PAC-10 NOTEBOOK A QUICK LOOK AT THE 2005-06 SEASON Here's a brief rundown of each team in order of the 2003-04 fi nal standings: ARIZONA - Despite losing All-Pac-10 performers Channing Frye (NBA fi rst round pick) and Salim Stoudamire (NBA second round pick), the Wildcats sitll return ten scholarship players with plenty of experience... Senior forward Hassan Adams is the heart and soul of the team. He was among the league s top 20 in scoring (12.7 ppg), rebounding (6.0 rpg) and steals (1.86 spg). He was impressive in the NCAA Tournament, posting 16.5 ppg on 28- of-48 (.583) shooting, while pulling down 8.3 rpg... Point guard duties are held down by capable junior Mustafa Shakur. When he dishes out fi ve or more assists in a game, the Wildcats are 28-5 (.848)... Senior guard Chris Rodgers can play both guard positions, giving the Cats fl exibility on the perimeter. Has served as a quality sixth-man and is team s best defensive player... Junior forward Ivan Radenovic continues to improve. He started 31 games last season while averaging 8.6 ppg/5.5 rpg... Sophomore guard Jawaan McClellan is a star on the rise and will be joined by another talented freshman class that includes guard J.P. Prince and forward Fendi Onobun. WASHINGTON - Like Arizona, the Huskies lose two All-Pac- 10 performers in Nate Robinson (NBA fi rst round pick) and Tre Simmons, and also are loaded with experience to make a run at the Pac-10 title... Coming off its most successful season since posting an identical school-record 29 wins during the 1938 season, Washington will look to senior guard/forward Brandon Roy to guide the Huskies in defense of their Pac-10 Tournament crown. He has the tools to be an All-Pac-10 performer after posting averages of 12.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.23 assists... Point guard duties may fall to sophomore Ryan Appleby, but he ll be surrounded by veteran seniors Roy, Mike Jensen (6.3 ppg/4.1 rpg), Bobby Jones (11.2 ppg/5.2 rpg) and Jamaal Williams (9.9 ppg/3.6 rpg)... A talented group of freshmen arrive in Seattle, highlighted by the arrival of local prep star forward Jon Brockman. Brockman, a McDonald s All-America selection, averaged 28.1 points as a high school senior... The Huskies are riding a home court conference winning streak of 16 games - the longest in school history. UCLA - The Bruins relied on three freshmen starters last season to get them back into the NCAA Tournament. Those three players are the Bruin's top returning scoeres - Jordan Farmar (13.2 ppg), Arron Afflalo (10.8 ppg) and Josh Shipp (9.3 ppg)... Farmar was a workhorse, logging a league-best 34.4 minutes per game for a freshman... To complement UCLA's youthful and talented perimeter will be the senior tandem of Ryan Hollins and Michael Fey at center. The two combined for 13.1 ppg and 8.2 rpg, but will be counted on to peform at a high level on a consistent basis... Fifth-year senior guard Cedric Bozeman returns from a knee injury that caused him to miss the entire 2004-05 season. As the Bruins starting point guard two seasons ago, Nick DeWitz, Oregon State he piled up a Pac-10 best 5.54 assists per game. He ll provide strong leadership to a young squad (nine players have yet to experience Division I caliber basketball) that includes standout freshmen Alfred Aboya and Ryan Wright. STANFORD - Senior point guard Chris Hernandez (15.2 ppg/4.03 apg/1.73 spg) is one of the nation s best. His gritty play and leadership has been key to Stanford's success...the Cardinal are counting on senior guard Dan Grunfeld to fully recover from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The All-Pac-10 performer averaged 17.9 ppg/5.5 rpg before the injury... Senior forward Matt Haryasz has a good touch for a big man. He averaged 12.5 ppg and 9.1 rpg, posting 11 double-doubles in the process. Ten of those double-doubles came over the course of the last 15 games of the season... Assisting Hernandez in the backcourt will be athletic sophomore Tim Morris (7.4 ppg/2.0 rpg) and senior Jason Haas. Haas posted a career-high 18 points in Stanford s upset of Washington. That victory may have been the key to Stanford s selection for the postseason... Depth could be an issue for the Cardinal, but their non-conference schedule should help the freshmen gain some quality minutes and experiecne. Of the team s fi rst 10 games, the Cardinal leave northern California for only one game (at Montana, Dec. 2). OREGON STATE - Fresh off their fi rst winning season and postseason appearance since 1990, the Beavers are primed for another successful season... They are deep on the perimeter with senior guard Lamar Hurd (3.00 apg/3.2 rpg), junior guard Jason 2 2005-06 Pac-10 Hoops Prospectus www.pac-10.org

