Block 3 2015 January 2015 to April 2015 Volume 2 Issue 3 Match reports are written by the students and the team coaches. Message from the Director of Sport Block 3 of the Sports Season was again full of action across a wide range of age-groups and sports. The U13 FOBISIA team was winning medals down in Taiwan. There was success in dramatic style at ACAMIS Football for the boys team and heart-breaking defeat for the girls. The boys team also picked up the ISAC league title to complete the double. The Key Stage 3 girls and boys teams competed in the ISAC Basketball leagues and the Dulwich Swim Team flew down to Hong Kong to compete in the Mantas swim meet. The Junior School pupils were also in action too competing in the U11 Handball and Badminton events. There was so much going on that I almost forgot to mention the Dulwich Olympiad. Yes, Block 3 really was a juggernaut of sporting occasions. Mr.Townsend THE DULWICH OLYMPIAD IN BEIJING Dulwich College Beijing became the first school to host the Dulwich Olympiad and it proved to be a wonderful two day event bringing the very best out of so many teams and individuals in the various sporting arenas. We were delighted to welcome the touring team from Dulwich College London as our special guests along with Dulwich Seoul, Singapore, Shanghai, Suzhou, Suzhou High School and Zhuhai. Pupils from Under 13, 15 and 17 age groups competed in Swimming, Table Tennis, Basketball, Football and Athletics.
DULWICH OLYMPIAD IN BEIJING Day One: The Athletics in the National Olympic Stadium was a wonderful opening event. London s boys and Shanghai s girls were undoubtedly the strongest competitors in these events but Beijing did grab some great golds with U17 Rebecca Svantemann in fine form winning both the 400 and 800 events, U15 Matthew Hobson winning the 1500 and 800 events and U13 Erica Dudek winning both her track events in real style. The National Olympic Swimming Pool set the scene for the afternoon as the Lions Swim Team bagged gold after gold and finished overall winners. Congratulations to Bryan Chiew, Cecilia Tellarini, Daniel Looi and Grace Xie who were all in incredible form. The Table Tennis was hosted at the school and congratulations must go to Tim Li for finishing second and Wayne Foo in third place. Day Two: The sun was shining and the air crystal clear. The Beijing team knew this was going to be a great day of sport but no one thought it would be quite so special. In the Basketball event Beijing won 5 out of the 6 possible finals in the three age groups. The teams were all in great form and praise must go to Coach Sherlon, Judson Tomlin and Steve Anderson for the outstanding coaching provided to these teams. In the Football Beijing won the U17 Girls final and the U15 Boys final, finishing second in three other age-groups and third in the other. The closing Gala Dinner saw Bryan Chiew and Cecilia Tellarini pick up Best Male and Female Swimming Award, Nathan Turner was awarded the Games player award for his gold in Basketball and Football and Rebecca Svantemann collected the most prestigious award of Sportsperson of the Olympiad after
UNDER 13 FOBISIA GAMES IN TAIWAN Dressed in our trademark red tracksuits, the Dulwich College Lions U13 FOBISIA team headed to Taiwan to compete in the FOBISIA games. Arriving in Taiwan we settled in with a strong mindset: To win, but also to have fun. The games started well thanks to Daniel Looi who picked up 4 gold medals in the swimming events. Dulwich swam strongly to the finish line picking up 3rd place overall. The conditions were tough as we headed to the Athletics venue. But mud and rain didn t stop the girls dominating the track events and the boys picking up some gold medals in the fielding events, great performances and teamwork paid off as we finished 2nd overall in Athletics. The boys put in a strong performance in the Football competition with eye catching performances on the way. We played great football ranging from Robin Park s acrobatic saves to Leo Lin s powerful shots however, we were unable to pick up a medal as we just missed out on 3rd place with a narrow 1-0 loss to BISS. Basketball was the last sport played in the FOBISIA for the U13 boys and we didn't disappoint, with some great passing, shooting and defensive play. After giving our all and putting in a great team effort, we finished second only to Taipei European School. With smiles on our faces the Dulwich Lions flew back to Beijing with feelings of victory and fulfillment. Tyler Schiff
