December 2015 Brian Head Town News Volume 20 Like us on Facebook Trees to be Planted in Honor/Memory of Loved Ones Do you have a loved one (deceased or living) that you would like to honor in Brian Head? Brian Head Town is accepting tree donations to be planted around Bristlecone Pond. We will be planting Bristlecone Pine Trees, Quaking Aspen Trees, Blue Spruce Pine Trees, and Vanderwolf Pine Trees. We are willing to try other trees that can grow in our elevation too. If you choose to plant a tree in honor of a loved one, Brian Head Town will hang a plaque in its Council Chambers listing honorary names and donors, the type of tree planted, and the year the tree was planted. New Town Council David Sky Bourne and Larry Freeberg (incumbent) were elected to the two open Council positions in Brian Head at the General Election on November 3, 2015. They will each serve four year terms beginning January 1, 2016. Welcome back Larry and welcome aboard Sky! Two local residents, Gary Kozal and Dan Lynn, enjoying a ski day (December 3, 2015) 2015/2016 Ski Season is in Full Swing The 2015/2016 winter season has officially started in Brian Head (as of November 20, 2015)! The lines have been full and the lifts have been busy, filled with skiers and snowboarders of all ages. After a nice snow storm in November most days have been sunny and warm perfect snow and weather for some relaxing winter recreation! Come hang out with us on the hill! Brian Head Resort Operating Hours for the 2015/2016 Winter Season (Mountain Standard Time): 10:00 am to 4:00 pm - Monday through Friday 9:30 am to 4:30 pm - Saturday, Sunday, and Holiday Periods Night-time skiing and tubing (on Friday and Saturday nights) start at 4:00 pm. December 2015 Brian Head Town News Page 2 Brian Head Events December 2015, and January & February 2016 (Contact Brian Head Resort at (866) 930-1010 or Brian Head Town at (435) 677-2029 for more information) Every Friday and Saturday night from November 20 th to April 2 nd (excluding December 24 & 25) there will be night skiing and night tubing. Skiing will be from 4 9 pm and tubing will be from 4 8 pm. Every Saturday, starting December 12 th, Brian Head Resort will be hosting a Kansas City style BBQ and live Band/DJ in the Last Chair Saloon. December 19 th January 3rd is the Holiday period and the Resort will be open as normal, including Christmas (25 th ) and New Year s Day (1 st ). There will be lots of live bands and BBQ s during this time. Check the Resort s Facebook Page or Events Page for additional information. December 12, 2015 Ullr Fest Come out and help fellow townsmen offer a sacrifice to the snow God Ullr. We love snow! Starts at Dark Thirty TBA. Also join the Resort for a BBQ. Live Music will be provided by: DJ LEX. December 31, 2015 - The Resort will be hosting its annual New Year s Eve Celebration with a Dinner Party, Fireworks, and Torchlight Parade. Live music at Last Chair Saloon provided by FULL TILT BOOGIE. January 2, 2016 Winter Star Party. Bring your friends and enjoy Brian Head Resort s clean air and bright stars. Come to the BBQ at Last Chair Saloon. Live music will be provided by MOST WANTED. January 9, 2016 Munchkin Rail Jam. Brian Head Resort s midseason Rail competition created for youth. January 16, 2016 Annual Triple Crown snowboard event kicks off at the Resort! January 16 th 18 th, 2016 Martin Luther King Jr. weekend is the great mid-month Holiday. The Resort tends to be in full swing by this point with a good base. Bring up the whole family to test out that gear that Santa brings. There are only 6 weeks left of the snow season at this point so come and join us for all the snow you can! Live music at Last Chair Saloon provided by JUNIPER CITY. February 13, 2016 Annual Brian Head Town Snowmobile Poker Run The annual poker run will begin in Brian Head and go to Duck Creek and back. Enjoy the scenic views of Southern Utah on snow mobile trails, with 7 poker stops. The day will end with dinner at Cedar Breaks Lodge, where prizes will be awarded in various categories. He began his first term on January 1, 1996 and his current term will end December 31, 2015. Friday & Saturday On-call shuttle runs 9:00 am to 10:00 pm Sunday On-call shuttle runs 9:00 am to 5:00 pm HOLIDAY SCHEDULE On-call shuttle runs 9:00 am to 10:00 pm Holiday Dates Include: Christmas/New Year s: Dec 19, 2015 Jan 2, 2016 -New Year s Eve, on-call shuttles will run until 2:00 am Martin Luther King Weekend: Jan 16-18, 2016 -Mon, Jan 18, shuttles will run 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Presidents Weekend: Feb 14-16, 