The Mavericks wrapped up the regularseason with a 33-23 overall and 20-10 conference record. The 30 plus wins marks the fifth time a team has recorded under head coach Debbie Hedrick s direction. UTA will face the winner of No. 3 Texas State and No. 6 Northwestern State on Thursday, May 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Bearkat Softball Complex. The Mavs closed out the regular-season winning two of three against A&M-Corpus Christi. After winning both game one and two, the Mavericks dropped game three which determined who would be named the SLC regular-season champions. Following the regular-season, the league announced the all-conference teams where eight Mavericks represented UT Arlington including true freshman Callie Collins. Collins was named the SLC Pitcher of the Year after posting an 18-9 record with a 1.60 ERA in 188.1 innings pitched. The first-team all-conference selection also recorded the second most strikeouts in the conference with 197 and held her opponents to a.187 batting average. Senior first baseman Rebecca Collom earned first-team all-slc honors for the first time in her career. Collom connected on a team high 12 home runs, bringing her career total to 36. Collom s 36 homers is first in UTA s all-time list. Juniors Erica LeFlore and Charne Office made their way onto the third team allconference team for their first time in their careers. Four Mavericks also made their way onto the honorable mention list as junior Courtney Zink, junior transfer Kersti Rowan, freshman Stephanie Gonzalez and sophomore Teri Lyles all represented UT Arlington. In their last meeting, the Islanders recorded a 2-0 shutout victory on Sunday, May 8, winning the league title. UTA faced the Islanders last season in the SLC Tournament where they eliminated them after winning a 3-2 decision in San Marcos, Texas. SERIES VS NO. 3 TEXAS STATE The Mavericks own a 56-42 series advantage over the Bobcats and are 3-0 this season. UTA swept the Bobcats in the first series of the season. UT Arlington faced Texas State twice last season in the conference tournament where they lost a 10-1 (5) decision and fell 4-1 in the final day of the tournament. SERIES VS NO. 4 MCNEESE STATE The Mavs have a 45-41 all-time series advantage over the Cowgirls. UTA went 1-2 against McNeese State this season in Lake Charles, LA. The Mavericks won game one but dropped two and three of the series. The last time the Mavs faced the Cowgirls at the SLC Tournament was on May 5, 2006 where they won a 2-1 decision in Natchitoches, LA. SERIES VS NO. 5 UTSA UT Arlington owns a 41-27 series advantage over UTSA. The Mavericks completed a three-game sweep over the Roadrunners this season on Apr. 2-3 in San Antonio. The last time the Mavericks faced the Roadrunners in the conference tournament was on May 8, 2009 in Lake Charles, LA where they dropped a 12-3 (5) decision. SERIES VS NO. 6 NORTHWESTERN STATE UTA owns a 38-33 series lead over the Lady Demons. The Mavericks finished the regular-season with a 1-2 mark over NWST. MAVERICKS PILE ON THE RUNS In a double-header against Prairie View A&M, the Mavericks plated 36 runs in the pair of wins... twenty-seven of the 36 runs came in game two... the 27 runs were the most runs scored by a team coach by Debbie Hedrick... the last time the Mavs scored 15 or more runs in a game was on February 24, 2007 against PVAM where they recorded 18 runs. Collins award marks the third by a Maverick in two weeks... Collins receives her second consecutive pitcher of the week honor... She improved to 5-1 on the mound and went 3-0 in the UTA Classic... Collins, a true freshman, recorded a pair of wins against Centenary and a win against Creighton... She finished the tournament with a 0.74 ERA in 19 innings pitched and recorded 34 strikeouts... Collins also held her opponents to a.183 batting average... She recorded a season-high 15 strikeouts against Centenary and followed that performance with 12 strikeouts against Creighton. 2011 SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT The 2011 SLC Softball Tournament is scheduled to begin on Thursday, May 12 and runs until Saturday, May 14 at the Bearkat Softball Stadium in Huntsville, Texas. SOFTBALL SWEEPS SLC PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARDS Rebecca Collom was named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week and freshman right-hander Callie Collins was named the Southland Pitcher of the Week Tuesday. Collom led the Mavericks at the 2011 Aggie Classic batting.588 with a 1.000 slugging percentage and a.579 on-base percentage. Collom connected on 10 hits, including four doubles and a home run. A native of New Boston, Texas, Collom also recorded seven RBI and scored two runs. Against No. 23 Texas A&M, Collom went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Collom recorded four multi-hit games this weekend. Collins finished the 2011 Aggie Classic with a 1-1 record on the mound. A native of Rusk, Texas, Collins led the Mavericks to an 8-3 win over Wichita State Feb. 18 and suffered a tough 4-0 loss to No. 23 Texas A&M. Collins finished with a 2.76 ERA in 12.2 innings pitched while holding her opponents to a.208 batting average. Collins also racked up nine strikeouts, eight of which came against Wichita State. MAVERICKS PICKED FOURTH IN SLC POLLS UT Arlington was picked to finish fourth in the Southland Conference by coaches and sports information directors in the preseason polls. UTA earned 70 votes in the coaches poll and earned 68 in the sports information director s poll. The Mavericks finished third in the regular-season and finished with a 29-25 overall record. COLLOM & LYLES NAMED TO PRESEASON TEAM Senior first baseman Rebecca Collom earned preseason First Team All-Southland Conference honors. Collom led the Mavericks last season batting.317 with a career-high 53 hits and 30 RBI. Sophomore Teri Lyles was named to the preseason Second Team All-SLC team. Lyles was named last year s SLC Freshman of the Year, after finishing 2010 with a league-best 1.78 ERA in 219.2 innings pitched. FAMILY TIES Second baseman Courtney Zink will have a very familiar face playing alongside her as younger sister Taylor Zink looks to take the third base position. The sisters took to the diamond during the Mavericks eight games during the fall season. T. Zink impressed the Mavericks coaching staff, connecting on a grand slam against McLennan JC. THREE MAVS EARN ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM HONORS Three Mavericks were named to the North Texas Classic All-Tournament Team... Senior Rebecca Collom and freshmen s Callie Collins and Taylor Zink were all named to the all-tournament team... Zink led the Mavericks offensively as she connected on seven hits, including a double and drove in three RBI for a.467 batting average... Collom finished the tournament going 4-for-10 with three RBI, a home run and a double for a.400 batting average... Collom recorded her fifth home run of the season and 29th of her career against Wichita State... Collins went 2-1 in the tournament and finished with a 0.78 ERA in 18 innings pitched. She recorded 18 strikeouts and held her opponents to a.206 batting average.
