PROPERTIES AND MAINTENANCE STANDARDS OF BENTGRASSES Use Creeping bentgrass is adapted for use on golf course putting greens, tees, and fairways. This species can be used in any turfgrass situation where mowing is SHORT, such as bowling greens. Fertilization Creeping bentgrass is a species that may require a HIGH LEVEL of maintenance, depending on the variety. In order to obtain a high quality turfgrass, creeping bentgrass will need 4 to 6 pounds of nitrogen ( 1¾ to 2¾ kilograms ) per 1000 square feet per season. Several varieties may furnish good results even if more MODERATE amounts of nitrogen are used, like 3 to 5 pounds of nitrogen ( 1½ to 2¼ kilograms ) per 1000 square feet per season.

Here are some examples of creeping bentgrass varieties that can tolerate MODERATE levels of nitrogen fertilization Alpha Penn A 4 Penneagle II Providence SR 1020 SR 1119 SR 1150 Tyee Seeding Every pound of creeping bentgrass seed will contain approximately 6,000,000 seeds. For the new construction of turf, or for the quick recovery of turf, the recommended SEEDING RATE is 1 to 1½ pounds ( ½ to 1 kilograms ) per 1000 square feet. For over seeding in established turf, it is suggested to use 2 to 3 pounds ( 1 to 1½ kilograms ) per 1000 square feet. Germination and Establishment Under ideal conditions, creeping bentgrass will provide an average GERMI- NATION RATE of 3 to 5 days. From 6 to 10 days, if temperatures are cool.

The first mowing will probably be necessary in 21 days after seeding, depending upon the type and location of turf. On average, the first limited use of a freshly seeded area can be expected after six to eight weeks. Mowing Almost all varieties of creeping bentgrass will PREFER a mowing height of 0.188 to 0.500 inch ( 4¾ to 12½ millimetres ). Several varieties will TOLERATE 0.100 to 0.150 inch ( 2½ to 4 millimetres ).