Fontenet (3.00 apg/8.0 ppg), and long range shooters in senior Chris Stephens (142 career three-pointers) and sophomore Angelo Tsagarakis (OSU freshman record 45 three-pointers)... Senior forward Nick DeWitz (14.0 ppg/5.8 rpg/2.0 bpg), the Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year, sophomore forward Sasa Cuic (9.2 ppg/3.9 rpg), and junior center Kyle Jeffers give OSU a strong presence in the low post... Like their rivals, the Beavers need to find a way to win on the road, especially in Pac-10 play where they are 1-17 over the last two years. ARIZONA STATE - Juniors Kevin Kruger and Bryson Krueger head up a quality Sun Devil backcourt. The two combined for 109 three-pointers, while shooting at a 38 percent clip from beyond the arc. Kruger returns as the team s top scorer, averaging 11.0 points. He also passed out 3.44 assists per game... Senior Tyrone Jackson (3.6 ppg, 2.06 apg, 0.84 spg) and freshman Seketoure Henry will give the Sun Devils a strong perimeter game... The aggressive play of junior forward Serge Angounou. He s the club's top returning rebounder, and second among all returning Pac-10 players, collecting 6.5 rebounds per game. He s also the team s top returner in terms of steals (31) and blocked shots (12)... Highly-regarded FR forward Sylvester Seay has the talent to excel in the Pac-10 and while he may not make Sun Devil fans forget Ike Diogu (NBA first round pick), he should post some quality numbers in his first season. Aaron Brooks, Oregon Gabe Pruitt, USC WASHINGTON STATE - The Cougars continue to impress under coach Dick Bennett and his rebuilding process. The Cougars swept NCAA Tournament bound Stanford last season. Then knocked off Arizona for the first time since 1986, ending a 39-game losing streak to the Wildcats... The defensive-minded Cougars, who led the Pac-10 in scoring defense (56.9 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (.407), will again challenge offensive-minded teams... Sophomore point guard Derrick Low is the team s top returning scorer, averaging 7.0 points and a team-best 2.83 assists... Sophomore center Robbie Cowgill is the team s top returning rebounder, averaging 3.4 boards a game. He led all Pac-10 freshmen with 27 blocked shots... Both Low and Cowgill were rewarded for their solid freshman campaigns with Pac-10 All-Freshman honorable mention selection... While the Cougars have good depth on the perimeter with guards Kyle Weaver (4.8 ppg/3.2 rpg), Josh Akognon (3.9 ppg/1.4 rpg) and Randy Green (2.0 ppg/1.0 rpg), they'll need to count on the newcomers to provide rebounding and low post scoring. OREGON - The Ducks return nearly all their firepower for the 2005-06 season... Six juniors and six sophomores dominate the Duck roster... Junior point guard Aaron Brooks led the squad with 14.7 points and 4.63 assists per game. He logged 33.1 minutes per game, third among returning Pac-10 players... The next four players to lead the team in scoring last season were freshmen. A year older and a year wiser could make Oregon a dangerous team... Sophomore guard Malik Hairston earned Pac-10 All-Freshman honors after posting 13.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Bryce Taylor followed with 11.6 points per game, with sophomore forward www.pac-10.org 2005-06 Pac-10 Hoops Prospectus 3

PAC-10 NOTEBOOK Maarty Leunen and sophomore guard Oguchi Chamberlain contributing 5.6 points and 5.0 points respectively... Continued improvement from sophomore center Ray Schafer should help the Ducks in the paint. He s gained confi dence and worked on his endurance during the offseason... While the Ducks thrive at home in Mac Court, the road woes (3-7 road record) need to be overcome if Oregon is to continue playing in March. CALIFORNIA - The Bears welcome the return of sophomore forward Leon Powe, the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year in 2004. He sat out last season recovering from a knee injury. If he matches his freshman numbers (15.1 ppg/9.5 rpg), Cal will have one of the league's top inside/outside combinations in Powe and senior guard Richard Midgely. Midgely is among the league s top returning players in career scoring (919 points), three-pointers (134), assists (217), and steals (86)... The may have the deepest frontcourt in the Pac-10 with senior forward/center Rod Benson (13.3 ppg/6.3 rpg), athletic sophomore forward DeVon Hardin (4.3 ppg/4.5 rpg/26 blocked shots) and freshman center Jordan Wilkes... Six players listed on the roster stand 6-8 or taller... Junior guard/forward Marquise Kately will be expected to bounce back from a sophomore slump in which his scoring average dipped from 10.5 points per game on 53.5 percent shooting as a freshman to 9.3 points per game on 44.5 percent shooting last season... Look for junior Ayinde Ubaka to take control at point guard. If he stumbles, senior Martin Smith is more than capable to step in. The two split time at the point last season where they combined for 6.57 assists per game USC - First-year coach Tim Floyd will be welcomed by an explosive perimeter game. The top three scorers on last year s USC squad are sophomores Nick Young (11.1 ppg) and Gabe Pruitt (12.3 ppg), and junior Lodrick Stewart (12.1 ppg)... Pruitt and Stewart combined for 133 three-pointers, shooting 42.2 percent... With few returning letterwinners, starting spots are wide open, especially in the frontcourt... Although Floyd was hired in January, he did not assume on-fl oor coaching duties until after the season. That allowed him to scour the country for his fi rst recruiting class. He signed eight players, including junior transfer Abdoulaye Ndiaye and freshmen RouSean Cromwell. Those two post players should help fi ll the void left in the key by the departure of Jeff McMillan (9.6 ppg/6.9 rpg), Rory O'Neil (9.0 ppg/4.6 rpg) and Gregg Guenther (6.7 ppg/5.3 rpg)... This is the last season that USC will play in the spacious LA Sports Arena, before moving into the new state-of-the-art Galen Center, which will be completed prior to the 2006-07 season.
