COMPETITOR INFORMATION Congratulations on registering for the inaugural Tri Yas! It promises to be a fantastic event on one of the world s premier Grand Prix circuits. In order for all competitors to have a safe and enjoyable race, the following pages contain all the information you require for Tri Yas 2011. Please read through thoroughly and ask a race official if you have any questions. Registration & Bike Racking All participants are required to rack their bike in the transition area prior to 11am on Friday 14th January 2011. Registration and Transition times as follows: Thursday 13th January (evening before event) 6pm - 10pm Friday 14th January (event day) 8am - 11am YOU WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO REGISTER OR RACK YOUR BIKE OUTSIDE OF THESE TIMES. LATE ARRIVAL MAY MEAN YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO ENTER THE RACE. When you arrive please head straight to registration. Please see the Tri Yas 2011 map for the competitor registration location.

RACE PACK COLLECTION At registration you will need to provide photo ID to collect your race pack. In your race pack you will receive: 1.Timing Chip (if you do not own your own chip) If you do not own your own timing chip then you must collect one at registration. The timing chip will be in an envelope with your name and race details stated on the front. Please ensure these are correct. 2. Swim Cap Each wave will have a different colour swim cap to aid identification of swimmers. Some athletes like to wear two swim caps but please ensure the cap you receive is the cap you wear on top so you can be easily recognised during the swim leg of your race. 3. Competitor Wristband Please ensure you take this with you to registration when racking your bike and also wear this at all times on race day as it allows you into transition to rack your bike prior to racing, entitles you to the race day barbeque and enables you to collect your bike at the end of the event. 4. Race Numbers You will receive a sheet of race numbers which must be placed on different parts of your equipment. a) 3 x Bike Numbers: One number must be placed on the seat post of your bike. Two numbers must go on either side of your helmet. The stickers are clearly labelled on the sheet you receive.

b) 2 x Race Numbers: If you have a race belt then please stick the numbers together and attach them to your race belt. Please ensure: During the cycling leg, your number must be displayed on your back. During the run leg, your number must be displayed on your front. If you do not own a race belt then please attach one race number to the front and back of the top you will be wearing for the cycle and run leg of the race. If you are unsure of where to put any of your race numbers then please do not hesitate to ask a member of staff who will be able to assist. IF YOU REGISTER THE DAY BEFORE THE EVENT PLEASE ENSURE YOU BRING YOUR RACE NUMBERS, TIMING CHIP, WRISTBAND AND SWIM CAP WITH YOU ON THE DAY. TRANSITION Racking instructions Once you have collected your registration pack please take your bike to transition where you can set it up ready for your race. You must show your competitor wristband to gain entry into transition. At this time a marshal will check you have a suitable helmet and that your bike is roadworthy including having two functioning brakes and that the bikes handlebars do not have exposed metal ends. The racking position for each wave will be clearly marked along with an individual position clearly marked with your race number. Please rack your bike at the number that you have been allocated. If you are

unsure then please ask a member of staff who will be able to assist. There will be security overnight to secure your bike and any other items that you leave at transition. You may leave any other items such as trainers, running kit but please be aware that transition will close at 11.00am on Friday 14th January 2011 and will not re-open until the last competitor has completed the cycle leg. RACE KIT CHECKLIST For many people this may be your first triathlon and we have provided a list below to help ensure you have everything you need for your first triathlon: Race pack including timing chip, race numbers & competitor wristband Photo ID Swimming costume, trunks or tri-suit Wetsuit (only allowed if water temperature is below 22 degrees celsius) Goggles Roadworthy bike Cycling helmet Shoes for the cycling and running legs Socks Towel Water and sports drinks Sunscreen Sunglasses Hat or visor Race belt (if required) Dry clothes for post race Camera

