Ashley Ravelli accounts for 17 treys to lead the team. Randi Jackson is the only American on the roster to hit a trey this season. TRACKING OFFENSIVE FLOW The new officiating guidelines designed to create more offensive flow have resulted in an average of 39.1 fouls per game, stopping flow over nine times more per game than last season. Through seven games, there have been an average of 39.1 fouls and 42.4 free throws per game. The Colonials games in 2012-13 averaged 29.9 fouls and 30.8 free throws per game. THE LAST TIME TIMES TWO Two things happened against Coppin State that hadn t happened in a long time RMU went over the 80-points and five players reached double-digits in scoring. 80 points - March 3, 2012 vs. Saint Francis, 92 pts 5 Double-Digits - March 6, 2010 vs. Wagner PRESEASON PRIZEWINNER With the NEC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year returning, the RMU women s basketball team is the favorite in the 2013-14 NEC Preseason Women s Basketball Coaches Poll. The Colonials received five of a possible nine first-place votes and are the favorite for the first time since the 2008-09 season and third time overall. FIRST ALL-AMERICAN After leading the nation in rebounding and the league in scoring, senior forward Artemis Spanou earned a spot on WHO WAS ROBERT MORRIS? the NetScouts.com All-America Third Team in 2012-13. She is the first RMU player to earn such an honor. Spanou was also the NEC Player of the Year. RAVELLI ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Sophomore Ashley Ravelli was named the 2012-13 NEC Rookie of the Year. Ravelli finished fourth in the league with 70 three pointers last season while averaging nearly 11 points per game. SIX IN A ROW AT SEWALL The Colonials open the 2013 14 season with six consecutive home games, the longest home stand in team history. Robert Morris played five straight home games late in teh 1992-93 season, sandwiching a late season nonconference tilt in between a pair of league games. SPANOU JOINS ELITE 1,000-500-200-100 CLUB Senior forward Artemis Spanou became the third player in RMU history and 17th in NEC history to reach 1,000 career points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists and 100 steals. The two RMU players to accomplish the feat are Betsy Puskar (1982-86, 1,035 pts., 632 reb., 254 asts., 206 steals) and Chinata Nesbit (2006-08, 1,083 pts., 620 reb., 245 asts., 124 stls.). PERENNIAL PLAYOFF POTENTIAL Robert Morris missed the playoffs for the first time since 2004-05 last season, falling shy by one game. RMU had eight consecutive playoff appearances from 2004-05 through 2011-12. RMU finished first in three of those seasons, earning the tournament s top seed in 2010. CHUCK S CHARMS The Charles L. Sewall Center, a.k.a. The Chuck, has lent a certain advantage for the Colonials over the past nine seasons. Since 2004-05, RobertMorris is 99-28 in home games, including an even more impressive 65-15 winning percentage in home NEC games. INTERNATIONAL LOVE The Robert Morris roster once again features members from all over the world. On a team of 12 players, seven hail from outside the borders of the United States while five call America home. Of the five Americans, all come from different states with Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, California and Virginia represented. Two players hail from Greece, two from Spain, and one each from France, Italy and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Financier of the American Revolution. He isn t as famous as his friend George Washington, but without Robert Morris, the American colonies bold attempt to throw off British rule never could have succeeded. Born in 1734 in Liverpool, England, Robert Morris sailed to the United States with his father when he was 14 years old. Morris became a partner at the import export firm of Willing & Morris where he made his millions. After, he became the spokesman for opposition to the Stamp Act, smuggled arms for the new American army and navy, signed the Declaration of Independence, secured financing often using his personal credit to fight the Revolutionary War and served as a Pennsylvania state senator. He died in Philadelphia on May 8, 1806. 