WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2014 THE PALACE OF AUBURN HILLS DETROI T, MI TV: FOX SPORTS OHIO RADIO: WTAM 1100 AM 7:30 PM EST CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (19-33) AT DETROIT PISTONS (22-29) 2013-14 CLEVELAND CAVALIERS GAME NOTES REGULAR SEASON GAME #53 ROAD GA ME #27 CAVS QUICK FACTS The Cleveland Cavaliers are in Detroit tonight to take on the Pistons for their final game heading into the All-Star break. This is the second of four regular season meetings between the Central Division foes. The Cavs enter tonight s contest on a three-game winning streak for the second time this season (12/7-12/13). Offensively, the Cavs are averaging 106.0 points per game over the past five games. In the last three games, the Cavs are shooting a combined.500 (28-56) from the three-point line. Cleveland defeated Sacramento last night 109-99 at The Q where they dished out a season-high 30 assists on 41 made field goals. The last time the Cavs had 30 assists was Feb. 6, 2013 against Charlotte (33 assists). In last night s win, the Cavs held a 46-26 advantage in points in the paint and outrebounded the Kings 45-36. Cleveland also had 15 offensive rebounds that led to 15 second chance points. Among Eastern Conference teams, the Cavs rank 2 nd in offensive rebounds per game at 12.6 (4 th in NBA). Since the 2014 calendar year, the Cavs are pulling down 13.9 offensive rebounds per game (2 nd -most in NBA in 2014) and scoring 15.8 second chance points (3 rd in NBA in 2014). Cleveland s reserves have scored at least 50 points 11 times this season, including three of the last four contests. Over the past four games, the Cavs bench is averaging 52.8 points per game. On the season, the Cavs have the 2 nd -highest scoring bench in the Eastern Conference at 37.5 points per game (5 th in NBA). The last time the Cavs and Pistons squared off on Dec. 23 at The Q, Cleveland received 41 bench points. In the win over Sacramento, the Cavs had two bench players score at least 19 points (Dion Waiters-20, Anthony Bennett-19) for the first time since March 16, 2003 when Jumaine Jones (23) and Chris Mihm (19) were the subs for the Cavs that night versus Utah. Dion Waiters, who will be playing for Team Hill in the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge in New Orleans on Friday, is leading the Cavs bench with an Eastern Conference-best 14.7 points per game as a reserve (3 rd in NBA). His 12 20-point games as a reserve this season are the 3 rd -highest total in the NBA, behind Nick Young (16) and Jamal Crawford (14). In last night s win, he poured in 20 points and a career-high tying eight assists in 28 minutes. Over the last three games, Waiters is averaging 20.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in 33.0 minutes. Tristan Thompson posted his team-leading 23rd double-double of the season (3 rd -most in East) with 16 points on 5-10 (.500) shooting, a game-high 13 rebounds (six offensive) and two steals in 30 minutes in the win over Sacramento. Coming into tonight s contest, Kyrie Irving has topped 20 points in 11 of the last 14 games (since Jan. 15). In the Dec. 23 rd meeting with Detroit, he tallied team highs of 21 points and seven assists in 29 minutes. Irving will start in Sunday s NBA All-Star Game for the Eastern Conference and defend his Three-Point Contest title on Saturday in New Orleans. He hit 3-6 from beyond the arc in last night s victory. Luol Deng posted his fifth 20-point performance as a Cavalier after finishing with a game-high 22 points on 9-17 (.529) shooting, including 4-5 (.800) from deep in 33 minutes against the Kings. Last night, Anthony Bennett recorded his 1 st career double-double with a career-high 19 points on 6-9 (.667) shooting, including 3-3 from the three-point line and a career-high 10 rebounds in 30 minutes. Bennett has scored in double figures in three of the last five games, averaging 10.8 points on.486 (17-35) shooting, including.625 (5-8) from the three-point line and 5.4 rebounds in 21.2 minutes per game over that span. Cleveland s seven overtime games played are the 2 nd -most in the NBA this season (Washington-8). The Cavs are 5-2 in the extra five-minute period, the most overtime wins among all NBA teams and by a Cavs team since 2005-06 (5-0). For the first time in team history, the Cavs played in three straight overtime contests at home (Dec. 26-Jan. 2). (Elias Sports Bureau) 4,000 POINTS & REBOUNDS CLUB: Against the Dallas Mavericks on Jan. 3, Anderson Varejao tallied 10 points and five rebounds to become just the 4th player in Cavs history to surpass 4,000 points and 4,000 rebounds for his career. Varejao also took sole possession of 9th place in franchise history in games played that night as it was his 513th ca reer game with the Cavs. GLASS CONTROL: The Cavs set a Quicken Loans Arena record with 27 offensive rebounds versus the Lakers on Feb. 5. The last time they had that many offensive rebounds in a game was April 7, 1982 against Chicago (27). The last NBA team with at least 27 offensive rebounds wa s Utah on March 30, 2012 (27). Cleveland s 27 offensive rebounds were just two shy of the franchise record of 29 which took f our overtimes to accomplish on Jan. 29, 1980 vs. Lakers. (Elias) 3-POINT BARRAGE: In a 120-118 win over the Lakers on Ja n. 14, the Cavs shot a season -high.765 (13-17) from the three-point line. It marked their highest three-point percentage in a game where they made at least 13 three-pointers in franchise history. The previous best was.619 (13-21) on Nov. 22, 2005 versus the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. The last time the Cavs shot a t least.765 in a single game