SURVEY REPORT Project: MICE Hall Re-survey Date: December 2014 Staff: T Millington, A Hooper Equipment used: Leica AT401 Laser Tracker, 1.5 SMR, Spatial Analyzer software Reference Drawing Nos MICE-HALL-USMN-2012-06.xit (Spatial Analyzer file listing previously surveyed coordinates for fixed survey nests in MICE Hall, June 2012) TASK: Confirm existing survey nest network Survey positions of datum point D2 and centre of magnets Q4 Q9 The existing network consisting of fixed survey nests has been resurveyed. The survey was able to resurvey 101 of the fixed points listed in the June 2012 survey data. The Brass scribed plate located beneath Magnet D2 has been surveyed (Point M1 ), this point represents the origin of the MICE Beamline. Using a jig designed to fit the bore of the Quad Magnets (Q4, Q5, Q6, Q7, Q8 and Q9), points have been surveyed representing the physical centres of the magnets. (This jig is currently held by the ISIS Survey Section) The survey also re-measured two wall mounted brass plates set at the ISIS Synchrotron Tooling Height of 603mm. Page 1 of 12

Results The network of points measured with the AT401 has been computed using Spatial Analyzer software. The software bundles all the observations together and then computes a best-fit solution for the network (USMN-Unified Spatial Metrology Network). Having resolved the network, the average computed point error (residual) is 0.03mm, with a maximum error of 0.50mm at point ERP099, and with an overall RMS for point errors of 0.06mm. Spatial Analyzer also computes uncertainty values for all measured points, based on analysis of the network. The average value for the uncertainty magnitude is 0.10mm; the maximum calculated uncertainty value is 0.26mm (at point ERP205 ). After computing the survey data, the observed network has been checked against the original (2012) survey network. Using all 101 of the re-surveyed existing points, a Least Squares best-fit transformation was carried-out. This produced an overall RMS error of 0.48mm in fitting to the previous coordinates. A listing of results for the USMN and Best-fit transformation is included at Appendix A. In order to simplify future survey works, and to ensure ongoing consistency, the entire resurveyed network has been transformed to a new coordinate system. Page 2 of 12

The coordinate system is right-handed and has an origin (0,0) at M1. The x axis is orientated on a line from M1 (origin) to the x,y position of the centre of the magnet furthest from M1 (Q9). The x axis is horizontal, ie perpendicular to the z axis (gravity). The y axis is perpendicular to x (+ve y to south of hall). The z (vertical) axis is aligned to gravity, as defined by the Laser tracker inclination sensor, with z=0 at 603mm below ISIS Tooling Height. Final, definitive, coordinates for all surveyed network points are given at Appendix B and have also been supplied as a.csv format file (MICE Hall Definitive Network 2015.csv). The final Spatial Analyzer file for this survey has also been supplied for archive purposes (MICE Hall Resurvey 2015 Overall.xit64).
