A Magical Scholar During her junior year at Michigan State University, Kirsten Gutowski decided to get hands on with her major hospitality management. She knew few internships would provide such real world experience in her chosen field than at Walt Disney World, the world s most visited tourist destination. In the pursuit of such an opportunity, Kirsten, a native of Canton, applied to the Disney College Program, which offers internships at Disney theme parks and resorts to college students from across the country and around the world. These programs also offer college classes taught through Disney University. There are several hospitality classes, as well as exploration classes available to all. The Evans Scholarship has helped me do this by encouraging me to branch out of my comfort zone. Living in a house with a diverse community has allowed me to ease into new situations without issue. It has prepared me to network and grow through people I meet and work with. Kirsten soon found herself en route to the sprawling central Florida resort and was given a job as a seater at the Liberty Tree Tavern, a popular eatery at Disney s Magic Kingdom theme park, frequented by hoards of hungry diners each day. Kirsten said the controlled chaos of working at The Happiest Place on Earth has helped her gain a better understanding of the hospitality industry. The skills she learned caddying at Meadowbrook CC and as an Evans Scholar at MSU have made her better equipped to handle the sometimes madding crowds that flood the theme park and the Liberty Tree Tavern. Working as a caddie really helped me open up to new people, Kirsten said. When I was 15 and just starting out at Meadowbrook, I did not know the members. They were all strangers to me. Over time, you get more comfortable with yourself and talking to strangers. Now, I can go up to any person at Disney and find something to talk to them about. I can honestly say I would not be where I am today without the Evans Scholars Program." - Kirsten Gutowski Kirsten s experience as a caddie and Evans Scholar, paired with internships at Disney and Baltimore Country Club, have helped her consider a unique career path -- she wants to work at country clubs with the hope of one day becoming a club general manager. It s like bringing the Evans Scholarship full circle, she said. Honestly, I never thought I would have wanted a career in country clubs when I was a caddie at 15, but I just can t seem to get away. I love the relationships you build and being better able to connect with the people you serve. It makes that magical moment that much better.
Chick s Dream What began as a dream for Charles Chick Evans in 1929 to send deserving caddies, like Kirsten, to college, has grown into the nation s largest college scholarship program for golf caddies. Currently, 870 students are enrolled at 18 universities across the nation, including 14 where the Foundation owns and operates a Scholarship House. In recent years, successful fundraising efforts have allowed leaders to grow the Program, with a goal of sending 1,000 caddies to college annually by the year 2020. Each Scholar goes through a comprehensive selection process and is evaluated on four main criteria academics, financial need, caddie record, and character and leadership. Evans Scholars are campus leaders in academics and extracurricular activities. The program boasts a cumulative GPA of 3.2 with a graduation rate over 95%. The Alumni, 10,000 strong, pay it forward each year in annual contributions. Last year alone over $8 million was donated back to the program. The state of Michigan ranks number two in scholarships awarded and funds raised. The Scholarship Houses at Michigan State University and the University of Michigan continue the excellent traditions of the program while preparing the young men and women for what lies ahead. So, we invite you to help keep Chick s dream alive by participating in Michigan s premier golf event The Evans Scholars Golf Classic. We can t wait for the Golf Classic see you there! - Robert L.
