YOUTH SPORTS ORIENTATION D. BRADLEY MCWILLIAMS YMCA Sports Staff Matthew Morrow: YouthDevelopment Director PLEASE READ THE COACH CONTRACT WHILE
THANK YOU The YMCA thanks you for volunteering in youth sports! Your involvement will be critical to the success of the program.
YMCA MISSION STATEMENT To put Judeo-Christian values into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all What 2 sports did the YMCA invent?
AREAS OF FOCUS Youth Development Values and skills learned early are vital building blocks for life. Because of the Y more young people are taking a greater interest in learning and making smarter life choices. Children and teens are realizing their potential by learning values and positive behaviors, and exploring their unique talents and interests. That makes for confident kids today and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow. Healthy Living Being healthy means more than simply being physically active; it s maintaining a balanced spirit, mind and body. At the Y you can work toward that balance by challenging yourself to learn a new skill or hobby, fostering connections with friends through our lifelong learning programs, or bringing your loved ones closer together. Social Responsibility We know that when we work as one, we move people and communities forward. We are committed to providing support to our neighbors and opportunities for kids, adults and families to give, join in or advocate in the name of stronger communities.
WHAT DOES YOUTH SPORTS AT THE YMCA MEAN TO YOU?
7 Pillars of YMCA Youth Sports Everyone Plays Everyone who registers is assigned to a team regardless of ability. Make sure everyone receives equal practice and playing time (at least half of every game). Safety First Character Development Positive Competition Family Involvement Sport for All Sport for Fun Make sure the equipment and facilities are safe. Teach the sport in a way where the skills are appropriate for children's developmental level. Use sports to the YMCA's five core values: Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Faith. Be a role model of sporting behavior and guiding your players to do the same. Make decisions that put the best interests of the children before winning the contest. Help children to learn to compete and cooperate in a competitive world. Encourage parents to help as volunteer coaches, officials, timekeepers, and team parents. Encourage the family to be at practices and games to support their child's participation. Encourage and appreciate the diversity of children in our society and encourage the children and their parents to do the same. Make sure that all children are included in every practice, game and team event. Remember the sports are for the kids; let them have fun. Avoid dominating the activity to the point that it destroys children's enjoyment of the sport.