HOW TO USE YOUR TIMING CHIP PLEASE ENSURE YOU BRING THIS ON RACE DAY AS NO CHIP = NO TIME. Non-Classic ChampionChip Owners: You will be given a white timing chip attached to an ankle strap at registration. Please attach the timing chip to either of your ankles. These will be collected from you at the Finish Line. Classic ChampionChip Owners: If you own a Classic ChampionChip (yellow) which you have registered during your registration process you will receive only an ankle strap on to which you must thread your ChampionChip. Your Classic ChampionChip and ankle strap are yours to keep, please do not return them. Purchased Classic ChampionChip: If you have purchased a Classic ChampionChip you will receive it already threaded onto an ankle strap. Your Classic ChampionChip and ankle strap are yours to keep, please do not return them. IMPORTANT: Your ankle strap must be securely fastened around your ANKLE before you start your race and must not be removed until after you cross the finish line. Please do not wear your timing chip anywhere else. REMEMBER: NO CHIP = NO TIME!

RACE DAY You will now have racked your bike in transition and have all your numbers prepared for the race. There are male and female changing facilities, toilets and water available within competitor registration. Valuables There is a secure area within the competitor registration for competitors to leave valuables. On your race number sheet, there is a number for baggage. If you would like to leave your valuables then please attach this number to the bag. This number will then be written onto your competitor wristband. When collecting your valuables after your race please ensure you do not remove your numbered wristband as this will act as proof of ID for you to collect your belongings. Please note that all valuables are left at the owners risk and the organisers cannot take any responsibility for this.

Step By Step Guide Step 1: 15 minutes prior to your wave start please ensure you are at the competitor registration. Within registration there will be an area clearly marked for your race wave which you must go to. If you are unsure which wave you should stand at, please look at the colour of the wave signs and go to the one which is the same colour as your swim cap. Step 2: 10 minutes prior to the race you will be escorted to the water front where you will be held and given a race briefing. If you have any questions then please do not hesitate to ask as someone else will probably be thinking the same thing! Step 3: The swim director will call you to the start. Step 4: Enter the water and move to the start swim buoys. Wait for the sound to go and you will have started Tri Yas 2011.

Team Instructions All team members must be in the competitor registration area 15 minutes prior to the team s wave/start time for a race briefing. Swim The swimmer must wear the timing chip on their ankle and follow the steps above for the race start. After exiting the swimmer must make their way to transition, where they remove the timing chip and pass it onto the next team member. Bike The cyclist must wait at the racking position with the bicycle until the swimmer arrives. Then the swimmer must handover the timing chip to the cyclist to strap to their ankle. The cyclist must ensure that their number is on the back of their top. They must then secure their helmet and then remove their bike from the rack. Upon completing the cycle section the cyclist must make their way back to their original position in transition, re-rack their bike and THEN remove the chip and hand it over to the runner. Once the chip has been handed over the cyclist may then remove their helmet. Run The runner must wait at the racking position until the cyclist returns and racks the bike. Only when the bicycle is racked can the cyclist remove the chip and hand it over to the runner who must attach the chip to their ankle and THEN begin the run section wearing a body number on the front of their vest/to. GOOD LUCK!

GETTING TO THE VENUE Yas Marina Circuit is easily accessible by road or air from the UAE and internationally. Visitors travelling by road from Abu Dhabi city can reach Yas Marina Circuit in approximately 30 minutes, while Dubai is just under an hour away. For overseas competitors and spectators, Yas Marina Circuit is 15 minutes away from the Abu Dhabi International Airport. The circuit can be accessed via Sheikh Maktoum (E10) highway from Abu Dhabi, the Sheikh Zayed (E11) highway from Dubai or Saadiyat Link.

