2014-15 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Women s Basketball w Turner was the Gatorade National High School Female Athlete of the Year, the second ND women s basketball player in five years to earn the honor (Skylar Diggins 2009) and was the MVP of the McDonald s High School All-America Game before earning her fifth USA Basketball gold medal in August as a member of the USA Under-18 National Team at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Colorado Springs. w Turner and Westbeld are two of six McDonald's High School All-Americans on the 2014-15 Notre Dame women's basketball roster, along with junior guards Jewell Loyd and Michaela Mabrey, sophomore guard Lindsay Allen and sophomore forward Taya Reimer. u The Fighting Irish also are the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference champions, having swept through their inaugural campaign in the league with a 16-0 regular season record (winning the ACC title by four games over second-place Duke and Maryland) and three more victories en route to the ACC Championship crown. w Notre Dame is 378-80 (.808) all-time in regular season conference games and enters the 2014-15 season on a 36-game regular season league winning streak, since a 65-63 home loss to then-big EAST foe West Virginia on Feb. 12, 2012. u At the conclusion of the 2013-14 season, Notre Dame had been ranked in the Associated Press poll for a school-record 136 consecutive weeks (including the past 66 weeks in the AP Top 10, 62 of those in the top five), dating back to the start of the 2007-08 season. w Notre Dame s 136-week AP poll run is the sixth-longest active streak in the nation behind only Tennessee (531), Connecticut (393), Duke (263), Stanford (247) and Baylor (202). w Notre Dame has appeared in the top 10 of the AP poll during 14 of the past 18 seasons, reaching as high as No. 2 in each of the past three seasons (and never dipping lower than seventh). In 2013-14, the Fighting Irish were No. 2 in the final AP poll for the second consecutive season, the eighth time in program history (and fifth year in a row) Notre Dame appeared in the top 10 of the year-end AP poll. w No returning Fighting Irish player has suited up for a Notre Dame team ranked lower than No. 7 in the AP poll during her career. What s more, every Notre Dame returnee has played for an AP Top 5 Fighting Irish team virtually each week of their careers to date (all but the first two weeks of 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons). w The Fighting Irish have been ranked in the AP poll for 275 weeks during the program s first 37 seasons, with all of those appearances coming under current head coach Muffet McGraw (who ranks eighth among active coaches and 16th all-time in AP poll appearances). u Notre Dame ranks third in the nation with 167 victories in the past five seasons (2009-10 through 2013-14), trailing only Connecticut (183) and Stanford (170) in that category. u Senior guards Madison Cable and Whitney Holloway and senior forward Markisha Wright have helped Notre Dame to a 107-7 (.939) record in their first three seasons, far and away the most victories by a Fighting Irish class in its first three seasons behind last year s senior class of Natalie Achonwa, Ariel Braker and Kayla McBride, who was a part of 101 wins through the end of their junior years. w In their first three seasons, Cable, Holloway and Wright have helped Notre Dame to two NCAA national championship games and three NCAA Women s Final Fours (plus three conference regular season titles and two conference tournament crowns), as well as a 41-6 (.872) record against ranked teams (18-6 against AP Top 10 opponents). u Notre Dame will carry a number of winning streaks into the 2014-15 season: w 52 consecutive regular season wins (last loss: Dec. 5, 2012-73-61 vs. No. 3 Baylor at Purcell Pavilion) w 28 consecutive home wins (last loss: Dec. 5, 2012-73-61 vs. No. 3 Baylor at Purcell Pavilion) w 26 consecutive road wins (last loss: March 6, 2012-63-54 at No. 4 Connecticut in BIG EAST championship game) tied for fourth-longest road winning streak in NCAA Division I history (record: 30 by Connecticut from 2007-08 through 2010-11) w 35 consecutive regular season road wins (last loss: Nov. 20, 2011-94-81 at No. 1 Baylor in Preseason WNIT championship game) w 36 consecutive regular season conference wins (last loss: Feb. 12, 2012-65-63 vs. then-big EAST foe West Virginia at Purcell Pavilion) w 51 consecutive wins vs. opponents not ranked in AP poll (last loss: Feb. 12, 2012-65-63 vs. West Virginia at Purcell Pavilion) u Notre Dame will play half (15) of its 30 regular-season games against teams that advanced to the NCAA Championship last year, a group led by defending NCAA champion Connecticut (Dec. 6 - Purcell Pavilion), NCAA Final Four participant Maryland (Dec. 3 - Fort Wayne), NCAA Elite Eight teams North Carolina (Jan. 15 - Chapel Hill) and Louisville (Feb. 23 - Purcell Pavilion) and Sweet 16 qualifiers DePaul (Dec. 10 - Chicago) and Tennessee (Jan. 19 - Purcell Pavilion). w The Fighting Irish will play 17 regular-season games at Purcell Pavilion in 2013-14, a powerful home slate that includes visits from Connecticut (Dec. 6), Tennessee (Jan. 19), Duke (Feb. 16) and Louisville (Feb. 23). w Notre Dame aims to continue its remarkable success at Purcell Pavilion, with the Fighting Irish owning a 401-90 (.817) all-time record in 37 seasons at the facility, including a 78-5 (.940) record since the arena was renovated prior to the 2009-10 season. w For the