When we are healthy, the air sacs in the lungs are elastic, they bunce back t their riginal shape after being stretched ut r filled with air when we inhale, just the way a balln des. But in peple with COPD, the air sacs n lnger d that, they lse that elastic quality, and the airways can becme thicker than nrmal. Peple with COPD als might find they have mre mucus in the lungs. Frm thse readings, he r she will be able t assess hw well yur lungs are wrking and whether r nt yu need t wrry abut COPD. Hst: S the key is getting diagnsed. Edna: Abslutely. Frm there, yu and yur dctr can cme up with a plan t manage yur symptms, breathe easier, and lead a mre active life. Hst: But Edna, we bth knw that nt everyne likes ging t the dctr, especially if it means he s ging t tell them t quit smking! Edna: I knw, that was me! I had smked fr XX years when I was diagnsed, and it was hard t hear that I had t give it up. But I knew it was the nly way I wuld be able t 4

It s tugh t quit, I can tell yu first hand, but it is wrth the effrt. Once I quit smking, started taking medicatin, and ding sme regular exercise, I felt a lt mre like my ld self again.
