May 2015 Volume 9, Issue 7 Liberty Middle School 1612 NE Garfield. Camas, WA 98607 http://schools.camas.wednet.edu/liberty From our Principal Spring! Flowers, baseball, the Spring musical, and state testing. These are a few of our favorite things! Congratulations to Mrs. Hamlin and the cast of Pirates of Penzance, Junior for three tremendous shows this past weekend. Thank you parents, whether you helped backstage, provided snacks, or transported actors and actresses your dedication and assistance is very much appreciated. Right before the play, we were informed that Liberty has received the Washington State Academic Achievement Award, for the sixth year in row and every year since the award s inception! We were recognized in the areas of Reading Improvement and Overall Excellence, so we will have another banner to hang in our front entryway shortly. In addition to this honor, Liberty has been named a national Model School! A team including me, Mrs. Kankelberg and Ms. Hofer will present Liberty s teacher leadership and collaboration practices at the national conference in Georgia at the end of June. But wait, there s more! Liberty was honored as the Best Middle School in Clark County in The Columbian newspaper s Reader s Choice contest. We learned all of this great news within a two-week period, and I couldn t be prouder of the students and staff for attaining this level of recognition. It s due to the passion and dedication of our staff and the students accepting that we refuse to let them coast by. Go Lions! Team 6 starts the mandatory state Smarter Balanced Assessments today, with Team 8 following next week and Team 7 after that. We are essentially testing every day now through June 9, so please be sure your scholar is aware of when they take the English/Language Arts and math tests, as well as the 8th grade Science MSP. On days they take tests, we want to be sure they have gotten plenty of rest and have a hearty breakfast and a snack. 2nd Chance Breakfast will be available. You will receive a grade-level-specific message through School Messenger prior to your scholar beginning the test cycle. If you have questions please ask! We want our students to feel their hard work has paid off, not just for this assessment but in preparation for advancing to the next grade. Thanks for sharing them with us! Liberty Middle School. 1612 NE Garfield. (360) 833-5850 Page 5 PTO Is Back! One of the factors that makes Liberty Middle School so successful is the community that is created on campus. Parents, teachers, staff and students work together to produce excellent outcomes each day. This year, one element of that community was missing: the PTO (Parent Teacher Organization). For a variety of reasons, the Liberty PTO took a year off this year, and a dedicated group of parents stepped in and made sure that events and activities central to life at Liberty continued to take place. Liberty is not the same without the formal support of a PTO, so we are bringing it back for the 2015-2016 school year! The first meeting of the LMS PTO will be held at 6:30 pm on May 26 th. Please come meet us in the Commons! It is not uncommon for middle school students to discourage their parents from participating in school events-the desire for independence is a normal part of adolescent development. However, students whose parents remain active in their schools tend to have better grades and fewer behavioral and social issues. PTO is an easy way to remain involved in your child s education while allowing your child to feel independent. Meetings will be held once a month, on campus, and will alternate between morning and evening times to allow for maximum participation. PTO is a great way to be involved in Liberty, and does not demand much time. A variety of leadership positions are available, although you can participate without taking a formal role. PTO supports Liberty s students, faculty, and staff by fundraising, assisting with organizing school events (Camp Liberty, March Madness, Paw Party), providing teacher grants, operating the Spirit Shack, and hosting events throughout the school year. Come join the fun. Join the PTO! Officers 2015-2016 President: Alison Benjamin Vice President: Tamara Stanley Treasurer: Taunya Steinbrook THIS COULD BE YOU! Interested? Contact Alison Benjamin. Secretary: Please contact Alison Benjamin at alisonbenjamin123@gmail.com with questions about Liberty s PTO.