UNDER 13 FOBISIA GAMES IN TAIWAN Girls Football: The competition today was tough. The girls underestimated the aggression and sheer size of their opponents, knocking them psychologically. In our games overall we showed good attacking play but simply lacked the end product and were caught short on the counter attack too often. Going into our final game, we were going out to play for pride against the undefeated champions of the whole group. Our game plan changed and we adapted tremendously well. The girls grew in confidence the more the game went on and they managed to hold off the champions, scoring a penalty kick. With support from the whole of the tournament competitors behind us, the girls went on to dominate the game and earned a well deserved win to see them into 5th place. Reflecting on the tournament as a whole, the girls grew stronger and stronger the more they played and they began to learn from their mistakes. To win the final game reinforced just how talented these girls can be and the potential they show for the future. The girls are still very young and it is opportunities like today that will help them gain more exposure to such challenges and help them grow as individuals as well as a team. Miss Sadler Boys Basketball: Tenacity. Grit. Achieving what no one expects possible. The U13 FOBISIA Boy s team won their first three games and then took a tough loss to the host school, Taipei, and were looking at a bronze medal. Initial research by the tournament organizers said that if the boys could beat undefeated and number one Ho Chi Minh City by 15 or more; the gold could still be possible. Chances were slim in this low scoring tournament and even more dire with starter, Leo, out with a sprained ankle. Armed with a new strategy that required speed, and the aforementioned tenacity and grit, the boys took immediate control of the game and demolished any doubt they were the better team winning by 19. This made for a threeway tie for first forcing organizers to go back to the rule book and unfortunately a different rule applied and the boys slipped to second and the silver medal. An all-around team effort led by Tyler, Kai, Owen, Callum, Fred, Charlie, Robin and the living definition of tenacious, Junku. Coaches Andersen, Parekh and Durbin agreed it was the most exciting and well-played game in their combined 15- year's history in coaching at DCB! Outstanding performance! Mr Andersen
VARSITY BOYS LIFT ACAMIS FOOTBALL TROPHY AFTER DRAMATIC PENALTY SHOOT OUT What a tournament it was! Going into the first game against SCIS, we were confident. As a young side, we had spent the entire season building chemistry, which showed in our fluid teamwork throughout the game. We brushed SCIS aside 3-1, controlling the possession and the pace for the entirety of the match. As the tournament progressed, however, our fitness and limited number of subs (which is becoming somewhat of a tradition) took its toll, and the precision and flair in our game seemed to dwindle somewhat. However, we had the one quality that every title winning side has - the ability to grind out a win. The game against YCIS testified to this; their good pressing frustrated our normal style of play but with Brandon Wang's goal straight off the bench we managed to squeeze through to the semis. The highlight of this tournament, for me, has to be the semi-finals against the team we beat so convincingly in our first match SCIS. A misjudged bounce by one of our centre backs in the latter stages of the game allowed their striker through on goal, which he calmly finished. A lucky goal, perhaps, but a goal nonetheless and with minutes left to go, we were in deep trouble. The game dragged on, with us throwing every man forward, desperate for a goal, and them having every man behind the ball, hanging on... and in the final minutes of the game - a loose ball, a speculative poke towards goal - and a dramatic celebration. Binyam Aschalew had kept us on the road to the finals. On to the penalties. We had practised penalties for our last training session before coming to ACAMIS - and it paid off. With all our takers putting in calmly in the corners, and Tyler Nelson magically getting down and saving 2, we were through to the finals. The final was a mixture of extremely tired legs and very, very direct football as YCIS were once again stopping us from playing our normal passing football. While both sides got chances, none were converted - and on to penalties once again. While it may look easy, being a keeper in a penalty shootout situation is extremely difficult. Yet the pressure did not seem to bother our keeper Tyler Nelson, and perhaps even seemed to enliven him. Yet again, Tyler, with a lightning fast reaction time, saved the last penalty from YCIS that I for one thought for sure was going in - and with that save, he made us ACAMIS Champions once again. VARSITY GIRLS END RUNNERS UP AT ACAMIS FOOTBALL AFTER LOSING PENALTY SHOOT OUT Captain s Report: After 23 goals and six unbeaten performances in the group stage and semifinals of the ACAMIS tournament, the Dulwich Girls were the favourites to win the tournament. However, despite a commanding performance in the finals, the final score was 3-3, and the game went into extra time, only to be decided by penalties. Unfortunately, the game was lost 2-1 on penalties and SCIS were crowned the victors of ACAMIS. Despite a tough loss, I couldn t be prouder to have captained such a talented group of girls, and I couldn t have chosen better people to spend my final ACAMIS with. Isobel Brown
