Phillips-Rooks Extension District #5 Volume 2018-19, Issue 1 October 2018 Pick Up State Fair Entries Please make sure you come and get your State Fair Entries!! Handouts and project show Welcoming New 4-H Members As new members come to your club, take time to say hi and make them feel welcome in your group. Here are some things your club might consider doing to help welcome new families to Phillips or Rooks County 4-H. Appoint a New Family Coordinator to introduce visitors at the monthly meeting, orient families to 4- H, and be available for questions throughout the year. Buddy System - Consider pairing new members or families with current members or families. It s a great way for everyone to get better acquainted and to help new families feel comfortable in the club. Let s do everything we can to make Phillips and Rooks County 4-H a welcoming and great learning place for all families! 4-H Age Youth must be 7 years old before January 1, 2019 to join 4-H. Those turning 7 on or after January 1 will join 4-H the following year. 4-H Online Enrollment The 2018-19 4-H online enrollments will open October 1, 2018. ALL new and returning 4-H members must complete the enrollment and health form on-line at https://ks.4honline.com. Make sure all contact information is accurate. The information entered during this enrollment process will be the information used to get important 4-H information to all members including a monthly 4-H newsletter. Please have the online re-enrollment process complete by November 1, 2018. Contact your local extension office with any questions. Shutterbugs in Hays The 4-H Action Team is planning a Shutterbug event to be held in Hays on October 13, 2018 at the K-State Research Center Farm from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Shutterbug events provide opportunities for 4-H youth to participate in hands-on photography activities. 4-H Robotics SpaceTech Experience The Kansas 4-H SpaceTech Program and the Kansas Cosmosphere located in Hutchinson are again teaming up to provide fun, hands-on and science-based programming for Kansas 4-H Youth Development. This fourth program will feature Robotics. The experience will begin Friday, November 16, at 4:00 p.m., and will end on Saturday, November 17, at 4:00 p.m. Registration will close November 4, 2018. Kansas 4-H Leadership Weekend (KYLF & KVF) The Kansas Youth Leadership Forum (KYLF) and the Kansas 4-H Volunteer Forum (KVF) registration is open. The Forums will be held November 17-18, 2018 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. KYLF is for youth ages 14-18 before January 1, 2019 and KVF is for all Kansas 4-H Volunteers. KYLF will feature leadership workshops, Youth Council Elections, and opportunities to learn and have fun. The Kansas 4-H Volunteer Forum will feature training from the Kansas Leadership Center. Online Registration is available now. This year participants in both forums will register through the same system. Registration deadline is October 15, 2018 for both events. National 4-H Week National 4-H Week is October 7 13, 2018. Please make plans to promote the 4-H program and recruit new members. Check out the 4-H website at www.kansas4-h.org and encourage others to check it out too! 48 Hours of 4-H October 13-14, 2018 Join us this fall in seeing just how much we can give back to our communities! The weekend after National 4-H Week, is the perfect opportunity to set up a service project. Invite your friends, clubs, adult volunteers and 4-H Alums too! Find all the information at www.kansas4-h.org and start planning your projects. 4-H Council Meetings The next Phillips County 4-H Council meeting will be held on November 26, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Phillips County Annex. The next Rooks County 4-H Council meeting will be held on November 12, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. at the Harding Hall 4-H Building. 4-H Program Fee Kansas 4-H has a yearly fee of $15 per member. For the 2018-2019 4-H year, the Phillips County 4- H Council has agreed to pay for the 4-H program fee for Phillips County 4-H members if enrolled before November 1, 2018. Any enrollments completed after this deadline will be responsible for sending in the program fee. Rooks County 4-H please follow the steps when enrolling or re-enrolling. Payment is due on-line or by check if you select to do so. 4-H Record Books Phillips County record book, pin applications and KAP s, Club Seal applications and Phillips County 4-H Scholarship applications are due to the Phillipsburg Extension Office by Monday, October 1, 2018. Rooks County record book, pin applications and KAP s are due to the Stockton Extension Office by October 15, 2018. 4-H Club and County Projects The 4-H Club and County Projects Financial Review will be held in Rooks County on Monday, October 8, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. at the Harding Hall 4- H Building, and in Phillips County on Monday, October 29, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. at the Phillips County Fair Building. Please bring the 4-H club s treasurer book and financial statements. The club s treasurer as well as an adult representative needs to be present and will assist in looking at other club and county projects financial records. Pin & KAP Judging On October 7 th at 5:30 p.m. Phillips County 4-H will be judging pin applications and another counties KAP books at the First Christian Church in Phillipsburg. Each club needs to send 2 adults or teen leaders to help with this judging. This is a good opportunity to see how the KAP books are prepared.
