By: Tevin Austin Work harder, smarter, tough, for longer was the team motto for the 2017 class 6-A state champions this year. It all began with the vision of a coach that instilled a certain work ethic that taught his players to work harder, and to want the gold ball bad enough. First came the summer conditioning though. We had a goal, and if that is what we had to do to reach it, then so be it. We all got stronger, tougher, and more intelligent during the offseason. I was blown away at coach Blankenship s love for the game and the high intensity of his practices, exclaimed Gary Jackson Holbrook. Coach Blakenship, former TU head football coach, as well as player, and former coach of the Union Redskins, led the Owasso Rams to a 21-14 victory over the undefeated Union Redskins at TU stadium on December 1st. Blankenship came in and asked his players if they wanted a championship. He said that he had done it before and told them what it took to do it. So, the Rams jumped on the boat with him. They worked so hard during the summer conditioning, that many didn t make it, other got sick a lot, but through it all, they would become champions. Then came the first game of the season. This is when the began to see all the hard work and pain that they went through pay off. An unexpected 48-10 bolow out on Jenks. This was completely unheard of for Owasso and it only got better from there. Next on the list of teams to beat was Bartlesville and we won again 56-14, the Broken Arrow, 49-27. Soon after was Mustang, with a 63-41 win. Finally, we were up against Union, the state champs, the team to beat. The battle was bloody and the fight was fierce, we went toe to toe with the champs. We scored and they scored, and we went into two overtimes, but when the smoke was cleared and that last ball was kicked, we had our first loss with a score of 44-41. Union had won, but not with sewing their own defeat into the championship game. Owasso learned from that game. The Rams left the game knowing the we were the best team on that football field. The fact that we played so close in the first game, we were still standing at the end showed the coaches we could go toe to toe with them, said Blankenship excitedly. After our first loss, we once again went on a rampage of victories, blowing out Putnam City North 55-10, South Moore 48-2, Norman North 60-28, Moore 52-6, and finally, before we went into the playoffs, we faced Edmond North, and again we blew them out 42-14. We made it to the playoffs with an almost flawless record. We had two more teams to beat before the championship, West More and Jenks. We ended up beating both teams by 20 points. In fact, Jenks didn t even score a touchdown. Once again, we faced the mighty Union Redskins. The night of the championship game was one to remember. Walking into the stadium fans on both sides of the stadium were chanting, Go Owasso, and Union Take State, accompanied by victory signs, and a roaring Pride of Owasso band. People said that the band was heard cheering even across the street. Within three minutes into the

V O L U M E 8 I S S U E 4 P A G E 3 game, Owasso scored, and the Owasso fans went wild. Quickly after that, Union has a drive right to the goal line where the Owasso defense has an amazing goal line save. It seemed as though the first goal gave us the confidence we needed to win and the drive we needed to fight for it. Throughout the entire game, Owasso was shutting down the Union s offense, and Owasso s offense was not able to be contained. The team played gallantly, and fought for every yard, every touchdown, every tackle, every sack, and every catch. Owasso was on fire and Union could not put it out. It s a good feeling, exclaimed Wayne Jones. The game came to a close and looking at the with a score of Owasso 21, Union 14. The Owasso crowd rushes onto the field to greet the players with smiles, hugs, and tears of joy. The gold ball was home where it needed to be. It was shining under those stadium lights, with Owasso fans and players passing it around and laying their hands on it. We have been waiting 44 years for this moment, and our players earned a state ring. It s crazy to end up with a ring, said Josh Proctor, in amazement at what they had accomplished as a team. Keyln Jones said, It doesn t feel real, but it feels good! I To succeed You need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you. V O L U M E 8 I S S U E 4 P A G E 4 OHS Book Fair Was a Huge Success By: Spencer Buck Ms. Gallagher, our high school librarian, hosted a school book fair from November 30th to December 8th. The book fair was a big success, and the school was able to raise a lot of money from it. In an interview, Ms. Gallagher revealed that the school had raised more than it had before. She says, We re going to sell more than we ve ever sold before, close to thirty-five hundred dollars, maybe close to fourthousand by the time we re done, which compared to an elementary school is not a lot, but for a high school, it s a really large amount. The money from the fair will in part go to new books for the school library, and part to books for younger kids who don t have any. I m sure the kids will be excited to know they can read some of their favorite books soon. Some of the more popular books, she says, were the Rick Riordan series kids liked to read and were continuing from middle school, Wonder, which was a book read by many in elementary school that was recently produced as a movie, and a historical fiction book called Salt to the Sea. Strangely enough, one of the first books to sell was a Minecraft bible book. Some people could say that fanbases of pop culture games like Minecraft and Five Nights at Freddy s were likely attracted to some of the lore/ merchandise books based on games featured at the book fair. OHS was proud to participate in the Book Fair this month. Thank you all for raising money for the school and for kids who could use a bit of fun reading this year.