VARSITY BOYS WIN ISAC FOOTBALL FINALS The ISAC league season proved to be very tough with a humbling 5-0 defeat at the hands of WAB in our first match. The boys took a lot from this game in terms of what was needed to be done to improve. In the next game the DCB team completely dominated possession against ISB but could not find the net and eventually went down 1-0. The final league game before the ISAC finals was against the German School. This was a hugely entertaining game that ended 2-2 with both goals coming from Nathan Turner. Mr Townsend This season proved to be very successful for our Boys Varsity Football squad at the ISAC Tournament. With a total of 18 goals scored and only one conceded, the team finished first place undefeated, beating the DSP Panthers in the final 3:0. For many of our senior players it was an emotional day. It was the perfect way for Bjorn Shen, Chris Chua, Diego Morro, and Brian Hwang to wrap up their school footballing careers for the Lions by winning the ISAC trophy, along with Jan Vlcēk who still went to ACAMIS a week later. JUNIOR VARSITY BOYS FOOTBALL A very successful season it has been for DCB s JV Football squad, with a number of emphatic wins over rivals such as ISB and WAB just showing how far our squad has gone this season. The stepping-stone into our great success ultimately came down to our exquisite team chemistry and the positive vibes throughout the squad after just a few training sessions, our whole squad gradually became familiar with one another s playing styles which benefited us greatly when it came to the tough games. We started the season off with the Tigers Cup held at WAB; it was the first test of the season. In our first game together we comfortably beat ISB 1-0. Although it looked relatively shaky at the back, we managed to score late on. In our second game we played BSB s varsity team. Although we lost 4-2 we showed some promising potential in our execution, especially against a very solid varsity squad. The following week we played ISB again at home. It was the game, I believe, that truly brought our team together and where we showed massive improvement individually and as a team. It clearly showed in the scoreline, beating them 3-0. We then went up against WAB JV. Going into the game I could sense the nervousness amongst our players, but we were confident in the form that we were in. Again, we went on to dominate the game, winning 3-0. We asserted our dominance in such a fashion that they hadn t managed to have a single shot on target in the second-half. In our first away game we played BISS, travelling all the way to the Olympic Park for the fixture. Going into the game I believe we were too confident, we had every right to considering the form we were in. Our stubbornness got in the way of our fluid playing style resulting in a 1-1 draw however, it was a good lesson for the future. Our final league game was against BCIS, which was against their formidable varsity squad and proved a real test to conclude the season. We were doing very well in the first half, playing some of our best football all season, winning 1-0 in the first 45 minutes. However a lack of experience and communication in our defensive line resulted in a 3-2 loss. It wasn t the result we expected to finish the season, but nonetheless we were happy with our performance overall during the season and many of our players could definitely manage to play varsity football next season. JUNIOR VARSITY GIRLS FOOTBALL The JV Girls season started with the Tiger Cup 7s tournament at WAB on a chilly Friday evening. We were a bit rusty in the first game, but managed a 0-0 draw against ISB JV. In the second match we beat BSB Varsity 3-1. Moon Ng pulled off some brilliant saves. Alice Hawkins, twice, and Ingrid Bodeen were the goal scorers. Unfortunately, bad air on the Saturday prevented us from playing and defending our title from 2014. We drew 0-0 with WAB JV in a friendly 7s fixture and beat ISB JV 1-0 in a friendly 11s fixture with Arielle Wong sneaking out of defence late in the second half to score and break the stalemate. 