Stewart carves up Manatees, Miracle churn out seven runs Miracle starter Kohl Stewart hurled six one-hit frames with one walk and six punchouts to guide Fort Myers to a series-clinching 7-2 win over the Brevard County Manatees on Thursday night. Stewart earned his first win of the season and the Miracle provided early thump. Tanner English led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo homer. Chris Paul doubled in a run in first Miracle at-bat and Chad Christensen knocked in a run for the fourth consecutive game in a three-run first inning. All nine Miracle batters earned a hit in the game with two-hit evenings from English, Logan Wade and Austin Diemer. Alex Swim reached base five times and drove in a run. The Miracle finished the series with the Manatees with three consecutive wins after dropping the first game, 2-0. Vielma injury in Double-A causes trickle down effect On Wednesday, Chattanooga Lookouts shortstop Engelb Vielma suffered a hamstring injury that forced him to be put on the disabled list. As a result, the Miracle received the first roster transaction of the 2016 season with T.J. White getting the call-up to Double-A. White had recorded multiple hits in three of the last four games and was 6-for-22 with two RBI in six games for the Miracle. Filling White s spot on the Fort Myers roster will be infielder Chris Paul. A sixth round pick by the Twins last year out of the University of California-Berkeley, Paul got off to a great start with Cedar Rapids (A) in the Midwest League. Making six of seven starts at third base, Paul was 9-for-26 (.346) for the Kernels with two extra-base hits and four RBI. Manuel Guzman goes from Extended Spring Training to Cedar Rapids to fill in for Paul. Eight games in, vaunted pitching staff living up to the hype Entering the 2016 season, the Miracle rotation was recognized throughout Minor League baseball as a staff to watch. With five starters rated as top-30 prospects, the rotation is bursting with potential stars. Through seven games, the Miracle starters have posted an ERA of 1.75 with nine earned runs surrendered in 46.1 innings. The bullpen has been even better, giving up just three earned runs in 25.2 innings for a 1.05 ERA. Coming into today s game, the Miracle have the best team ERA at 1.62 and have yielded the fewest hits with 43 while registering just one wild pitch. Van Steensel returns to lead Miracle bullpen Todd Van Steensel was one of the most effective relievers in the FSL in 2015. Leading the Miracle staff with 46 appearances, tied for third-most in the FSL, Van Steensel was second in the league in strikeouts per nine at 11.05; behind only Matt Milroy of Jupiter. Todd converted 13-of-16 save opportunities and posted a 2.32 ERA. Van Steensel will be joined by returnees Trevor Hildenberger, Luke Westphal and Brian Gilbert in the pen. Newcomers include Yorman Landa, who is on the Twins 40-man roster, Raul Fernandez and Luke Bard. A Georgia Tech product and compensation round selection in 2012, Bard actually pitched one inning for the Miracle in 2013 and has wrestled injury since his draft. Bard was finally healthy in 2015 and went 7-1 with a 2.41 ERA in Cedar Rapids.