2013-14 COLONIAL TRENDS At home 3-4 On the road 0-1 Neutral Site 0-0 Overtime 0-0 Home Northeast Conference 0-0 Away Northeast Conference 0-0 Following a win 2-1 Following a loss 1-3 Playing teams w/ winning record 2-1 Playing teams w/ losing record 1-3 Playing teams w/.500 record 0-1 Games decided by 1 point 0-0 Games decided by 2-5 points 0-1 Games decided by 6-9 points 0-3 Games decided by 10 points or more 3-1 Leading at the half 3-2 Trailing at the half 0-3 Tied at the half 0-0 Outshooting opponent (by pct.) 2-2 Outshot by opponent (by pct.) 1-3 Tied in shooting w/ opponent (by pct.) 0-0 Team shoots below 39.9% 1-4 Team shoots 40% to 49.9% 1-1 Team shoots 50% or above 1-0 RMU makes 0-4 three-pointers 1-1 RMU makes 5 to 9 three-pointers 2-3 RMU makes 10+ three-pointers 0-1 Outrebounding opponent 3-5 Outrebounded by opponent 0-0 equal 0-0 Win turnover margin 1-1 Lose turnover margin 2-4 Turnovers equal 0-0 An RMU player scores 20+ 1-0 An RMU player scores 30+ 1-0 An RMU player has 10+ rebounds 3-5 An RMU player has 7+ assists 0-1 An RMU player has 5+ steals 1-0 Scoring 80 or more points 1-0 Scoring 70-79 points 0-1 Scoring 60-69 points 1-3 Scoring 50-59 points 1-1 Scoring under 50 points 0-0 Allowing under 50 points 2-0 Allowing 50-59 points 0-0 Allowing 60-69 points 1-3 Allowing 70-79 points 0-1 Allowing 80 or more points 0-1 Playing in November 3-3 Playing in December 0-2 Playing in January 0-0 Playing in February 0-0 Playing in March 0-0 Playing Monday 0-0 Playing Tuesday 1-0 Playing Wednesday 0-0 Playing Thursday 0-0 Playing Friday 0-2 Playing Saturday 1-3 Playing Sunday 1-0 Playing Day Games 3-4 Playing Night Games (6 p.m. or later) 0-1

The Colonials received five of a possible nine first-place votes and are the favorite for the first time since the 2008-09 season and third time overall. Sophomore guard Artemis Spanou, the reigning NEC Player of the Year, was a unanimous pick for the Preseason All-NEC Team. Spanou led the nation in rebounding as a junior, scooping up 15.6 rebounds per game. The Greek goddess of double-doubles also led the league in scoring at 19.1 points per game. The junior has eclipsed the 1,000 point and 1,000 rebound mark. Spanou is one of four starters returning to the RMU roster this season. One of those starters in 2012-13 NEC Rookie of the Year Ashley Ravelli. Ravelli finished fourth in the league with 70 three pointers last season while averaging nearly 11 points per game. Along with sophomore Lou Mataly, the Colonials have two threepoint threats returning. Mataly was limited to 19 games last season, but still managed to make her mark as rookie averaging 10.1 points and shot nearly 40 percent from long range. Guard Kelly Hartwell is back for her senior season after earning a starting spot and averaging 7.8 points and 4.3 points as a slashing guard last season. Five freshmen add depth to the squad along with the returns of senior Britta Emberg, redshirt-junior Jolie Olingende and sophomore guard Randi Jackson. 2012-13 NEC Preseason Coaches Poll 1. SAL BUSCAGLIA Head Coach 11th season at RMU 36th season overall Canisius 1976 Robert Morris University women s basketball coach Sal Buscaglia, now in his 11th season at RMU, began the renaissance of Colonials basketball with his arrival in 2003-04. Since he has taken over, the women s basketball program has played in five national tournaments, won two Northeast Conference championships and earned playoff berths in nine seasons. Not only has Coach Sal, as he is respectfully called, turned the program into a perennial NEC power, but a nationally competitive program. The turnaround could not have been more dramatic. His first squad, in 2003-04, posted a 3-24 record.given a year to recruit and rebuild, his 2004-05 squad posted a 20-10 record marking the third-largest turnaround in NCAA history and giving RMU its first 20-win season since the 1983-84 season. Perhaps the biggest piece in the resurgence of the program came to the forefront that season in the form of Sugeiry Monsac. It also earned Buscaglia the Brenda Reilly NEC Coach of the Year award, his first of two such honors during his tenure at RMU. Monsac was a highly-touted recruit sought out by numerous BCS level programs, but when she committed to Coach Sal and RMU, it marked a turnaround. Monsac was named the NEC Player of the Year in 2004-05 and was a two-time All-NEC selection who would score 1,177 points and grab 689 rebounds in just 67 career games. After a 20-9 season and a trip to the league semifinals in 2005-06, 2006-07 marked the complete revival of the program. Going 21-8 in the regular season and sharing the NEC title with a 15-3 record, RMU earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in team history after a victory in the Northeast Conference Championship in 2007. That squad finished with a programrecord 24 victories overall winning three tournament games including a thrilling championship over Sacred Heart, 68-66. One year later, Buscaglia and his Colonials repeated the feat. This time around, the squad was led by record-setting threepoint shooting of Sade Logan and the first triple-doubles in team history by NEC Tournament MVP Chinata Nesbit. Coach Sal and his staff put in a dribble-drive motion offense one of just two teams in women s basketball running the offense to take advantage of the team s athletically-gifted guards. Logan would tie the NCAA record with 126 three-pointers that season and RMU posted a 