V O L U M E 8 I S S U E 4 P A G E 5 The Spirit of Giving By: Emily McCraw The angel tree is always something to look forward to for many generous OHS students and staff. It s a way to give back, for the many blessings that we have. OHS had the opportunity to help 12 families and 36 children this year! The angel tree is an annual tradition here at Owasso High where teachers are assigned to an angel (a child) to help collect money, toys, clothes, or anything else requested by the family in need for Christmas. The main goal is to collect 2 outfits, shoes, socks, and underwear, along with 3-4 toys. Mrs. Tillinghast and Mrs. Smith are the head sponsors for this angel tree, and have done an amazing job spreading awareness and collecting presents. Several teachers volunteered to sponsor an angel this year, including, Mr. Montroy, Mrs. Quinton, Mrs. Elliot, Mrs. Mcbride, and more. Mr. Montroy s angel is an 8 year old boy who asked for roller skates, OU gear, and clothes. Which is exactly what he will wake up to on Christmas day because of our generous teachers and students--i mean Santa! Mr. Montroy is extremely excited to be able to participate. He exclaimed, I love the opportunity for me and my students to be able to contribute to the young men and women that can benefit from our Christmas spirit! Mrs. Smith is also excited and cannot wait for the kids to open their presents on Christmas morning, We don't get to see the families faces to protect their privacy, but I often think of them on Christmas morning and smile, hoping they enjoy their gifts as much as we enjoyed buying them. We all need help from time to time and we never know if and when that time may come. Hopefully everyone has been blessed by paying it forward. Also a big thank you to our NHS students who wrapped and prepared the gifts for the families!

Entertainment! By: Kelli Casteel OHS Book Fair Top Sellers Salt to the Sea By: Ruta Sepetys The Dark Prophecy Series By: Rick Riordan Justice League is the latest addition to the lineup of DC Comics cinematic universe, taking place after the events of Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. We have the return of Batman and Wonder Woman as they learn of a new threat coming to earth, an army from another world coming to take over the planet. Batman realizes that they are not enough to take on this new threat, so he goes off to recruit some unknown heroes in hiding, hoping to be able to stand a chance against this new upcoming threat as it threatens the planet, thereby forming the Justice League. This film seems to be learning a lesson from the previous movie, Batman vs. Superman, instead of taking a more heavy, dark dramatic approach, it instead takes a more bright and fun take on itself and seems to succeed on being a better film than Batman vs. Superman and DC s last superhero team-up movie, Suicide Squad (not saying a lot). The only big issue I have with the film is that it continues the same mistakes as it did with DCs previous superhero teamup movies, with introducing too many new characters and rushing through their character development, or just not placing enough emphasis towards them. Aside from that, I still feel that this movie does do itself well and has went beyond my expectations of how successful it was. I do somewhat recommend seeing this movie, but only because of staying caught up with the DC cinematic universe. Come and Get It By: Ree Drummand A Dog s Purpose By: W. Bruce Cameron Written in a first person perspective from the viewpoint of Apollo himself, The Dark Prophecy is about a character named Apollo, a shallow, self-absorbed god, who set Percy Jackson and friends tasks that often made their lives that much harder. In the book, Apollo reminisces about his encounters with various historical and mythological figures and bemoans injustice of his mortal punishment. However, he begins to show that he is maturing due to some of the obstacles that he goes through. This is a book series that will be enjoyed by both young and old, and it comes highly recommended.