Officers Training Phillips County Officers Training will be held on October 29, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fair Building. If you are a club officer, please plan on attending. We will cover the duties and responsibilities of each office at this training. Club/County Project Inventory Just as a reminder the Club and/or County Project Inventory sheets are due to the Phillipsburg Extension Office by January 1, 2019. 4-H Sunday 4-H Sunday will be held at the First Christian Church, Phillipsburg, Kansas on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. National 4-H Week National 4-H week is October 7-13, 2018. In addition to 4-H Sunday and Radio Spots, plan to wear your 4-H club shirt to school on Monday, October 8, 2018 and wear any other 4-H shirt you may have during the rest of the week. Phillips County Achievement Banquet The Phillips County Achievement Banquet is scheduled for Sunday, November 11, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. at the Phillips County 4-H Building. Rooks County 4-H Council Happenings The Rooks County 4-H Council met on September 10, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. at the Harding Hall 4-H Building. Achievement Celebration will be held November 4, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. in Stockton. Mt. Pleasant 4-H is planning the event. The 4-H Club will be held October 8, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. at the Harding Hall 4-H Building. One adult and treasurer from each club should participate and bring the clubs treasurer book and financial statements. Each club has been asked to complete a Food Stand Evaluation at their next club meeting. The evaluation form was emailed to club leaders and distributed at the 4-H Council meeting. 4-H Council approved to have the Fair Judging Contests moved to Wednesday of the Fair from 2:00-4:00 p.m. There was discussion regarding awarding all judging contest medals and sweepstakes awards on Friday of the Fair following the livestock judging contest. It was decided to take the information back to the clubs for further discussion. The Livestock Committee reported on the September 10, 2018 meeting. First State Bank of Plainville was nominated as the Friend of 4-H Award to be acknowledged at the Achievement Celebration. 48 Hours of 4-H was discussed and the clubs are asked to report activities so work accomplished gets recognized. The next meeting was scheduled for November 12, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. at the Harding Hall 4-H Building. It will be election of officers. Junior Leaders The next Junior Leaders meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, October 8, 2018 at the Harding Hall 4-H Building. To be a Junior Leader you must be 12 years of age as of January 1, 2019 and signed up for the Leadership project on your 4- H online enrollment form.
Rooks County Livestock Committee Happenings The Rooks County Livestock Committee met on September 10, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. at the Harding Hall 4-H Building. Items discussed and tabled to gain input from the 4-H Clubs include: 1) large animal round robin; splitting the senior and intermediate swine showmanship for ease of judging and time, 2) market steer show; divided by breeds, did it work ok or what changes need to be made, 3) ultrasounding of beef cattle; did youth like it and want to continue, 4) rate of gain contest; Jake Conger has offered to sponsor for the swine, a livestock weighin and tagging date would have to be selected for the spring, 5) possibility of having a maximum weight for the swine to be eligible for the livestock sale, 6) moving the show time up for cat/hand pet and dog show, proposal of 1:30 p.m. for cat/hand pet show and 2:30 p.m. for dog show, 7) move the show time up for sheep and goat show, proposal of 4:00 p.m., and 8) adding a market heifer class.
