Mineral Point Penguins Swim Team Practice Practices are held Monday through Friday at 11:00am until Noon for ages 11 and over and Noon until 12:45 for ages 10 and under. There will be NO practice on the days of meets. We would like to stress that swim team is not a replacement for swim lessons. Please consider having your child take lessons to improve the quality of their stroke, which will, in turn, improve their times at the swim meets. In addition, the more practices swimmers attend the more prepared they will be and the better they will perform. Attendance Children are encouraged to try to attend as many practices as they can; however, this is not required. We understand that summer is a busy time and that many families will be going on vacation. It is also not mandatory to attend the swim meets. The coach will typically send out an email a few days prior to each meet asking who will be attending and what strokes they prefer to swim. Please sign up through these emails so the coaches know who to expect. The coaches will also use this information to make the relay teams. Team Uniforms and Pictures Team apparel and swimsuits will be available to order in May. This year we are again ordering through Simply Swimming and will be able to order online. We also will have team swim caps available for order. The deadline is earlier this year so that we can have the items as the season begins. The swimmers will ideally have their suits prior to the first meet. Once again, team suits are not required but we encourage girls to wear a one-piece swimsuit to both practices and meets. Swim Meets At the meets each swimmer may swim up to three individual events and two relays. The coaches try very hard to make sure that all the swimmers get a chance to swim on a relay team. At each meet, the swimmers or their parents will receive event cards similar to the one below.

Prior to the start of a meet you or your child should pick up their event cards from the front desk of the swimming pool starting at 4:30pm (for home meets) or from the coaches (away meets). It is important to pick them up early so that the coaches know your child is at the meet. Relay cards will not be available when the individual cards are being passed out, this is because they may need to make last minute changes. There will be three calls for an event: first call, second call, and final call. When a swimmer s event is called he/she should report to the bullpen, preferably on the first call. In the bullpen, someone will assign the swimmer a lane to swim in. The swimmers will then eventually proceed to the starting blocks and race. We strongly encourage that parents cheer on their swimmer; we just ask that parents remember that in order for the meets to run smoothly, fans need to stay out of the way of the meet workers, especially the timers, runners, and the bullpen workers. This is especially important at the Invitational and Conference meets. At the end of this letter is a listing of the order of events to help you keep track of when your child will be competing. If you, as a parent, are driving and have extra room in your vehicle to transport other swimmers whose parents are unable to attend the meet, please be sure to let others know. If you are unable to make the meet and need a ride for your child, let the coaches know beforehand and they will try to help find a spot for them. No one under the age of 18 will be allowed to transport swim team members unless they are their siblings. The coaches are also not able to transport any swim team members unless a sibling. Conference We are part of a conference consisting of six teams around the area. These teams include Boscobel, Dodgeville, Lancaster, Mineral Point, Prairie du Chien, and Richland Center. We swim several dual and triangular meets, as denoted on the schedule, against these teams. There is always an invitational meet and a conference meet with all of the teams present.

Costs & Volunteering The fee for the swim team will be $20/swimmer with a $40 maximum per family. This is in addition to the requirement of purchasing a pool pass either as an individual or as part of a family pass. We need all parents to volunteer at the home meets so that they can run smoothly. There are several different positions available to help including working in the concession stand, timing, running time cards, entering times into Meet Manager, and labeling ribbons. We need everyone to help to make the meets run fast and smooth. Email sign-ups will be sent prior to each meet. All you have to do is reply as to what position and time you would like to work 1 st reply, 1 st serve. As with the meets, parent participation is necessary to keep our swim team costs low. We encourage all parents to volunteer so that the same parents do not end up working every event.

Swim Meet Volunteer Positions CARD DISTRIBUTION: The person will arrive before warm-ups start and will be at front desk of the pool and will hand out the cards to the swimmers and/or their parents. They will also keep track of who picks up cards so that the coaches can make up relay cards. STARTER: The starter will start each race with a whistle. The stroke judge will need to be WSI certified and will watch each swimmer's stroke to verify they are in compliance with the rules. This would include a two handed touch for breaststroke and butterfly. The judge has the authority to disqualify racers during the event. RELAY HELPER: This person helps get the mass of kids that are in the relays from the bullpen to the starting blocks. You would work at the beginning and at the end of the meet RUNNER: This person collects the completed time cards at the end of a race (you hold all the cards from individual heats until the event is complete). You then sort these in alphabetical order by swimmer's last name and turn them into the scores in the office. ANNOUNCER This person is at the microphone and will announce when each event is seeding in the bullpen. There are 3 calls. This person will also do announcements throughout the meet such as team scores, concession stand news and missing kids. BULL PEN This person is responsible for organizing the kids when they respond to the call for their events. Each child will have a card and they will turn that in. You will assign heats and lanes. TIMERS These people time the race. They start when the whistle blows and end when the swimmer touches the wall. Then you will write the time on the time card. The runner will collect these cards. This is the official time for each swimmer. RIBBONS These people will take the stickers that the scorer table supplies and put them on the appropriate ribbon. Then the ribbons will be put in the correct team's box. SCORERS These people take the time cards that the runners deliver and enter them into the computer using a Swim Meet Program. They then print out the event results and ribbon stickers. CONCESSION STAND These people work in the concession stand organizing, refilling and selling food to our hungry swimmers. This effort accounts for more than 1/2 of our funding needed so it is extremely important that we be fully staffed. CLEAN UP: We need people at the end of the meet to help put everything away. If you are able, please stay to help.