11s matches against the Varsity teams of Harrow and DSP were both cancelled. We were unable to defend our ISAC title from 2014 as this tournament was also cancelled due to bad air. In the last week of the season we played an 11s match against the BSB Varsity team and although we had plenty of chances, we drew 0-0 again. With the help of three Varsity players, we were lucky enough to play in the 11s ISAC tournament against the Varsity teams of DSP, TIS and THIS. We squandered plenty of chances and drew 0-0 against THIS in the first game. In the second game against TIS, it was 0-0 at half time and the coach decided to shake things up in an attempt to get a goal in this must-win match. The plan worked as we did score a goal but unfortunately the other team scored twice. Hence we lost 2-1 with Jessica Liu the scorer for DCB. In the last match of the day against a very strong DSP team, the coach wisely returned to a safer formation and the girls played their best football of the season. Defending strongly and matching the Germans attack for attack, the score was 0-0 at half-time. With only 11 players, and hence no substitutes, the DCB girls were tiring and unluckily conceded two goals soon after half time. They showed excellent resilience and bounced back to score two goals themselves to secure the draw, both scored by the Year 9 striker Jessica Liu. Special mention must also go to the three Varsity players, Monica Wu, Liz Cheng and Alice Hawkins who toiled away in midfield all day and created plenty of opportunities. Moon Ng was superb in goal and the two goals conceded against DSP were the first we conceded over the entire season with Moon in goal. Captain, Michelle Zhou was rock solid and led the defensive line with strength and guile. Everybody learnt a lot this season and with three Year 9 students and many Year 10 students in a squad of 18, the future certainly looks bright for girls football at DCB. Mr Hawkins
UNDER 12 GIRLS BASKETBALL On Saturday 25 April 2015, the Under 12 girls went to Harrow to compete in ISAC Basketball. At the start of the tournament everyone was full of high spirits and ready to play. Our first match was against Harrow. The team was on form with amazing defense for Birte Muller. Some great jump shots and lay-ups by Caterina Bossi, Mariella Trias, Kareena Green and Whalen Gradoville. The support of the whole team helped us to win with a final score of 12-4 to DCB. Our second match was against BIBA and after that first win we were all determined to keep the spirits up high and to give it our best shot, and with that we had won our second game. Now it was time to play BSB. We were scared, but we weren t going to let that keep us from winning. We tried our hardest but the shots kept coming back off the backboard and not into the hoop. In the end BSB had won with a score by 8 to 6. After all that competition it was lunchtime. After we had reloaded our energy we would be were competing for 3 rd place against ISB. It was back and fourth. We shot one hoop but then ISB went straight back at us. At the end ISB had beaten us and we had finished in 4 th place. In the end we were all very proud of ourselves on what we have accomplished with the amazing help from our coaches. Mariella Trias
UNDER 12 BOYS BASKETBALL Twelve bright Dulwich Basketball players marched on to the court on Saturday. The past few months were full of intense practices during lunch and afterschool, competitive matches against other teams and, of course, lots of fun. Today was the day when their time and effort finally paid off. We met ISB for our first match, which we knew was not an easy opponent from the past two defeats against them. However, Coach Gayle, Steven and I were confident that our boys could overcome ISB since they had improved significantly, not just individually, as a team. Unfortunately, our boys were faced with another challenge, the half court press. With ISB s intimidating defense and a star player, who had the size and athleticism that were exceptional for a Year 7 boy, we ended up with a defeat. However, we stayed positive and knew that we could compete against ISB again in the finals for a potential revenge. By the collective effort from each player, we took victory in the following two games against BIBA and BCIS, putting us in the semifinals against THIS. Perhaps the match against THIS was the most impressive game of the season. Each individual went up on the court and showed what being a great basketball player is all about: energetic defense, confident shooting and teamwork. We headed to the finals, competing with the so-far-undefeated ISB for the glory of first place. Either on the court or on the bench, every member of the team was energetic. To combat ISB, we ran a new offense