Competitor Information Pack This information pack will cover the basic event set up if you have any questions, please contact one of the triathlon team using the contact details on the last page. The Race The Tresco Triathlon is a sprint triathlon starting at 10.00am on Sunday 30 September 2018. There will be a beach start at the Ruin Beach Café slip for a 0.36 mile swim and onto the transition area. Followed by a 12 mile bike ride, which is both on and off road. 3 x 4 mile laps, back to transition. Then, to finish, a 3 mile road run to Timothy s Corner. Charity Donation We ask that all competitors taking part in the Tresco Triathlon help us to raise funds for the British Red Cross you must raise at least 100. Race Entry Fee There will be a Race Entry Fee of 25 per competitor. This will include your official Tresco Triathlon T-shirt, competitor s medal, refreshments during the event and use of bicycle/helmet (if required). Catering / Refreshments All refreshments during the triathlon will be provided for participants bottled water, sugar sweets and fruit - which will be located around the track. The finish line will be located just before the New Inn at Timothy s Corner where bottled water will be available. For spectators, the New Inn will be open for food and drink. Check In Procedure The triathlon s check in will begin 2 hours before the race starts at the Community Centre (transition area). All competitors must check in a minimum of 1 hour before the race starts. Here, all competitors will check their bikes and make any adjustments where needed; a short health & safety and general rules talk will be made, and all personal belongings including change of attire for bike/run stages can be left at the transition area.
Your race number must be clearly visible on you at all times. During the swim section your right arm must be marked with your race number. During the bike and run stages your race number must be clearly visible on your chest using the available sticker. You will also collect your official race T-shirt at the check in area. There is no requirement to wear this during the event. Please ensure that you arrive in plenty of time. This will give you enough time to familiarize yourself with the bike, collect your race number, rack your bike, get used to the transition area, listen to the race announcements and deposit your personal belongings (such as change of clothes for the different stages). By their nature, triathlons are physically demanding. By participating in this race you are declaring yourself medically fit to complete the course. In the case of known medical conditions or allergies, please ensure that these are listed on the competitor application form or advise us to update your application. Race Information For any queries prior to the race day, please feel free to contact one of the triathlon team (contact details available on last page). Please don t hesitate to ask, especially if this is your first triathlon! Bike Check-in If you are unable to provide your own bike, we shall attempt to provide one for you. Please let us know in plenty of time should you require a bike. All competitors MUST wear a bicycle helmet during the bike stage of the triathlon. You must don and fasten your bicycle helmet BEFORE you touch your bicycle, and not take it off until you have completed the cycle section and re-racked your bicycle. Failure to do so will result in disqualification. It is highly recommended that your bike is serviced before the event. Please note: Fixed wheel bikes are not allowed. By ensuring that you are at the transition area in good time, this will give you enough time to familiarize yourself with the bike and bike racks (including personal belonging crates). The course will be sign-posted where possible, but it is strongly recommended you try and explore the course before the event. Should you wish to visit Tresco prior to the event, we will be happy to provide you with a bike for you to explore the course. Transition Area The Community Centre will be known as the transition area this area is near the school and on the cricket pitch. During the event, only competitors and marshals will be allowed in the transition area.
When racking your bike along with your personal possessions, leave room for other competitors. Marshals may have to move your bike or personal possession crate if not. Competitors only in transition area once the event begins All kit to be stowed in a tidy manner and clear of other bike rack places Bikes must be in a suitable roadworthy condition Please familiarize yourself with the transition area bike racks, run in and run out locations etc. There are toilets available at the Community Centre. Changing Facilities There will be very limited changing facilities available to competitors during the transitions. If you have any questions, please contact one of the triathlon team. General Rules & Race Conduct This race is being run under the same rules as the British Triathlon Federation. These can be viewed in full on the British Triathlon website. These are basic, but necessary for the safety and enjoyment of competitors, spectators and the general public. Here are some of the main points. It is the competitor s responsibility to know and correctly complete the full course of the event. Triathlons are individual endurance events. Any teamwork or outside assistance that provides an advantage over the other competitors is expressly forbidden. Foul/abusive language or behaviour is not permitted nor tolerated! Your race number must be clearly visible during each stage of the triathlon. o SWIM marked on your right arm although you may be asked for your number by a timing marshal during the transition o BIKE displayed on your chest (and ideally your helmet) in clear view for the timing marshals o RUN - displayed on your chest in clear view for the timing marshals Please make every effort to provide your own bike and cycle helmet due to limited numbers available on Tresco. Bikes must be in a safe and roadworthy condition with brakes in good working order. Spot checks will be made to verify this. No fixed wheel bikes allowed. All competitors must ensure that they are adequately clothed at all times. The minimum being a one or two piece, no transparent swim suit. Cycle helmets must be approved by BSI, ANSI, Snell or equivalent standards authorities. Your cycle helmet must be on your head and done up before you touch your bike to take it from the rack. You must not undo it until the bike is re-racked at the end of the bike section. You must make sure your bike is correctly re-racked, if this isn t done correctly, a 5 minute time penalty may be incurred. Further rules can be found on the British Triathlon Federation website. If you have any questions please feel free to ask at check in, or contact the event organisers beforehand.
