Derby Fish and Game Club Newsletter Spring 2017 Thoughts from the Board As we begin another season of Club activities, we would like to remind everyone of the amazing resource we have at our club. We offer many shooting events as well as Hunter and Bow Hunter education courses. In addition, our club offers our members and guests a safe, scenic place to practice your skills and socialize on your schedule. All of our events are staffed by our board of directors and members. Please remember to purchase your membership every year as memberships are required to utilize the range and participate in activities. Our club is funded exclusively through memberships and entry fees for our shoots. Without the funds from sales of memberships, it would be impossible for our club to continue to provide such a valuable community resource. Memberships can be purchased at Wright s Sporting Goods, The Farmyard Store, Mr. O s Sporting Goods, and Green Mountain Sporting Goods. Memberships can also be purchased through any of the officers or directors of the club. My wishes for all to have a happy and healthy 2017. See you at the range, Officers and Directors of the Derby Fish and Game Club Web Site Earlier this year, the club created a new website. Our new address is: www.derbyfishandgameclub.com. If you are a member and would like to have a Fish or Game photo added to the web site just get the photo to one of the directors and we can put it on the web-site. Range Rule No exploding targets are allowed at the range This is for everyone s safety.

Results of the 2016.22 Fun Shoot This year the club decided to modify our.22 Fun Shoot by rescheduling the shoot to the same Saturday as our Hunter s Safety Course Field Day. This year, the shoot took place on September 17 th, 2016. Great weather greeted shooters as they participated in the shoot. The shoot is for all ages but kids get the added excitement of their name being entered into a drawing for a Brand New.22 Rifle!! This year the generous gift of the.22 was made possible by a very generous donation from Bob and Diane McDowell, formerly of Newport. Shooters shot two courses of fire, one at paper targets, and another at knock down animal targets. At the end of the shoot, the lucky winner of the.22 rifle was drawn. This year s winner was Austin Lathe of Newport. He received a new rifle from the Club. Come join us this year on September 16th for a fun filled day for both adults and children. Again this year, we will be giving away another.22 rifle as a junior doorprize!! Fun 3-D Archery Shoots Last year the club returned to a summer schedule of two archery shoots at the club. The shoots were held on July 17 th, August 28 th. Both shoots were well attended and we saw an increase in the number of young archers who attempted our course. All who attended appeared to have a good time hiking through the woods practicing their skills. Some of the attendees were even brave enough to take a chance on our steel deer and long distance bear. This year we will continue to hold two shoots. They will be held on July 16 th and August 27 th. The course will be ready at around 8:00 am and will be taken down at 2:00 pm. The cost of the shoot is $15.00 and includes a membership to the range. If the shooter is currently a member, the cost is reduced to $5.00 per shooter. There will also be lunch available for purchase on site. If further information is needed, please contact Doug at 895-2853 or Jaret at 766-5447. In addition to the two archery shoots, the club also maintains a archery practice range. The range is located on the trail behind the club house. Please contact Jaret at 766-5447 if you would like more information about the practice rang

Rabbit Shoot Last year, we held our Rabbit Hunt Dinner again at Coutts Siskin Camp in Derby. The camp is located near Salem Lake in Derby. The rustic cabin appears to be a perfect setting for our dinner. The camp directors prepared an amazing meal of ham, chicken, mashed potatoes and numerous other sides. Attendees also had their choice of many different homemade desserts. We are excited by this partnership with the camp as they use the funds raised through our dinner to help sponsor tuition to their summer camps for young campers. We will hold our dinner at the camp again this year. Pre-Registration is required to the dinner and further information can be obtained by contacting Jessica Judd at Jessicajudd76@yahoo.com or calling 766-5447. Trap Shooting 2016 was a great year for the trap range. We shoot every Wednesday evening once the range is open through the last Wednesday in September. Watch the website for our start-up date. We start shooting at 5:00 pm until everyone has shot all they want. The cost is $4.00 per round. All safe shooters are welcome. Come have some fun shooting with us. We also hold four Sunday shoots that start at 12:00 pm. They are being held: June 11 th 101 shoot 2 rounds of singles at 16 yards, 1 round of handicap at 22 yards and 13 pairs of doubles. July 9 th 50/50 shoot 2 rounds of singles at 16 yards and 50 pairs of doubles at 16 yards. August 13 th Ben Heath Trap Shoot 4 rounds of singles at 16 yards. NRA Women on Target The NRA Women on Target firearm training provides instruction in safe firearm handling and shooting skills. The women students receive training from qualified instructors on the club s safe range facilities. The day long course is designed to be both informational and enjoyable for the women students. All the materials necessary for the course will be provided by the instructors. In 2016, two NRA WOT programs were held at Derby Fish and Game Club. They were held on June 11 th and September 24 th. Kay McIsaac Healy is one of the lead instructors and teachers many Women on Target Classes throughout the state. All women who have attended the course have enjoyed it immensely. The 2017 NRA WOT program will be held on May 21 st and September 10 th at 8:30. Please contact Kay at 334-0511 or 334-4327 for addition information.
