Presentation Made By: Madeline, Alexis, Cameron, Justin, Emily, and Conner.
Historical Figures by Justin Pocahontas (born in Matoaka, and later known as Rebecca Rolfe, 1595 March 1617) Helped with the Jamestown settlement. She was the daughter of Chief Powhatan, the head of a network of tributary tribal nations in the Tidewater region of Virginia. In a well-known historical anecdote, she is said to have saved the life of an Indian captive, Englishman John Smith, in 1607 by placing her head upon his own when her father raised his war club to execute him. Chief Powhatan (died 1618), whose proper name was Wahunsenacawh was the paramount chief of Tsenacommacah, an alliance of Algonquian-speaking Virginia Indians in the Tidewater region of Virginia at the time English settlers landed at Jamestown in 1607
Clothing By: Emily Clothing that the Native americans had was much different than the clothing we have now. Instead of using cloth they Used deer skins to make clothing. Beads and shells were often added to tribal dresses. There were many different bead work patterns that were symbols. Women would prepare the deer skins that would be used as clothing. Making clothing was not a task the women would take lightly. Many of the Decorations the women used when they made clothing were symbols of strength and power. Women would also make clothing for loved ones they would use things that resemble that loved one on the clothes. Animals that were used for clothing were Honored by the Natives.
Native American Toys At the time of the Native Americans, children worked more than us today, and they didn't have as much time to enjoy themselves. Even though the children didn't have as much time to play, they still enjoyed playing games. In their free time, usually the boys would go into the forest and hunt small animals with slingshots. The girls would sometimes nurse baby piglets and pretend to be mothers.
Toy Catapult The children also made small working models of the catapults their fathers used to defend their territory when they were being invaded. The children would have one child be the enemy, and the rest of the children would use the catapults to shoot the enemy with anything they could find. Mostly it was acorns, rocks, and when the children were feeling rambunctious, deer or rabbit poop.

Native American Toys The boys also made small working models of a bow and arrow to shoot small prey such as chipmunks, small squirrels, and small rabbits. The young boys believed that if they were able to shoot small prey at a young age, they were destined to be good hunters. Unlike the arrows in the picture, the points of the arrows were sharpened to a point by the fathers.

Native American Toys The children also played a large variety of marble games. Their marbles were not like the kind that we have today, but they look like our soccer balls.
Native American Food The Natives had a variety of food, I will tell you only a few today or else we would be here forever. I hope this helps you better understand the Natives culture. So a few foods in the meat department are: Deer, buffalo, birds, rabbits, and other small animals. They also ate seafood. They cooked their meat either dried or smoked. They also ate it fresh or after being stored for months. The animals that they killed were killed with homemade weapons.
Native American Food Continued Some other things they ate were:berries, Plants, and Other fruits. At the end of our presentation Emily and Justin are going to help me pass out the samples. Please try and enjoy them. I understand if you don't like them because they are not our usual foods, but please don't be rude about it.
Education Native Americans learned by observing others and animals. They learned from the teaching of their parents or elders. Also they played games which prepared them for life. The following picture that I drew shows that there is no education done on books, paper, etc.
