Association through games of February 11. Lester, Johnson Sign With Pride: Swingman Nathaniel Lester and power forward/center Dane Johnson, both natives of Brooklyn, New York., signed national letters of intent with Hofstra during the early signing period. Lester is considered by some recruiting analysts to be the top scholastic senior in New York City this year, after averaging 24.5 points per game at Canarsie High School as a junior during the 2005-06 season, while leading the team to the Public School Athletic League (PSAL) semifinals. He was an All-PSAL selection from the New York Post following his junior year. Johnson is a 6-10, 290-pound center, who is entering his second season at Mt. San Jacinto College. Johnson helped the Eagles to a 24-11 record and an appearance in the regional finals as a freshman last year. Johnson also attended Paul Robeson High School in Brooklyn, New York prior to enrolling at Mt. San Jacinto College. Pecora Reaches 100 Wins: Hofstra Head Coach Tom Pecora won his 100th career game in the Pride s victory over George Mason on Saturday. His career record currently stands at 100-80 in his six years as the Hofstra Head Coach. After three seasons, his record stood at 34-56, but over the last three seasons, he has compiled a 66-24 mark (.733), including 21-9 in 2004-05 and 26-7 last year, to go along with the 19-8 mark so far this winter. He is now the seventh coach in school history to record 100 victories. Butch van Breda Kolff holds the school record with 215 career wins, spanning two tenures from 1955-62 and again from 1988-1994 (see chart below). Today s Promotions/Ceremonies: Hofstra will be honoring Loren Stokes and Carlos Rivera for Senior Day prior to the contest. Stokes will also receive his commemorative 2,000-point ball prior to the tip off. State Farm is the presenting sponsor of the game, and will sponsor a foam claw pointer giveaway. Hofstra Defeats St. John s For Holiday Festival Title: Junior guard and Tournament MVP Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) scored 24 points and senior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) added 13 points, six assists and four steals as the Hofstra Men s Basketball team captured the championship of the Aeropostale Holiday Festival with a 63-51 win over St. John s on Dec. 29 at Madison Square Garden. St. John s trailed 29-24 at the half, but used a 9-2 run, keyed by a pair of three-pointers from Eugene Lawrence to pull within 36-35 with 14:05 left. Hofstra answered the rally, though, with an 8-0 run as Stokes and Agudio each hit two foul shots around a pair of dunks from sophomore forward Chris Gadley (Amherst, NY) to give the Pride a 44-35 lead at the 10:06 mark. An Agudio threepointer stretched the lead to 49-39 with 8:25 to go, and after the Red Storm got within 49-44, another Agudio three-pointer stretched the lead back to eight. After a St. John s basket, senior guard Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) then scored on a back-door lay-up off a feed from Gadley and then hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to push the lead back to double figures. Hofstra was able to hold on for the win, pushing its lead to as many as 17 (63-46), before the Red Storm scored the final five points. After the Red Storm scored first, Hofstra used a 9-0 run to take an early 9-2 lead on a fast break lay-up from Stokes and never trailed again. The Pride stretched its lead up to as many as 10 points in the first half at 24-14 on an Agudio three-pointer from the left wing with 5:10 left in the half, before settling for a 29-24 lead at the break. Gadley had his second straight strong effort off the bench for the Pride, tallying eight points and seven rebounds. Agudio was joined on the All-Tournament team by Stokes, who hit the game-winning jumper with 2.2 seconds left in a 65-63 win over Saint Joseph s in the semis. Hofstra Joins Elite Company With Third Festival Title: With three Holiday Festival championships, the Pride is now in third place all-time for most titles in the 55-year history of the event, behind only St. John's (14) and Manhattan (4). St. John's, though, has made 41 appearances at the event and Manhattan has made 19, compared to only five for the Pride. The other schools with multiple titles include Kentucky, Providence, North Carolina State, Cincinnati, Ohio State, Duquesne and Pennsylvania. In a strange coincidence, both losses in that stretch have been in the Postseason NIT, a 53-44 loss to Saint Joseph s in 2005 and a 58-45 loss to Rutgers in 1999. It almost happened again last year in the NIT, but Old Dominion hit enough foul shots in the final minute to capture a 61-51 win over the Pride in the NIT quarterfinals. Hofstra has won 72 regular season games in a row when holding opponents below 60. In addition, this year Hofstra is 16-0 when holding opponents below 70. Defense Tells The Story (Part II): Hofstra is giving up 83.6 points per game in its losses. In its wins, opponents score only 63.1 points per game, a difference of over 20 points. Homewreckers: Hofstra won 21 straight home