Visit www.1nvrc.com for the latest club information Auction Update: Thank you to everyone who came out to the 2016 Fall Auction! The volunteers and kids from West Potomac High School did a fantastic job and everyone who came out had a great time. There were a LOT of great deals to be had! This event netted NVRC $745 in profit, but as word spreads about the new location we hope to see this number improve at future auctions. 5

Visit www.1nvrc.com for the latest club information MultiGP and NVRC By Matt Hale On the chilly Saturday morning October 29th with a fresh layer of frost at Poplar Ford, the NVRC MultiGP chapter assembled for our monthly practice session. Phil, Tung, Chris, and Matt braved the 39F temperature at the field to get in some gate flying time to prepare for our next race on November 13th. Phil setup one of the MultiGP gates in the middle of the field and Chris brought his tent pole bendable gate which was also setup. After a couple runs with temperatures still low and any crashes resulting in frost getting lodged into places it shouldn't in our quads we took a little break to let things warm up. Phil fired up a portable stove and fried up some spam for some breakfast spam sandwiches. Once the sun started melting the field off a bit it was time to get some more quad action going on. It's amazing what a little bit of practice can do as crashes were happening quite less frequently. We did have one lost quad situation in the south meadow, but luckily the beeper was still functioning and was located hanging in some tall grass approximately half way between the end of the field and the tree line. All in all we had a great practice session and are looking forward to the next race! S Early morning racing requires a hearty breakfast Spot the race quad in the tall grass 6 MultiGP Practice Session on 10/29

Visit www.1nvrc.com for the latest club information Air & Scare: Halloween at Udvar Hazy By Carl Lydick, Pictures by Terry Terrenoire On Saturday, October 22, NVRC participated in the annual Air & Scare event at the Udvar Hazy center. This event is always well attended and a TON of fun. We joined masses of Star Wars characters, Ghostbusters, and many others to celebrate Halloween and to share our hobby with the costumed guests. We had a large display covering everything from multirotors to large scale RC, had our trusty minion riling up kids, and ran a Realflight simulator so visitors could get a taste of RC for themselves. Thanks to the members who came out to help with the event! See more pictures from the event on the NVRC Forum! 8

October Meeting Minutes: By Terry Terrenoire, NVRC Secretary Called to order at 7:33 by Carl There were 25 members present, 2 guests, Brian and David Bob Burnett announced that the auction netted $745 profit. About ½ of what we had budgeted for. It was announced that this past weekend we had 2 FAA visitors. One on Saturday and another on Sunday. They were both friendly and observed our operation, Members present showed them around and freely answered questions. There was no request for pilots to show FAA registration documents. Since we are inside the 30 mile restricted zone it is highly recommended that you properly label you planes. Today (10/20) we had 2 Fairfax County Sheriffs officers visit the field. Next year s slate of officers was presented: President: Mark Franke VP: John Roach Secretary: Terry Terrenoire Table Member(s) of Contents at Large: Bob Burnett, Paul Lucas Elections will take place at the next meeting. Meeting note: The next meeting will be a week early. November 10th. Lorton Update: In Bob s absence Carl announced that Bob had encountered even more obstacles but was continuing to jump thru the hoops as they are presented. Poplar Ford Update: John Roach showed some pictures of the old signage at the field along with some pictures of the partially updated signage. A work in progress. John also showed pictures of the new shed being delivered and put in place. The County now wants commercial drawings of the approved shelter. We were reminded of the upcoming Air and Scare this Saturday at the Museum. Gary is organizing this event for us. Meet up at Hobby Hangar at 9:00. 9

October Meeting Minutes: By Terry Terrenoire, NVRC Secretary We discussed the annual Toys for Tots fun fly to be held at club field on November 5th from 10 to noon. Pilots and spectators are asked to bring a child s present, unwrapped, with a value of $10.00, or more. Annual Christmas party and gift exchange will be Saturday, 12/3. $20 per person and $20 gift if you want to participate in exchange. Show and Tell Bob Burnett showed a Taperwing racer he built in 1986. Recently converted to electric using a 480 motor turning 33,000RPM. Don Szczur had 2 projects. He is building a Slow Boat made from foamboard available from Wal- Mart. Plans are available on line. Don s second project was a 23 gram indoor pattern plane. The airframe is mostly 1/32 inch balsa, reinforced with Boron fiber and covered with 2 mm Mylar. 10

October Meeting Minutes: By Terry Terrenoire, NVRC Secretary Matthew Hale Showed his racing quadcopter with full video and FPV equipment. Brian asked to speak and stressed the need for anyone flying at the field to acknowledge the declaration of another pilot to take off, or land. That way the pilot making the announcement Table of will Contents know everyone is aware of his intentions. The meeting was adjourned at 8:33 Respectfully submitted: Terry Terrenoire Secretary, NVRC 11

Editors Corner: By Carl Lydick Earlier this year I had a setback with the largest scratch build project I ve attempted. On her maiden flight my 96 span P-40 found her way into the fence. A post-mortem of the aborted takeoff run revealed several contributing factors. Insufficient rudder authority when the tailwheel lifted, that she started to lift just as I decided to abort the run and tip stalled when I reduced power, and a strut that may have had some play in it and twisted when the full weight came down on the left side. In any case she broke hard to the left and went straight into the fence, ripping the airframe into several pieces. Video of the incident can be seen HERE and HERE. I know we tempt fate when we finish a plane before flying, but when this build started I planned to maiden at Lorton. With Lorton always on the horizon I allowed myself to keep adding details until I was left with a finished plane. Eventually I decided to maiden her at Poplar As a foamy her wing loading is VERY light and I expect once dialed in she should do just fine there. Before the ill fated maiden And after The damage looked really bad. The fuselage broke into three pieces and there was a large chunk taken out Table of the of wing. Contents I put her aside for a few months to let my frustration subside and when I pulled her back out she looked fixable. Someone recently shared a quote with me that he attributed to the designer of this P-40, Keith Sparks. I like the quote so much I plan to steal it for myself. When asked why he was smiling after a bad crash Keith said When I started building this it was about 300 pieces. Now it's just nine. While it is tough to keep a positive mindset in the moments after a crash I m going to try to remember that if you can build it, you can fix it!