to break the half-court press. On defense, instead of a normal zone defense, we had a 2,2 zone with our most athletic ballers, Callum and Owen, locking down their star player man-to-man. These changes brought us success with their star player remaining scoreless throughout the game. Unluckily, our shots were not falling and the heated battle ended as a 10-5 defeat. Despite the loss, the coaches were proud of the team s improvement throughout the season that resulted in a second place trophy in a very tough competition, as well as the Sportsmanship Trophy. I have never seen such enthusiastic, passionate and talented young squad of Basketballers in my life. I am confident that these boys will become great Dulwich Basketball players in years to come. UNDER 13 GIRLS BASKETBALL SEASON ROUND UP In our first match against WAB we won 24:2 and MVP s were Coco Yu, Sally Lee and Peyton Park. In the second match against IST we won 34:2 and the MVP was shared amongst everyone as we all did really well in that game. We won the third match against Harrow 24:6. MVP going to Alyssa Lam and Jingying Sun. We were into the semi-finals and up against BSB. We played well and we won by 15 points, with the final score 27:8. MVP of that match was Celynn Kow, Maggie Cho and Esther Ji. The final was against ISB which, sadly, we lost by a few points. Even though at times the referees were a bit inconsistent we fought as hard as we could and everyone gave it their very best. It was a very good season for the U13 girls finishing 2 nd at FOBISIA, 1 st at the Dulwich Olympiad and 2 nd at ISAC. I hope we can all carry on playing Basketball together. Good luck for next year! UNDER 13 BOYS BASKETBALL SEASON ROUND UP On Thursday the U13 DCB Boys played at BSB. We came out with the win, but a lot closer than we would have liked. The final score was 31-30 to DCB. Steven Ding played outstanding basketball, scoring at least 15 points and draining three three-pointers. Also, Kevin Li scored 8 points, and getting multiple blocks. William Fosh got 2 points and multiple rebounds, which helped us achieve the win. Matthew Zheng The ISAC finals was a great day but a tough one for the U13 boys team. We did well considering the absence of our key player Tyler Schiff. The stand out players was Kaj Scholar, who dominated the boards with countless rebounds. Edward Lin scored 3 swishes in a row. David Feng scored a 3 point buzzer beater. Steven Ding ran plays really well and Kevin Li was blocking everything in front of him. We narrowly lost to Harrow 14-11 in the group stage and then beat BCIS and WAB, but in the last game we slipped up against BSB and found ourselves out of the top four and out of the semi finals. The boys were frustrated, but we went on to take 5 th place and we have all learned some vital lessons ready for next year. David Feng
UNDER 14 BOYS BASKETBALL DCB BEAT ISB IN THE ISAC FINAL Overall, I think the ISAC tournament was a success. We showed the other schools not only how well we can play, but also how we can respect other players and the referees on the court. Although our pool was quite easy, we showed Coach Henry and Coach Tomlin how well we can contribute on the court, make reactions to the plays that our opponents make and, when a mistake is made, how we can quickly overcome the mistake and make sure it doesn t happen again. Our toughest game was definitely the final against ISB. Nick Li got us our first lead, which we maintained through the first quarter. In the second quarter, ISB caught up and took the lead. This only made us focus on the game even more, making good passes, good shots and intercepting passes. We kept the intensity throughout the rest of the game. We didn t relax, not even for a split second in the second half and came away with a great win. Everyone played well throughout the tournament. It has been a really nice season with all my teammates. UNDER 14 GIRLS BASKETBALL SEASON ROUND UP On Saturday April 25 th the U14 Girls Basketball team travelled to Tianjin to IST to participate in the U14 Girls Basketball ISAC tournament. We played 3 games before making it into the semi finals. Our games were hard but we played well and pushed through. We won our first two games against BSB and YCIS. Unfortunately, we lost to ISB after a hard and tiring match. ISB, were as always, well organised and tough to play against. Unfortunately, after a long and tiring game again BWYA in the semifinals, we lost 15-13. We had almost as much fun on the way to Tianjin, which is a really fun journey, as we did participating in the matches. Thanks to Coach Pankratz for being our coach this season. Arielle Wong