2016 -Mon, Feb 16, shuttles will run 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Jim has contributed a lot to the Town of Brian Head over the years. Some of his accomplishments have been: 1) he played a big part in adopting the Retail Business License Fee; 2) he has been an employee advocate to the Town employees; 3) he helped with three revisions to Brian Head s Land Management Code; 4) he has always pushed for new development in the Town of Brian Head; and 5) he instigated and supported lowering property taxes for residents and secondary home owners in Brian Head for the past few years. Jim has lots of knowledge about government issues. He s worked with a variety of other Council members, Town Managers, and Town employees and has a deep understanding of the needs of the Town. December 2015 Brian Head Town News Page 4 From Brian Head Public Safety Department..... (by Brad Benson, Deputy Marshal) The Brian Head Fire Department is pleased to announce that Danny Abbott was recently hired as the new Deputy Fire Marshal for the Town of Brian Head. With this new position filled, the Public Safety Department will be better prepared to respond to any fire related emergency. Danny s duties will include such things as weekly fire engine inspections and maintenance, preparedness inspections of all firefighting equipment and residential fire inspections. Danny will also be responding to all medical emergencies. Danny has a long list of qualifications for this job that will be a great asset for Brian Head Town. Danny grew up in Sandy, Utah but spent many summers and holidays in Paragonah and Cedar City visiting his grandparents. His mother is from Cedar City and his father is from Paragonah. Danny moved to southern Utah after high school and currently resides in Paragonah. Danny is married to Heather and has one daughter named Emmary and another daughter due to be born sometime this month. He enjoys spending his free time outdoors: camping, hunting, fishing and four wheeling. He also enjoys reading, studying and kicking back and watching a good movie. Danny has many certifications related to public safety. He is currently certified as a Paramedic, having worked for Iron County Ambulance and now with Gold Cross Ambulance service. His firefighting certifications include Structure Fire levels 1 and 2, Wildland firefighter 1 and 2, and instructor one. Danny began working for Brian Head Fire Department as a volunteer in January 2014 where his experience and firefighting skills have been a great benefit to the department. His cheerful and friendly personality has served our community very well. He is currently enrolled at POST (Police Officer Standards and Training) and is about to complete category 2 training. He then plans on continuing his police training to become a fully certified, category one police officer. The Brian Head Fire Department is very excited to have Danny Abbott as the newest addition to the Public Safety team. Welcome Aboard! Jeff Morgan gets sworn in as new Planning Commission member - December 1, 2015 New Alternate Member Appointed to Brian Head Town Planning Commission Jeff Morgan has been appointed as the new Planning Commission alternate board member. He joins the other Planning Commission members: Carrie Devers (Chair Person); Doug Deutschlander, Mac Hatch, Georg Hartlmaier, and Shaun Kelly. As you can see, the Brian Head Planning Commission is made up of 5 members and 1 alternate member. The alternate member serves in the absence of a regular member. The Planning Commission is a recommending board that hears all land issues (i.e. requests for zone changes, property plat adjustments, conditional use permits tied to properties, building and signage issues) and makes recommendations to the Town Council. You can read more about the powers and duties of the Planning Commission in Utah Code Annotated Title 10, Utah Municipal Code; Section 9a, Municipal Land Use, Development, and Management Act; Chapter 3, Planning Commission; Section 302, Planning Commission Powers and Duties.

People from all over the world spend their vacation in Utah to visit our area. With the latest snowstorm at Christmas, the mountain has been packed with skiers, snowboarders, snowmobilers, and snow-shoers. The Rodionov family enjoyed the slopes and some crosscountry skiing during the most recent snowstorm. They loved it! They also enjoyed visiting Bryce Canyon and Zions National Park. They stayed at a local hotel and participated in the kids activities too! What a fun family! We hope they felt welcome in our beautiful Town.