All competitors and spectators are to enter Yas Marina Circuit through the West Entrance. The West Entrance is located between Ferrari World and the Yas Plaza hotels, along Yas Leisure Drive. TRI YAS MAP/EVENT COURSE EVENT DISTANCES SPRINT DISTANCE OLYMPIC DISTANCE 750 M 1500M 1 lap 2 laps 20 KM 40KM 4 laps 7 laps 5KM 10KM 1 laps 2 laps

RACE DAY RULES & TIPS Swimming Competitors are not permitted to use any swim aids other than a swim cap (which will be provided), goggles, nose clip, costume/ trunks/bathers and a wetsuit should the water temperature permit. The swim will involve a deep water start (meaning you will start in the water not with a dive) so we advise less confident swimmers to remain at the back to give you time and space to find your rhythm during the swim. The water temperature is expected to be around 20 degrees, meaning that the use of a wetsuit is optional. The water temperature will be taken on race day and a decision on the use of wetsuits will be made by the race director. You should be physically capable of completing the required distance. A water safety team will be present in the marina to assist any swimmers who encounter difficulties. If you require assistance stay in a stationary position, turn onto your back and raise your hand. Transition 1 At the end of the swim you will run or walk to the transition where you will have racked your bike earlier. Please be aware of other competitors who may be entering transition with bikes after completing the bike leg of the race. You must have your helmet on and straps fastened before removing your bike from the racking. Do not mount your bike until the mount point which is clearly marked just outside the exit from transition.

For competitors wishing to change from swim clothing to bike and running clothing, there are changing facilities located in transition. These are clearly sign posted and divided into male and female changing although please note there are not any individual lockers. Cycling All bicycles must be well maintained, roadworthy and all handlebars and tri-bars must be plugged. You will not be permitted to compete if your handlebars have exposed metal ends. There must be correctly functioning brakes on each wheel. You do not need a racing style bike (mountain bikes and the like are fine), but fixed-wheel bikes are not permitted. All bikes will be checked before each competitor enters transition. A cycle helmet must be worn at all times you are in motion with the bicycle. You are responsible for counting the number of laps you have completed and entering transition after the requisite number of laps. Pacing/Drafting Competitors are not permitted to draft, (ie take shelter behind or beside another competitor) during the cycling segment of Tri Yas. Warning and penalties will be issued when, in the opinion of the official, competitors are observed to gain an advantage through drafting. Penalties A one minute penalty for Sprint Distance Competitors and a two minute penalty for Olympic Distance Competitors will be added to the competitors overall time. The marshal s decision is final.

Bicycle Draft Zone The draft zone is a rectangle measuring 7m long by 3m wide that surrounds every cycle on the cycle course. The front edge of the front wheel defines the centre of the leading 3m edge of the rectangle. A competitor may enter the draft zone of another competitor, but must be seen to be progressing through that zone. A maximum of 15 seconds is allowed to progress though the draft zone of another competitor. If an overtaking manoeuvre is not completed within 15 seconds, the overtaking cyclist must drop back out of this zone. When a competitor is passed by other competitors, it is his or her responsibility to immediately drop back out of the draft zone of the overtaking competitor. A competitor is passed when the passing cyclist s front wheel is ahead of their own. (See diagram on next page)

Transition 2 At the end of the bike leg you must dismount at the designated position and proceed on foot with your bike through transition to your racking position. You are not permitted to remove your helmet until you have racked your bike. Running No form of movement other than running or walking is permitted on the run course. Competitors may not run without shoes or with a bare torso. Race Withdrawal If at any stage throughout the race you decide to withdraw please inform the next race official you see and make your way back immediately to transition. Once back at transition please return your timing chip to officials at the finish. Please be aware that for safety reasons you may have to wait until the race is finished before you can access your belongings. If you are unwell or require medical assistance the race official will make race organisers aware and inform your next of kin.

General Rules Competitors must exercise sound, mature judgement and follow all reasonable instructions from officials and marshals. Competitors are ultimately responsible for their own safety and for the safety of others. Competitors must take responsibility for knowing the technical and competition rules and abiding by them. It is the competitor s responsibility to be properly prepared for this event and to ensure his or her equipment is suitable and fit for its intended purpose. No competitor shall be permitted to continue racing if, in the opinion of any race official, he or she is physically incapable of continuing without suffering physical damage or endangering other competitors. The use of headphones is not permitted at any stage of the race.