was Nov. 8, 2000 against the Knicks (.857, 6-7). Miles recorded a season-high 34 points on 11-18 (.611) shooting, including 10-14 (.714) from the three-point line, five rebounds, two assists and two steals in 31 minutes. The 10 made three-point shots is a Cavaliers record in a single game (Previous record: 8, four times). Miles went a perfect 5-5 from the three-point line in the first quarter, which ties the team record for most made three-point shots in a quarter. Miles eight made shots from the three-point line in the first half is also a Cavs record for most three-pointers in a single half (Previous record: 6, four times). He is also one of five players in NBA history who made eight three-pointers in a half (Kobe Bryant-2003, Tracy McGrady-2004, Deron Williams-2013, Chandler Parsons- 2014). (Elias Sports Bureau) ANDY TIES CAVS REBOUND RECORD: In a 87-81 overtime win over Orlando on Jan. 2, Anderson Varejao recorded his seventh double-double on the season with a season-high tying 18 points, a career high 25 rebounds, three assists and one block in 39 minutes. He tied the franchise record for rebounds in a single game that has been held by Rick Roberson since Cleveland s second season in the NBA (March 4, 1972, 25 rebounds in a 130-123 win at HOU). With his 25 rebounds versus the Magic and Tristan Thompson s 21 rebounds on Dec. 4 vs. DEN, the Cavs have two players with 20-plus rebound games in the same season for the first time since 1994-95 (Tyrone Hill 11/20/94 & Michael Cage 3/4/95). HISTORICAL NIGHT: For just the 3 rd time in Cavaliers history, a Cavs player tallied at least 40 points, nine assists and four steals in a single game when Kyrie Irving put up those numbers against Atlanta on Dec. 26. The only other times that feat was accomplished in Cavaliers history were March, 5, 2008 (LeBron James, 50 points, 10 assists, four steals at NYK) and March 13, 1979 (Campy Russell, 41 points, nine assists, four steals vs. PHX). (Elias) IRVING SWATS FOUR SHOTS: In the win over Milwaukee on Dec. 20, Kyrie Irving had 39 points on 13-25 (.520) shooting, six assists and a career-high four blocks in 42 minutes. LIGHTS OUT: In a 109-94 victory over the New York Knicks on Dec. 10 at The Q, Cleveland shot a season-high.568 (42-74) from the field. CLEVELAND CAVALIERS TEAM NOTES (CONTINUED) ANOTHER P.O.W.: On Dec. 16, Kyrie Irving was named as the NBA s Eastern Conference Player of the Week for games played Dec. 9-15. In three games during that week, Irving averaged 29.0 points on.508 (32-63) shooting, including.409 (9-22) from beyond the arc and.933 (14-15) from the foul line, 6.3 assists and 2.3 steals in 34.3 minutes per game. His 29.0 points per game average was the highest among all Eastern Conference guards that week and second-highest among all East players. He posted the highest field goal percentage among all players in the conference who had at least a 21.0 points per game average (minimum three games). He was also one of two players in the East to record multiple 30-point games and the only one to record at least 30 points and 10 assists in a sing le game. Irving won the award for the second time of his career (Jan. 21-27, 2013). JUST LIKE WORLD B. FREE: In the Dec. 10 win over the Knicks, Kyrie Irving posted his third double-double of the season with a game-high 37 points on 14-23 (.609) shooting, including 4-7 (.571) from three-point range, to go a long with a game-high 11 assists, one steal and one turnover in 36 minutes. He became the first Cavs player since World B. Free on March 29, 1986 (43 points, 11 assists, 0 turnovers) to tally at least 37 points and 11 assists, while hav ing one or fewer turnovers in a single game. Before Irving, the last NBA player to accomplish tha t feat was Kobe Bryant on December 29, 2009 (44 points, 11 assists, one turnover versus Golden State). DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE: In an 88-82 win over the L.A. Clippers on Dec. 7, Cleveland held Los Angeles to 28-87 (.322) shooting from the field, a seasonlow by a Cavaliers opponent. The last time Cleveland held an opponent to.322 shooting or less was November 18, 2003 which was also against the L.A. Clippers (.319). Cleveland a lso he ld them to 7-35 (.200) shooting from the three-point line and outrebounded the Clippers 60-45. The 60 rebounds were a season-high for the Cavs and the first time hitting that mark since February 25, 2011 versus New York (62 rebounds). RARE NUMBERS: In a 98-88 win over Denver on Dec. 4, Tristan Thompson, who had 13 rebounds in the first half to tie for the 3 rd most in The Q s history for most rebounds in a single half, finished the night with 17 points, a ca reer-high 21 rebounds and a season-high three blocks. The only other player in Cavalier s history with a game in which he equaled or exceeded Thompson's totals in each of those categories (since the NBA began tracking block ed shots in 1973-74) is Cliff Robinson, who had three such games for Cleveland (two in 1982-83 and one the following season). BLOCK PARTY: Cleveland blocked a season-high 13 shots in a 98-88 win against Denver on Dec. 4, the team s most since March 16, 2004 (13 blocks vs. CHI). The Cavs have also had consecutive 10-plus blocks performances this season (10 blocks versus Philadelphia on Nov. 9 and 11 blocks at Chicago on Nov. 11) for the first time since swatting 10 or more shots in consecutive games on Dec. 5-6, 2008 (10 blocks vs. IND, 10 blocks at CHA, respectively). The Cavs already have five games with at least 10 blocks this season (11/4 vs. MIN, 11/9 vs. PHI, 11/11 at CHI, 12/4 vs. DEN, 12/20 vs. MIL) after only having two such games in 2012-13 (1/4/13 at CHA & 3/6/13 vs. UTA).