first time in program history, Notre Dame will play an off-site home game, taking on Maryland in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec. 3 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It will be Notre Dame s third visit to the Summit City, but its first since Jan. 24, 1979 (a 49-41 win over IPFW). w Notre Dame will play 12 regular-season games against teams that were ranked or receiving votes in one or both of the major national polls at the end of last season, including six games against teams ranked in the top 10 of the final 2013-14 AP poll. w Notre Dame will play host to a regional round of the inaugural Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Women s Challenge, welcoming Holy Cross, Harvard and Quinnipiac to Purcell Pavilion for three days of round-robin competition (Nov. 23-25). The Fighting Irish then travel to Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, on Nov. 30 for the Showcase Day of the tournament, taking on Kansas at 1 p.m. (ET) in the second of four Hall of Fame Challenge games to be played at Mohegan Sun that day. w Notre Dame plays host to Connecticut in the 13th annual Jimmy V Women s Classic on Dec. 6 at Purcell Pavilion (3:15 p.m. ET on ESPN). The rematch of last year s NCAA national championship game (the first in Division I men s or women s history between two undefeated teams) will be the first Classic appearance for the Fighting Irish, and the first regular season matchup between the two rivals since Notre Dame s epic 96-87 triple-overtime win over the Huskies on March 4, 2013, at Purcell Pavilion to clinch the BIG EAST regular season title. u Notre Dame will play at least 26 of its 30 regular-season games on television this year, between commercial broadcasts and the ninth year of free web streams on WatchND (watchnd.tv). Included in this year s TV package are eight games on the ESPN family of networks (Dec. 6 Connecticut on ESPN and three Jan. 19 vs. Tennessee, Feb. 16 vs. Duke and Feb. 23 vs. Louisville as part of the ESPN2 Big Monday package; the Fighting Irish have won their last eight Big Monday games dating back to the start of the 2011-12 season). Notre Dame also will appear on the ACC/Regional Sports Networks broadcast four times (Jan. 4 at Syracuse, Jan. 15 at North Carolina, Feb. 1 vs. Wake Forest, Feb. 19 at Georgia Tech) the ACC-RSN reaches in excess of 51.4 million homes through many Fox Sports affiliates in the Eastern half of the United States (and additional coverage areas pending). All ACC games on the RSN package also can be seen via WatchESPN, subject to regional blackout. 2014-15 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Women s Basketball 2013-14 Season in Review u On the strength of a school-record 37-game winning streak (the longest by any Notre Dame program in a team-based sport since World War II), the Fighting Irish went 37-1 (16-0/1st in ACC) and advanced to the NCAA national championship game for the third time in four years (and fourth in program history), as well as the NCAA Women s Final Four for the fourth consecutive season (sixth time in program history). w For the second consecutive season, Notre Dame was ranked No. 2 in the final Associated Press and WBCA/USA Today polls (the last AP poll is taken before the NCAA Championship). These were the highest finishes in both polls for the Fighting Irish since their 2000-01 national championship season, when they finished No. 2 in the AP poll and No. 1 in the WBCA/USA Today poll. w Notre Dame led the nation in field goal percentage (.506), its first NCAA statistical national championship (in a category other than win-loss percentage) since 2000-01, when it led the country in field goal percentage defense, three-point percentage and blocked shots. Led by its sharp shooting numbers, Notre Dame placed among the top 20 in the nation in eight NCAA statistical categories last year, including top-five rankings in field goal percentage (1st -.506), scoring offense (2nd - 86.1 ppg.; the program s second consecutive season as the nation s second-highest scoring team), scoring margin (2nd - +24.4 ppg.), three-point field goal percentage (2nd -.402; the program s best mark from distance since a school-record.464 in 2000-01), assists (2nd - 20.1 apg.) and assist/turnover ratio (5th - 1.39). The Fighting Irish also ranked 12th in the nation in rebounding margin (+9.1 rpg.) and 19th in free throw percentage (.756). w Notre Dame set or tied no fewer than 19 single-season school records - most wins (37), highest winning percentage (.974), fewest losses (1), highest conference winning percentage (1.000), longest winning streak (37), longest winning streak to begin a season (37), most wins at home (17), most wins over top-10 opponents (8), most points (3,271), highest scoring average (86.1 ppg.), most 80-point games (29), most 90-point games (12), most 100-point games (5), most field goals made (1,227), most field goals attempted (2,423), most three-point field goals made (190), most assists (765), highest assist/turnover ratio (1.39) and fewest times fouled out (3). w Notre Dame finished a school record-tying fourth in the nation in average attendance at 8,694 fans per game (better than 95 percent of Purcell Pavilion s official capacity of 9,149, tops in the country among percentage of arena capacity filled). The Fighting Irish also posted their 14th consecutive NCAA top-16 attendance ranking, and 10th top-10 finish (eighth consecutive) in 2013-14 (including their fifth consecutive top-five showing), while attracting