The tip of the day is to apply your sunscreen and to have a great respect for all bodies of water. Speaking of the pool, a few of you are already enjoying the pool area as the weather has been great the past month. On Friday, May 1 st we will open the Tiki Bar and will have activities planned throughout the summer with our biggest bashes being on Memorial Day, the 4 th of July and Labor Day. We will have the Tiki stocked with sunscreen, T shirts, tank tops, sun glasses and other fun items. On the weekends we will have entertainment one day and will have the BBQ Grill operating both days for your lunch and afternoon munchie needs. A few reminders as summer approaches and the pool is getting busier. Please make sure that you do not consume tobacco products while in the pool or hot tub and please discard of them in the ashtrays provided. Also, for everyone s enjoyment and safety, the hot tub is to be used by adults and children 13 years of age and older. Thank you for your help on these two items as they get brought to my attention often by your fellow members and we all need to respect everyone at the pool. For all of you golfers, we are excited to see good growing weather as we have had a very bad winter and transition into spring on the course. We are on a very aggressive agronomic plan right now and we are replacing sod in some of the bare areas on the greens in order to expedite the recovery process. We have consulted many experts within our company as well as outside resources to make sure we perform the very best practices toward recovery as well as to make sure we cultivate healthier turf so these problems do not arise in the future. Thank you for your continued loyalty and patience during this time. We will be continuing the bunker renovations throughout the year as we reshape some, turn some into grass bunkers and grow the cord grass in others to blend in with the existing landscape. If you are interested in joining the newly formed Venetian Bay Men s Golf Association please call the pro shop or stop by to sign up. They will hold tournaments such as member guest and club championships throughout the year and the success will depend on great participation by our golf as well as social members. Give us a call today to sign up. 386-424-5775 ext. 1. Thank you for your continued patronage and a big welcome to those of you that are new to the community. We are here to serve you and wish you a safe and FUN spring.
By Buddy Tate (Golf Course Superintendent) April Golf Maintenance April at Venetian Bay finds the Golf Course Maintenance department busy with repair and renovation projects. The cloudy, wet weather throughout the winter was a perfect storm for disease and conditions detrimental to our greens. Turfgrasses need three key elements to grow; water, oxygen and sunlight. Without any one of these components, turf will start to decline. A consistent pattern of clouds and rainfall restricted the amount of oxygen and sunlight needed to sustain turf health. It has come as no surprise that our greens have suffered. Fortunately, we have had a normal weather pattern of late and expect a full recovery soon. Many areas of our greens have been sodded to expedite the recovery process. Frequent fertilizing and aggressive cultural practices will have our greens better than ever in a few weeks. Our bunker projects will be an ongoing sight throughout the next several months. We have discovered a drainage method that will fix those that are nonfunctioning or slow to drain. We have also begun contouring some of the steep faced bunkers and the results are great. The transformation to a smaller pot bunker style is more aesthetically pleasing and easier on the high handicapper. Several others have been filled and sodded to eliminate the hazard altogether. The numerous bunkers that are out of play and were planted with cordgrass are starting to grow in. Although somewhat unsightly now, they will blend with the surrounding landscape soon. We have made a number of preventative applications in the past few weeks. Insect and weed control have been applied early to avoid any infestations for the summer months. We have developed an agronomic plan that has consistent applications for both insects and weeds throughout the year. Each application will be more effective until the weed and insect pressure is at a minimum. The playability and aesthetics of our course will continually improve as these problems subside. With the recent proactive approach to maintaining the course, we have positioned ourselves to have an excellent growing season. Playing conditions will continue to improve and remain at a high level in the near future. I want to thank everyone for their patience during this transition period. We expect our conditions to return better than ever very soon. I look forward to seeing you on the course.