AFTER YOUR RACE Trophies & Prizes Trophies and a great range of prizes will be awarded to the fastest three finishers of each race category. Olympic Distance Male Olympic Distance Female Olympic Distance Teams Sprint Distance Male Sprint Distance Female Sprint Distance Teams Women s Sprint Distance Teams Men s Presentations will take place once all competitors have finished at approximately 18.00. All finishers will receive a Tri Yas Finishers Medal. Water In addition to water points being available on the course, water will be available once you cross the finish line. Medical If you feel unwell at any time during the event please head to a medical facility situated on every leg of the course.

Race Times At the end of the event, you will receive a race card which will inform you of how you can collect your race time breakdown. If you do not own your race chip then please ensure that you place your chip in the allotted location at the end of the race. Race results will also be available on the media centre rooftop area 1 hour after the final finisher in your wave has completed the race. Removal of Equipment Competitors will be able to collect their bikes and equipment from transition after the last cyclist has been through transition. Please ensure that you collect your bikes and all belongings by 9pm on Friday 14th January. The organisers reserve the right to remove any equipment left beyond this time.

YOUR TRIATHLON EXPERIENCE Medical Advice If you have any known medical condition (such as diabetes, asthma, allergy to penicillin, etc.) please ensure you have informed the race organisers prior to the race on your application. Please write all medical details including any medication taken on the back of your race sticker and attach this to your top as well as next of kin and emergency contact details. WHETHER YOU HAVE A MEDICAL CONDITION OR NOT, IF YOU FEEL UNWELL ON RACE DAY - DON T RACE! Mechanical Assistance A free bike service is being provided by Wolfi s Bike Shop for all competitors whom wish to have their bikes serviced prior to the event. This will be available in Pit Garage 5 from 6pm to 10pm on Thursday 13, and 8am to 11am on Friday 14. Hydration and Nutrition It is important to stay well hydrated throughout the race. There will be water stations at regular intervals around the bike and run courses, but we strongly advise you to carry sufficient water on your bike and regularly drink throughout this section of the race. Post race it is also important to replace your lost fluid so please remember to keep your fluid intake up for the following 24 hours. Ensuring you are well hydrated in the days leading up to the event will also aid your raceday hydration. TRI TIP: Stick to what you have been eating during training. Don t do anything new on race-day! Sports drinks and carb gels may be of benefit, but we would not recommend taking them for the first time during the race.

Toilets There will be toilets positioned around the course at easily accessible points. Toilets are located in transition and signed marshal points on the run. In addition there will be toilet facilities in the registration area. Littering Littering during the race is unacceptable and against the law and can result in disqualification. Lost Property Please hand any found items into the Information Tent located in the Tri Yas Village. Please make your way to the Information Desk if you have mislaid anything. Lost property will be held for three weeks post the event. Please contact the organisers if you have lost any items. Accommodation The official hotel partner for Tri Yas is Crowne Plaza, Yas Island. Should you wish to stay for the night either Thursday 13 or Friday 14 January 2011; Crowne Plaza Yas Island offers you a special rate per night starting AED 350+16% including a buffet breakfast for 2 people. Please visit: http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/cp/1/en/cwshome/dprd-8cbe5x/ AUHYI for more information.

Crowne Plaza Pasta Evening For participants who have previously confirmed their attendance, the Crowne Plaza will be hosting a pasta evening on Thursday 13 January from 7pm 9pm. Those attending, please ensure to bring proof of identity. You are welcomed to bring partners, families and friends, however, for non competitors a fee of 100 AED will be applied. Post Event Food & Beverage Following the days racing, please note there will be food & beverage available free of charge (excludes alcoholic beverages) for all competitors (please retain your competitor wrist band as proof of participation). Food & beverage will also be available for spectators to purchase throughout the day. Spectators With competitors arriving from 8am, gates are open for spectators from 9am allowing plenty of time to see the first wave of racing begin at midday. Spectators can enjoy access to the Tri Yas Village and the viewing galleries throughout the day, whilst food & beverage will also be available for purchase. Important Note: Yas Marina Circuit and the Abu Dhabi Media Company will be filming and photographing over the duration of the weekend, including Thursday the 13th and Friday the 14th of January 2011. These images will be used for future promotional purposes.
