I trust that all members had a good Christmas break and are now ready to get back into badminton to burn off the extra calories acquired. With the new roster now commenced I would like to wish all players an enjoyable roster. I would like to thank those that have put the teams together, it s not an easy task, and unfortunately we haven t been able to find places for everybody. Those that have missed out please put your name down to fill- in, and everything will be done in future to get you into a team. GOSEN Summer Tournament Please consider participating in this new and early tournament, this is open to all grades including a social grade for those newer and lower division players. Court Etiquette Things we should do to enhance our playing experience. Ensure that the shuttle is returned to your opponent, by hitting it gently it back over the net, not hitting it along the court surface. When picking up the shuttle, with your racquet, ensure that you are not hitting the feathers. Do not call out whilst you opponent is hitting the shuttle. Shake hands with your opponent. Thank the umpire. Yours in badminton Robert Brockman, President

From the Umpire s Chair: Service In a correct service: i) neither side shall cause undue delay to the delivery of the service once the server and the receiver are ready for the service; ii) the server and the receiver shall stand within diagonally opposite service courts without touching the boundary lines of the service courts; iii) some part of both feet of the server and the receiver shall remain in contact with the surface of the court in a stationary position from the start of the service until the service is delivered; iv) the server s racquet shall initially hit the base of the shuttle; v) the whole shuttle shall be below the server s bottom rib at the instant of being hit by the server s racquet; vi) the shaft of the server s racquet at the instant of hitting the shuttle shall be pointing in a downward direction; vii) the movement of the server s racquet shall continue forwards from the start of the service until the service is delivered; viii) the flight of the shuttle shall be upwards from the server s racquet to pass over the net so that, if not intercepted, it shall land in the receiver s service court (i.e. on or within the boundary lines); and ix) in attempting to serve, the server shall not miss the shuttle. Once the players are ready for the service, the first forward movement of the server s racquet head shall be the start of the service. Once started, the service is delivered when the shuttle is hit by the server s racquet (or, in attempting to serve, the server misses the shuttle). The server shall not serve before the receiver is ready. However, the receiver shall be considered to have been ready if a return of the service is attempted. In doubles, during the delivery of the service, the partners may take up any positions within their respective courts which do not un-sight the opposing server or receiver.
Asics Court Shoes: Gel Resolution OffCourt Badminton: Product Review Are your feet feeling the effects of roster play over the next few days? At OffCourt we strongly recommend the Asics indoor shoe range with the $95 rockets being an ideal shoe for the hard courts of the STBA centre. The entire Asics range has plenty of cushioning foam and gel allowing for higher shock absorption than most other indoor shoes. However, if you are wearing through your shoes quickly on the abrasive surface we recommend trying the GEL- Resolution 7 (Hardcourt Outsole) at $175. This shoe is specifically designed for hard courts and has more durable outer rubber that considerably extends the life of the shoe (approximately 2 fold). Although this is marketed as a tennis shoe it is ideal for handling the rigors of badminton play on our courts at the STBA. OffCourt will have the new season s shoes arriving in February including a number of other shoes also in the range. Please feel free to ask us in store or email tooffcourt101@gmail.com for any badminton inquires. With 40 years combined badminton experience Will and Rowan will be happy to assist in any way we can.