UNDER 11 ISAC HANDBALL EVENT AT DSP On Saturday 14th March, the Year 6 Boys Handball Squad travelled to The German School to partake in the annual ISAC Handball tournament. The competition was tough and fast-paced but both teams performed fantastically. The A team powered through the group stages, with all players scoring numerous goals and only conceding one themselves. Meanwhile, the B team found life a little tougher, managing to secure the last remaining place in the quarter-finals based on their goal difference as the best 3rd placed team. In the quarter-finals, the A team defeated YCIS 7-0 and the B team brilliantly defeated Harrow 6-1 (a team that they had lost to in the group stages) to set up an all Dulwich semi-final. For all involved, this was the game of the tournament. However, buoyed with confidence, the B team really showed their worth and only just lost a very close game, which they actually led for a short while, 6-4. This made them the only team to score more than 1 goal against DCB A team a statistic that really shows their improvement as a team. In the final, the A team faced BSB and whilst the B team faced the German School's (is this their name?) A team in the 3rd place play-off. The B team yet again demonstrated remarkable teamwork and determination to win the game 6-1, whilst the A team demonstrated that they had the mental strength to win the trophy that they deserved by winning 5-1. An all round fantastic performance from all involved and a proud day for coaches Archer and Alford. During training, the A team had regularly defeated the B team in practice matches.
JUNIOR SCHOOL ISAC BADMINTON EVENT AT BCIS This year s Junior School Badminton event was a wonderful event contested at BCIS. The standard was, as always, very high and the boys were fully tested throughout the group stages. The furthest the DCB team reached was the quarter final which was a great achievement given the great standard of competition on display. Well done to all the boys for enjoying their first taste of competitive school Badminton. The team was Justin Hong, Daniel Son, Nicholas Schou, Brian Lee, Zion Kang, Jake Jeong, Andrew Yang, Leo Jeong, Matthijs Coolen, Simon Ensor. Boli Liu
LIONS SWIMMERS AT THE ASIAN ALL STARS An All-Star Affair. On April 7 th and 8 th, the Dulwich Swim Team travelled to the Dragons Den at ISB. An event that drew the best swimmers from all the international schools from Asia. This was undoubtedly the biggest swimming event on the Dulwich Swim Team calendar; months of hard work and dedication all to show for in two short days of competition. The underdogs - Dulwich - were up against their local rivals ISB once again. ISB were brimming with confidence having marched to the APAC title recently, however, the Dulwich Lions puffed their chest and took the competition to ISB. The results definitely did not let the school down. For the first time in Dulwich history, we left them in our bubbles, smashing them in the boys 15 and over Freestyle Relay and Medley Relay by a 5 second and 3 second lead respectively, and breaking the ISB record in the process. The 15 and over boys also snatched 10 gold medals out of the 15 events, special mentions go to Cecilia Tellarini (2 Gold Medals), Daniel Looi (3 Gold Medals), Eric Hou (3 Gold Medals), Peter Meyer (4 Gold Medals) and Bryan Chiew (8 Gold Medals). Congratulations to all the Dulwich students that participated. All your hard work and dedication definitely paid off! A big thank to all parents, for giving us the support. MANTAS SWIM MEET IN HONG KONG Hong Kong Mantas Swim Meet: We set off our journey to Hong Kong on the 17th of April. We entered the Tung Chung arena early the next morning and could instantly see the many schools piled up in their own sections. A wash of colours, each one representing their schools, filled the standing zone like a rainbow. As the races began, swimmers, coaches and parents rushed frantically from one place to another but most importantly, to ensure that each individual swimmer would be standing next to their diving block before their race. All swimmers lined up next to the block and with the bang of the gun they dived into the rather salty pool. From afar, one can make out the swimmers keeping their tight body streamlined before it emerges to the surface for air. There were splashes made with the ultimate target of hands slamming onto the finishing touch pad. All eyes turned to the score board as our results flashed before our eyes. In the end, there was only one winner for each race but all that mattered the most was the improvement in their personal best times. Over the two days, we were able to experience a competitive race in a 50 meters pool and also got to make great friends from other schools. Hong Kong was a great experience for everyone. Celeste Kow
