Jim and the Beanstalk The story con4nues Unit 4, Mod. 3
Chapter 2 Remember our friend Jim? Well, I have a bit more to add to this story that is not in the book. It seems that on one of his last trips up and down the beanstalk, a lihle friend jumped off a leaf and into his backpack as Jim was climbing back down the vine. It was a worm! But, this was not any ordinary inchworm like Jim was used to seeing. This was a worm from the land of giants. No, this wasn t a lihle inchworm. This was a giant worm! M3,S1
What do you think of a worm this size? What would your mom or dad say if you pulled a worm that big out of your backpack arer school?
Well, when Jim went to school the next day, he told his friends about his giant worm. Of course, they could hardly believe it when Jim pulled it out of his backpack and the worm stretched out for a nap on Jim s desk. Jim and his friends wanted to know just how long the worm was. One of his friends said, That worm has to be 1 foot long! Since the worm was asleep, Jim and his friends decided to measure it.
Chapter 3 Remember the footworm that hopped into Jim s backpack as he was climbing down the vine coming back from a visit with the giant? Well, it gets even beher! Jim wrote a note to the giant about the footworm, and the giant wrote back to tell him that footworms are just babies compared to another kind of worm in the Giant Kingdom. Believe it or not, there are actually yardworms in the giant s garden! Imagine How long do you suppose a yardworm would be? M3, S2
You may not believe this, but these yardworms are prehy special. In the Giant Kingdom, all the worms are great friends. They help each other in the gardens, they play together, and they even travel together as they are out looking for food. Some4mes the worms have to travel great distances to find enough food to eat. As you can imagine, it is a lot harder for an inchworm to crawl across the playground than it is for a yardworm. When Jim asked the giant about this, the giant had a surprising answer. The yardworms actually give the footworms and the inchworms piggy- back rides! Can you imagine seeing that? Inchworms lined up on the back of a yard worm?
These inchworms are ge^ng a piggyback ride on a yardworm. Can you figure our how many inchworms this yardworm is carrying on its back?
Chapter 4 - Outside the Giant s Door Several months arer Jim chopped down the beanstalk, he awoke one morning to find another beanstalk had grown outside his window. Since his last visit with the giant he had been telling his friends about the giant, but none of his friends would believe him. With the new beanstalk outside his window, Jim had an idea about how he could convince them that the giant was real. He decided he would take five of his friends up the beanstalk and walk to the castle to meet the giant. M3, S3
When Jim told his friends about his plan, they were all very excited and everyone went to the beanstalk and began to climb. They climbed the beanstalk high into the clouds un4l they couldn t see the ground anymore. When they reached the top, they walked to the giant s castle and stood in front of the huge wooden door. On the ground by the door, there lay a giant envelope with a leher in it leaned up against the door. The giant must be working in his yard because he ler some of his tools up against the castle wall.
Chapter 5 - The End of the Story Nervously, Jim knocked on the huge wooden door. When the giant opened the door, Jim s friends let out a loud gasp as they looked up at the enormous man towering above them. They couldn t believe their eyes. The giant was real and so, so tall. The giant, surprised by six boys standing outside his door, let out a roar and exclaimed, Six juicy boys at my door! I will have a feast tonight! Jim yelled back, Giant, it s me Jim! Remember? M3, S4
Oh, of course I do. So glad to see you Jim, replied the giant. Obviously, the giant hadn t seen Jim standing among the boys and was very happy to see him. Everyone, come in for some giant cookies, said the giant. Jim had finally proven to his friends that the giant was real.