23-10 record. A 16-2 NEC record the squad its second straight regular season title prior to defeating LIU Brooklyn, 86-75 in the tournament title tilt. After a 13-18 mark in an injury-marred 2008-09 season, the 2009-10 squad bounced back by setting team records for regular season wins (22) and conference victories (17) while leading the team to its first outright NEC Regular Season Championship and an eventual Postseason WNIT Tournament. The appearance marked the fourth consecutive season RMU played in a national tournament. Angela Pace was the feature player on that team becoming the first player in league history to earn both Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Current senior Artemis Spanou made her mark in 2010-11 when she became the first Robert Morris player to earn NEC Rookie of the Year honors. Spanou and her teammates posted a 16-14 mark and led the squad back to the NEC semifinals. A year later, the Colonials went 18-14 overall and 11-6 in league games, returning for the eighth time in the last nine seasons to the Northeast Conference semifinals. The team s regular season record earned them the top seed in the Women s Basketball Invitational, the fifth national tournament appearance in six seasons. The injury bug reared its head again in 2012-13, but a new look RMU squad took some impressive individual honors. Spanou led the nation in rebounding and the conference in scoring to earn NEC Player of the Year honors, the fourth Colonial under the watch of Coach Sal to be named the league s top player. Ashley Ravelli, a three-point specialist, was named the Rookie of the Year joining Spanou as the only two players in program history to earn the moniker. In 35 seasons, Buscaglia has put together 11 national tournament runs and has finished with a winning record in 30 of those seasons. He has collected over 650 career victories, 401 of those coming on the Division I level, while posting an overall winning percentage of.665. Before Robert Morris, Buscaglia spent five seasons at Manhattan College (1998-2003). In just his second season at Manhattan, Buscaglia led the Lady Jaspers to a 17-win season, marking the fifth most victories in school history, and was recognized as the 24th most improved team in NCAA Division I. In five seasons at Manhattan, Buscaglia compiled a record of 79-65, including a 20-10 record and NCAA Division I tournament appearance in 2002-03. Buscaglia s Manhattan team received votes in the Top 25 in 2002-03 as the Jaspers claimed the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships. The MAAC championship in 2003 was the first league title in school history. Manhattan s 20-10 overall record was also the best in school history. In 2001-02 he guided the jaspers to an 18-10 overall record and was named the Co-Coach of the Year in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. For eight seasons prior to his arrival at Manhattan, Buscaglia was head coach of the University at Buffalo from 1990-98 and led the Bulls to five 20-win campaigns. In its first season in Division I competition in 1991-92, Buffalo finished with a 23-6 record, which was the 10th highest winning percentage (.793) in Division I that season. The Bulls won East Coast Conference regular season titles in 1992, 1993 and 1994, as well as tournament championships in 1992 and 1994. In 1994-95, Buffalo moved to the Mid-Continent Conference and Buscaglia led the Bulls to a share of the Mid-Con regularseason title in 1995 and an appearance in the conference tournament finals in 1997. In each of Buffalo s first three seasons in the Mid-Con, Buscaglia led the Bulls to at least 20 wins. For his efforts at Buffalo, Buscaglia earned New York State Coach of the Year honors in 1992 and 1996. Buscaglia started his coaching career at Hilbert Junior College, in Hamburg, New York, where in 12 seasons from 1977-90 he amassed a record of 249-62. During his tenure at Hilbert, his teams collected 93 straight league wins, eight straight Region Tournament Championships (1982-90), eight straight regular season conference championships (1982-90) and eight straight National Tournament appearances (1982-90). In 1988-89 his team finished in the elite eight. Coach Sal is a member of the Hilbert College Hall of Fame. A native of Buffalo, New York, Buscaglia is a 1976 graduate of Canisius with a Bachelor of Science Degree in business and accounting and in 1989 earned a Master s Degree in physical education, also from Canisius. In 1980, Buscaglia received a Master s Degree in business education from the State University of New York College at Buffalo. Buscaglia, a proud father and grandfather, has a son Charlie, who is an assistant with the Colonials, and a daughter, Deanna. Deanna resides in Elma, N.Y. with her husband Mark and their children Paityn (12), Shane (10) and Eva (7).
