Mountain West Network ~ SEC Network + ACC Network Extra # ESPNU Florida State heads into the third week of conference play in a tie for fourth in the conference with a 3-1 ACC record. Only Pitt, Louisville and Syracuse remain unbeaten. The Seminoles swept Virginia last weekend for their third straight conference sweep. They were then the first to take a set off of Pitt in the ACC season, but dropped the last three sets for FSU s first conference loss this season. All seven of FSU s wins have come in straight-set decisions this season. Last season s match against NC State in Tallahassee lasted three hours and two minutes, making it the longest match FSU saw last season. Each set was decided in no more than three points, and the Wolfpack took the fifth set 22-20. Florida State has played North Carolina more than any other team in program history. Sunday will mark the 65 th meeting between the two programs. The Seminoles will have 23 games broadcast on either a digital or linear channel, including one match on ESPN2, one on Big Ten Network, one on BTN Plus, one on Mountain West network, one on SEC Network, and 18 on ACC Network Extra. FSU holds a 1,118-513 all-time record. MATCH #15: NC STATE SCOUTING THE WOLFPACK NC State returns 14 players this season and brought on six newcomers. AVCA Honorable Mention Kylie Pickrell returns this season and leads the team with 603 assists (10.77) and ranks second with 129 digs. Returning opposite hitter Melissa Evans leads with 196 kills, followed by middle blocker Teni Sopitan with 192. Pickrell leads the team with five solo blocks. Pickrell s 10.77 assists per set ranks second in the ACC and 35 th in the nation, while her 603 total assists ranks second in the conference and 56 th nationally. Grad transfer Keira Moore leads the team with 34 total blocks (three solo). FSU s 2017 NCAA Tournament opponent Washington State snapped NC State s 12-match home winning streak earlier this season in four sets. FSU vs NCSU Florida State leads the series between the two teams 46-7, and leads the ACC series between them 43-6. NC State has won the last two matches in the series, but before that FSU had won 31 straight against the Wolfpack and had not lost since 1999. Last season s match between the two teams lasted three hours and two minutes, making it the longest match the Seminoles saw all season. Every one of the five sets was decided in no more than three points, with the final set going to the Wolfpack 22-20. MATCH #16: NORTH CAROLINA SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS UNC had a tough non-conference schedule this season, picking up wins over UNCG, Maryland Eastern Shore, Oklahoma and Elon. The team s only losses came to opponents who were ranked or received votes in the AVCA Top-25. The Tar Heels started off conference play hosting Notre Dame and Louisville, falling in straight sets to the Fighting Irish and in five to the Cardinals. Most recently, UNC rallied from behind to defeat NC State at home before dropping a road match to Virginia Tech. It marked the team s first conference win this season. Ava Bell has taken command of UNC s offense the past two weeks, hitting a team-best.392 in ACC play. Destiny Cox leads the team with 164 kills, 3.57 kills/set. Head Coach Joe Sagula is one of only two other ACC coaches remaining in the conference since Coach Poole arrived in 2008 (along with Duke s Jolene Nagel). FSU vs UNC Florida State leads the series between the two teams 40-24, with a 30-20 ACC record against the Tar Heels. To have the opportunity to play a sport I love, get an education, and leave with so many life lessons was the real gift. The fact that somehow I am being honored in all of this I am genuinely humbled. I m always excited to come back to Tallahassee and meet new friends and see some old friends. Tallahassee and Florida State University hold such a special place in my heart. - Gabby Reece Arguably Florida State s most well-known volleyball alumna, former middle hitter Gabrielle Reece is more than just one of the world s most famous models. From 1987-90, Reece terrorized oncoming attackers as she racked up 747 total blocks, including 240 solo. 50 YEARS OF WOMEN S INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS: Florida State celebrates the 50th year of women s intercollegiate athletics in the 2018-19 season. The Seminoles will celebrate the milestone with a series of celebrations and reunions, and will promote the campaign on social media using #GarnetandGolden. DOMINANT DECADE: FSU is one of only 12 programs in the country to make the last nine NCAA Tournaments (along with Colorado State, Florida, Hawaii*, Iowa State, Kentucky, Nebraska*, Penn State*, Stanford*, Texas*, USC* and Washington*). The team has discussed what the phrase means to each of them individually, and it is a mindset that is kept as a reminder to push through whatever challenges and obstacles they may face throughout the season. Last season, BRIANNE BURKERT became the first Seminole since Cassie McLaughlin (2003) to earn a triple double, and the first to ever record multiple kill-assist-dig triple-doubles. Consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in his tenure, making FSU one of only 12 programs to make the last nine tournaments. AVCA All-American Honors, including two Second Team and one Third Team recognition. Contests with AVCA Top-25 teams since he started overseeing scheduling in 2009. AVCA TOP-25 WINS UNDER COACH POOLE Entering his eleventh year at Florida State, head coach Chris Poole has established the Seminoles as fixture in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 and among the elite programs in the nation, as he has rejuvenated a program that has proven itself as a national contender year in and year out. In his tenure, Poole has led the Seminoles to nine consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, making FSU one of only 12 programs in the nation to accomplish the feat. The team has been ranked in the AVCA Top-15 at some point over the last nine seasons, and has defeated 26 AVCA Top-25 programs since his arrival. Since the beginning of the 2009 season, when Poole began overseeing the scheduling process, the Seminoles have gone head-to-head with 16 different non-conference opponents that were ranked in the top 25 of the AVCA polls in the regular season. Since his arrival at FSU, the Seminoles have seen 45 contests against Top-25 teams. By facing those upper echelon programs, Poole has established Florida State s schedule as one of the most difficult in the nation for the last seven years. Poole has led the Seminoles to three ACC Championships and four conference runner-up finishes. FSU has now made two NCAA Tournament Second Round appearances, and has made it to the Sweet Sixteen three times, as well as one visit to the Elite Eight and one Final Four finish. For his squad s multiple successes, Poole garnered ACC Coach of the Year and AVCA Division I East Region Coach of the Year honors in both 2009 and 2011. Poole has coached 15 different All-Americans, with 21 honors since 2009. Brianna Barry became the first Seminole to ever be named the ACC s Player of the Year and she also garnered AVCA Division I Second-Team All-American honors. Ashley Neff became the second to earn the ACC Player of the Year recognition, while Taryn Knuth became Poole s first ACC Freshman of the Year and AVCA East Region Freshman of the Year in 2017. A native of Heber Springs in north-central Arkansas, Poole is a 1983 graduate of Arkansas Tech and earned a master s degree from there in 1989. He is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association and has served on the AVCA s All-American, All-South Region and All-South Region Ranking committees and is also an AVCA Top 25 voter. Poole and his wife, Toni, a former Arkansas State track and field standout, have two children, son Joshua, a Florida State graduate, and daughter Taylor.
