Hope everyone is having a good summer so for, I know we have not got much riding in with the weather being what it has been. We do have a lot planned for the coming months ahead. The month of August we have the Ride for Kids and also the district picnic and several more rides. The Ride for Kids is a fundraiser for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation which is something the Goldwingers hold very dear to their hearts. The ride will be held on Sunday, August 16 th. We hope you plan on attending. Also in August we have the Region E Rally, which is being held in Green Bay, Wisc. 6 th 7 th 8 th of August. Our very own district couple of the year, Paul & Cheryl Engelman, and district individual of the year Jan Bacon, will be competing for region couple of the year and region individual of the year. We are very proud of them, so please wish them well on their trip to Wisconsin. We hope everybody is enjoying the summer and please be safe while out riding. Well I really hope that we get to start riding our Wings soon!!!!! It feels like it has been forever since we were able to ride with the group!!!! This month we were able to celebrate National Ice Cream Day at Ginny's on July 19th, we had 37 members present with Pam Bolding won the 50/50. On July 21st we had our monthly dinner ride to Viviano's in Fenton, where we had 22 members present. Let's all keep our fingers crossed that we are able to get together soon for some great rides!!!! REDUCING THE RISK Mike and Barb Bayuk Chapter Z Educators Caught In The Rain? This summer the Midwest has been daunted by frequent rain and some severe storms. Mother Nature has caused quite a few cancellations of our planned rides. I do believe most of us are getting the riding itch and about to say the heck with it, I am going to ride regardless. With that said we know that we are taking the inevitable chance that we are probably going to get wet sometime. The key element in being able to enjoy a day riding in the rain is good rain gear. These days virtually any rain suit from a reputable motorcycle-accessory firm will keep you dry in a downpour. The factors that set some apart are ease of entry, conspicuous colors, and comfort. Water proof boots or boot covers and any type of waterproof glove complete the ensemble and makes riding in the rain tolerable. One other consideration is the type of helmet you are wearing. Full face or full face modular helmets provide more protection than an open face helmet or open face with a face shield. There are 2 more important issues to confront vision and traction. Traction seems to be the primary concern for most riders. Manhole covers, bridge gratings, painted intersection, bridge expansion joints, center of lanes in the roads where oil and grease build up are not washed away in the first 5-10 minutes of a rain. They actually become much more slippery. Railroad tracks are dangerous even in dry weather let alone in the rain. Adequate tire tread and proper tire inflation must be maintained at all times. When riding in a group, allow a little more distance between you and the bike in front. Remember traction has now been reduced. Use a smooth approach to speed and direction changes. Watch those puddles on the roads that could cause hydroplaning especially with trikes. Vision not only for you but others is imperative. It s the old see and be seen statement. The best rain gear color is the bright yellow or safety green or orange. Rainy weather is usually a gray to dark environment. These color stick out. A foggy face shield can be just as aggravating. Some tricks that have been used to prevent fogging are RainX, various commercial anti fogging solutions or a thin layer of hand or dish soap. Just wipe it on wet or dry and polish it off. Last but not least is making sure all marker lights are functioning properly. This should be part of your TCLOCK before you ride. Again make sure you are seen! AS ALWAYS RIDE OFTEN, RIDE HARD BUT MOST OF ALL RIDE SMART. Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge 5
Our Motto... Share the Road! Our Mission... To Facilitate A Reduction In Motorcycle Crashes With Other Motor Vehicles. We have written a lot this season about safety tips and how to ride safely. This time we would like to write about something we all wish would never happen but unfortunately does, having an accident. Accidents happen every day to even the most careful drivers or riders. Getting help as quickly as possible is so important as is trained first responders for injuries. We have great classes offered by GWRRA to train for this. Having information for emergency personnel in the event that you are unable to answer for yourself is very important. Several riders have a card of information on their bikes others carry a card in their wallet. There are several free sites on the internet that let you create a medical information card. (CLICK HERE and see link under HEALTH INFORMATION.) Please consider doing this for yourself and your co-rider. Another safety information thing to do is to list your ICE (IN CASE OF EMERGENGY) numbers first in your cell phone. Having this information for your car is also important. And grandparents like us who carry children in cars should also have the seats labeled as to who is in the seat and who their parents and ICE numbers are. As always friends ride safe and smart.
