MAVERICKS FOOTBALL GRIDIRON NEWS Mavericks trample the McCollum Cowboys 27 to 14 Ethan Johnston rushes for 172 yards By: Conrado Perez, Jr. Eagle Pass Sports Central Your best and only source for local sports news in Eagle Pass The C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity football team under the guidance of head football coach Eric Villasenor coming off their Open week returned to their gridiron battles on Thursday, October 12, 2017 to open their quest for the District 29-5A football title by hosting the San Antonio McCollum Cowboys in a 7:00PM district opener at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium. The visiting McCollum Cowboys entered this game sporting an overall season record of 0-5 while the home standing C.C. Winn Mavericks ventured into this encounter with an overall season record of 1-4. The visiting McCollum Cowboys wasted no time whatsoever to dent the scoreboard even before the crowd in attendance were barely comfortable in their stadium seats as their standout 1 / 8

running back Jonathan Handy tallied a 64 yard sprint to pay dirt on the Cowboys very first play from scrimmage with 11:43 showing o the first quarter clock. Placekicker Brian Martinez tacked on the point after to give the Cowboys the early 7 to 0 lead in this district opening matchup. The home standing Mavericks answered back on their second offensive possession of the game with a 48 yard scoring drive mixing up their short passing game along with a productive hardnosed running attack predominately utilizing the services of young starting signal caller Ethan Johnston who capped off the scoring drive with a 7 yard keeper into the end zone behind the fine blocking of the Mavericks offensive line with 4:06 left in the opening period. The point after attempt was no good as it bounced off the upright. The Mavericks then proceeded to orchestrate a well executed 74 yard scoring drive midway in the second period with the patented running game but the key play of the drive was a perfectly timed third down conversion pass play from Ethan Johnston to wide receiver Luis Olvera who made a sensational catch out jumping the Cowboys defender who was draped all over him at the McCollum 3 yard line. A few plays later Mavericks signal caller Ethan Johnston punctuated the long scoring drive with a 4 yard blast to pay dirt with 8:26 left in the first half. Ernesto Fuentes split the uprights with the point after to give the mighty Mavericks a 13 to 7 lead at halftime much to the delight of the Mavericks Nation in attendance. During the halftime break the crowd in attendance were entertained by the award winning Thundering Mavericks Band who won first place this past Saturday at the Rocket Review Marching Festival held at the Converse-Judson ISD Rutledge Stadium as well as first place at the Capital City Marching Festival held at the Toney Burger Center in Austin, Texas as well as first place Color Guard, second place Percussion and the coveted People s Choice Award. 2 / 8

Midway into the third quarter, the McCollum Cowboys manufactured a 56 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a 5 yard run by tailback Jonathan Handy with 4:54 left in the third period. Brian Martinez converted the point after to give the Cowboys a 14 to 13 lead over the Mavericks. Late in the third quarter the key turning point of this game occurred when the Mavericks offense was forced punt from their 47 yard line. Mavericks punter Ernesto Villasenor boomed a 48 yard punt all the way to the McCollum five yard line but for some reason instead of possibly letting the ball roll into the end zone for a touchback, the McCollum return man tried to field the ball near the goal line and managed to bobble it into the end zone which was recovered by special teams player Azael Rodriguez for a go ahead touchdown for the Mavericks with 3:37 left in the third quarter. Ernesto Fuentes tacked on the point after to give the Mavericks a 20 to 14 lead over the stunned McCollum Cowboys. In the fourth and final period of this district opening encounter the proud Mavericks added an insurance score with a 69 yard scoring drive that was capped off with a little trickery with quarterback executing a fake handoff to tailback Fernando Zapata over let tackle and then gave a reverse pitch to slot back receiver Luis Olvera who waltzed untouched into the end zone around right end with 7:20 left in the game. Ernesto Fuentes closed out the scoring o the night by converting the point after to give the Mavericks a well earned 27 to 14 victory over the McCollum Cowboys. With time winding down in this game the Mavericks had another excellent opportunity to tack on another score when they were perched deep in the red zone but the ever classy head football coach Eric Villasenor show great sportsmanship by having his quarter back simply take a knee on two consecutive snaps to run out the clock instead of adding another meaningless 3 / 8

score to add insult to injury. The Mavericks patented hard hitting and quick pursuing defense spearheaded by their duo of standout linebackers Miguel De Los Santos and Ernesto Villasenor along with Ricardo Morales, Alexis Morales, Isaias Gonzalez, Alejandro Ontiveros, Xavier Cerezo, Domingo Duran, Brandon Wheeler, and Zael Rodriguez managed to hold the McCollum Cowboys to a measly total of 45 yards rushing in the second half of this contest. The victorious C.C. Winn Mavericks varsity football team will return to their district gridiron battles next Friday, October 20, 2017 when they host the tough San Antonio Southside Cardinals in a 7:30 PM District 29-5A encounter at the Eagle Pass ISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in a game that is designated as C.C. Winn High School s 2017 Homecoming Game. OFFICIAL GAME TEAM STATS: MAVERICKS OPPONENT First Downs 15 7 4 / 8