Swim Section The first stage of the triathlon will be the swim section this will involve all competitors starting simultaneously from the Ruin Beach Café beach. The swim will involve setting off from the beach, into the water and around two clearly marked buoys and then towards Green beach slip. Once here, it is a short way to the bike racks for transition. Total length = 0.36 mile All competitors must be fully aware of the swim course BEFORE they start the event, and a full talk will be given during check in procedure. Please be courteous to fellow competitors try not to swim over the top of other participants! This is a charity event, and any aggressive or unsporting behaviour in the water WILL result in disqualification. On finishing the swim section (once you have swam around the markers and reached the Green beach), you will make your way the short distance to the transition area. This will be approximately 60 metres and will be sign posted please note that you will be covering this distance on a beach / road without footwear. Please show the race number on your arm, or tell them when required, to the marshal as you pass them this is important! Bike Section Race number must be clearly visible on your chest and helmet Bike helmet MUST be securely fastened on your head before you touch your bike to begin the cycle stage. Do not ride your bike inside the transition area Mount your bike only AFTER you leave the transition area as you begin the cycle stage Dismount your bike BEFORE you enter the transition area as you begin the run stage Your bike must be re-racked correctly Bike helmet MUST remain securely fastened on your head until you have racked your bike No mobile phones, ipods, MP3 players etc in transition or while cycling. This will result in disqualification Marshals may prevent competitors from leaving the transition area if helmets are not fastened and race numbers are not correctly displayed on bike and helmet. Note: Please give way to competitors who have already picked up their bike as you un-rack your own. Please be aware that you will be on the same course as the run route, between the transition area and Tresco Abbey please be careful of other competitors. You must complete 3 laps of the cycle course. The course will be signposted, and marshals placed at certain points around the course. Competitors are responsible for ensuring the correct number of laps has been completed.
Bike helmets must be securely fastened on your head at all times whilst you are touching your bike Cycle on the left hand side of any path or road and overtake on the right Drafting is not permitted during the race. You must stay at least 5 metres behind the cyclist in front of you. To overtake pull out onto the right hand side of the track so that you are clear of any drafting benefit Report any medical incidents to event marshals who will take appropriate action Ride within your ability and experience levels PLEASE WATCH FOR OTHER COMPETITORS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC It is your responsibility to count your own laps (there are just three!) Once you have completed your three laps, return into the transition area. You MUST DISMOUNT your bike BEFORE you enter the transition area. Run Section Once you have finished the cycle stage, by re-racking your bike and then removing your helmet, you can begin the 3 mile run section by leaving the transition area through the designated run section exit. Ensure that your race number is still clearly visible on your front. Exit the transition area at the allocated running exit. You will be on the same course as the cycle route between the transition area and Tresco Abbey please be very careful of other competitors. No mobile phones, ipods, MP3 players etc are to be used on the run course. This will result in disqualification PLEASE WATCH FOR OTHER COMPETITORS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC Team Transition Rules As the teams will be racing simultaneously with the single triathletes we have created the following rules to make the transitions as fair as possible. Please read carefully as failure to comply with these simple rules will incur a 2 minute time penalty! Swim and T1 Swimmer - On reaching your transition station you must remove wetsuit (if wearing one), goggles and hat UNAIDED and place in crate and then put trainers on before tagging your bike teammate. Cyclist (must stand behind marker) After being tagged you must pick up your helmet, put it on then un-rack your bike and push it out of the transition area to start your bike section Bike and T2 Cyclist On reaching your transition station you must re-rack your bike, remove your helmet and place in the crate before tagging your run teammate Runner (must stand behind marker) After being tagged you can run out of the transition area to start your run section Early Retirement If for any reason you do not complete the race, please let a marshal know and move to a safe place away from the event route.
Finish The finish line will be at Timothy s Corner (where the New Inn road rejoins the sea-front road). On finishing the run please ensure that the finish line marshal is able to read your race number. The New Inn guest showers and the Community Centre will be available to use for all runners, although there are limited facilities. The competitors crates / belongings will be transported to the New Inn when everyone has completed the bike section. Presentation & Results The presentation of awards will take place at the New Inn as soon as the results have been verified after the last competitor has finished. Hot food will be available after the triathlon as well as live music at the New Inn. Full menu is also available to customers. Trophies: 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd man, 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd lady. 1 st Team. Medals will be available for every finishing competitor. Safety & Insurance There will be medical professionals provided by South West Ambulance Service volunteers available during the course of the event, should any competitor require medical attention. There will be several safety boats in operation during the swim section. A number of marshals will be located throughout the course with radios should you require any attention, any marshal will be able to contact the necessary assistance. Please note that the event organisers do NOT insure competitors during the triathlon under any circumstances. All competitors undertake this event under their own risk, and acknowledge that the event organisers cannot and will not be held responsible for anything that happens during the event.