games over the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons before seeing the streak end with a loss to Old Dominion. The Pride s last previous home loss was also to Old Dominion on Jan. 19, 2005. However, turnabout is fair play as Old Dominion compiled a 28-2 home record over the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons. The team that gave it both home losses? Hofstra. Unlucky Seven: Hofstra has had five six-game win streaks in the last two seasons, but has lost the seventh game each time. Two years ago, though, the Pride had a nine-game win streak and a seven-game win streak to its credit. Beyond The Arc: Hofstra has made at least one three-pointer in 317 consecutive games, dating back to a loss at Boston University in 1996-97. No Baker s Dozens On The Turnover Shelf: Hofstra has been taking exceptional care of the ball as of late. The Pride has not had more than 12 turnovers since its overtime win at Drexel on Jan. 11 a span of 11 games. Liking Their Odds: 1800 of the Pride s 1976 points (91.1%) this season have been scored by odd-numbered players, including all 68 in Saturday s win over George Mason. Working Overtime: Hofstra is 14-3 in its last 17 overtime games, dating back to 1990-91, with Drexel accounting for two of the losses. I Guess He Knows The Rims: Senior guard Loren Stokes is averaging 8.1 rebounds per game at home. Away from home, he averages 4.7 boards a contest. Saved By The Buzzer: Hofstra defeated St. Francis 67-64 on Dec. 12, when the Terriers missed a tying three-pointer at the buzzer. Over Pecora s six seasons, opponents are 0-13 on meaningful (tying or winning) buzzer beaters, including his first three collegiate wins as a head coach in 2001-02 (against Florida Atlantic, Kent State and Illinois State). Hofstra has had game-winning three-pointers from Aurimas Kieza (vs. ODU last year) and Carlos Rivera (vs. Columbia in 2003-04), but overall Hofstra (2-16) and opponents (0-13) have combined to shoot 2-29 on meaningful buzzer-beaters in the Pecora Era. That figure does not count desperation shots beyond 25 feet. Feeling Green: Hofstra played its first six games of the 2006-07 season against teams with green as their primary color (Charlotte, Manhattan, Hawaii, Marshall, Alaska-Anchorage and Siena).

What They Are Saying The backcourt of Loren Stokes, Antoine Agudio and Carlos Rivera is as good a trio as there is at this level. Andy Katz, ESPN.com College basketball observers will undoubtedly be turning over every nook and cranny next season in search of the next George Mason. Hofstra, which returns all three of its standout guards, will be as good a candidate as any. Stewart Mandel, Sports Illustrated Looking for the next mid-major school to make a splash on the national scene? Take a good look at the Hofstra Pride, who boast one of the best backcourts in the country. Mitchell Light, Athlon Sports The best three-man backcourt you know nothing about -- Loren Stokes, Antoine Agudio and Carlos Rivera -- returns from a 26-win team. Gregg Doyel, CBS Sportsline Tom Pecora has the top scoring returning backcourt in the country. Do-it-all guard Loren Stokes teams with sharpshooter Antoine Agudio and defensive-minded Carlos Rivera to provide scoring, defense and experience. Jay Bilas, ESPN.com Pecora returns one of the top backcourts not only in the conference, but also in the country. Michael Litos, Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook Coach Tom Pecora welcomes back one of the most exciting backcourts in the nation in his three-guard attack. The backcourt has the capability to send the Pride deep into March. Lindy s College Basketball The talk around Hempstead is that the Pride may have the best returning backcourt in the country. Athlon Sports Magazine The guard trio of Stokes, Agudio, and Rivera combined to average 46.3 points per game. Granted, you might not take them over North Carolina s best three guards or Marquette s best three, but statistically, Hofstra s trio is the best, and Pecora likes his chances moving forward with them. Gary Parrish, CBS Sportsline Proud Pride fans aren t just fancying their guard corps as the CAA s best, they re boastfully comparing their trio to high-major backcourt tandems such as those at Kansas and North Carolina. And if the squad lives up to its potential, much of the New York metropolitan area might come aboard for the feel-good ride. Kyle Whelliston, ESPN.com "If guards are the keys to basketball success, experienced guards allow coaches to smile all season. So count on Hofstra coach Tom Pecora to be doing some grinning. The Pride welcome back the nation's highest-scoring backcourt." - USA Today The Pride put themselves on the map by building a critically acclaimed, three-winged backcourt from undervalued talent. Seniors Loren Stokes and Carlos Rivera and junior Antoine Agudio have become the nation's highest-scoring guard trio, averaging a combined 46.3 points per game, and are viewed as a serious threat for a Cinderella run in the NCAA tournament. Luke Winn, Sports Illustrated The Nation s Highest Scoring Backcourt