five sellout crowds, including both NCAA regional sessions (the only NCAA regional site in 2014 to sell out both sessions). Notre Dame has drawn 35 capacity crowds to Purcell Pavilion in the past five seasons after having a total of six sellouts in its first 32 years of competition. w For the second consecutive season and third time in her Hall of Fame career (along with 2000-01), head coach Muffet McGraw was the consensus National Coach of the Year, earning honors from the Associated Press, Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) and the Naismith Award. She s the first NCAA Division I coach to sweep those four major national coaching honors three times, and just the second to do so in consecutive season, joining Connecticut s Geno Auriemma (2008-09 and 2009-10). w Graduated senior guard Kayla McBride was a consensus first-team All-America choice, earning top honors from the Associated Press, WBCA, USBWA, John R. Wooden Award, espnw (unanimous) and Sports Illustrated. w Jewell Loyd earned a spot on the WBCA Coaches and USBWA All-America teams in 2013-14, in addition to garnering second-team All- America accolades from the Associated Press and espnw. McBride and Loyd became the second Notre Dame pair in as many years to make the WBCA Coaches All-America Team in the same season (Skylar Diggins joined McBride in 2012-13). Senior forward Natalie Achonwa also garnered All-America plaudits, picking up third-team honors from the Associated Press. w Loyd was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Notre Dame Regional, the first Fighting Irish sophomore chosen since Diggins at the 2011 Dayton Regional. Loyd was joined on the 2014 NCAA Notre Dame Regional All-Tournament Team by Achonwa and McBride. u The Fighting Irish also are the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference champions, having swept through their inaugural campaign in the league with a 16-0 regular season record (winning the ACC title by four games over second-place Duke and Maryland) and three more victories en route to the ACC Championship crown. w Notre Dame won its third consecutive outright regular season conference title (2012 and 2013 in BIG EAST), a first in the program s 37-year history. The Irish, who have earned 11 regular season championships across their various league memberships, had won three in a row in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference/Horizon League (1988-89 through 1990-91), but the first of those was shared with Loyola-Chicago. w The Irish were the first team in ACC history to win the conference title in their inaugural season as a league member (the ACC first sponsored the sport in 1977-78). w Notre Dame became the first team in ACC history to run the table in regular season play since 2007-08 (North Carolina went 14-0) and the first to go 16-0 in a league slate since 2002-03 (Duke). w The Irish were the fourth ACC school to win the conference regular season title by at least four games (first since Duke won by five games in 2001-02). w Notre Dame won its second consecutive conference tournament championship and seventh in program history. The Irish also collected backto-back league tournament trophies for the first time since a four-year run in the MCC (1989-92). w Notre Dame is 378-80 (.808) all-time in regular season conference games and enters the 2014-15 season on a 36-game regular season league winning streak, since a 65-63 home loss to then-big EAST foe West Virginia on Feb. 12, 2012. u McBride (3rd - San Antonio) and Achonwa (9th - Indiana) were selected in the first round of the 2014 WNBA Draft, with McBride matching Devereaux Peters (2012 - Minnesota) and Diggins (2013 - Tulsa) as the highest draft pick (and third consecutive lottery selection) in Notre Dame women s basketball history (the Fighting Irish are just the second program ever to field three consecutive lottery picks). w McBride was a unanimous choice for the 2014 WNBA All-Rookie Team after starting all 34 games for San Antonio and scoring 442 points, the most by a Stars rookie since the franchise relocated from Salt Lake City in 2003. The Erie, Pennsylvania, product ranked among the top 10 league rookies in scoring (3rd - team-high 13.0 ppg.), three-point percentage (1st -.396; also sixth among all WNBA players), free throw percentage (1st -.846; also 14th among all WNBA players), assists (7th - 1.7 apg.) and steals (7th - 1.0 spg.). She scored in double figures 20 times, including six 20-point games and a career-high 30 points on two occasions, both at home (May 28 against Tulsa; July 9 against New York), while leading San Antonio to the WNBA Western Conference semifinals (averaged 22.5 ppg. in two playoff games). w Diggins, who was a 2013 WNBA All-Rookie Team pick, earned first-team all-wnba honors in 2014 and was the league s Most Improved Player after finishing second in the WNBA at 20.1 points per game. A 2014 WNBA Western Conference All-Star starter, Diggins also wound up fourth in the league at 5.0 assists per game. What s more, the South Bend, Indiana, native started all 34 games for Tulsa in 2014, leading the Shock in points, assists, steals (1.5 per game) and minutes (league-leading 35.1 per game), while scoring in double figures 33 times, including 18 20-point games, four 30-point outings and a career-high 34 points on July 22 at San Antonio. Diggins added a team-high 27 points in the 2014 WNBA All-Star Game, the second-highest point total in the game s history. Notre Dame Women s Basketball Media Day (Oct. 8, 2014) / 3
