SJSU trailed 41-28 at halftime and 63-54 with 7:13 left in the second half. The comeback was fueled by career scoring highs for Isaac Thornton (17) and Brandon Mitchell (12). All of their points came in the second half, and Brandon Clarke added 22 points and 13 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the year. MITCHELL AND THORNTON FUEL COME BACK Isaac Thornton and Brandon Mitchell combined for 29 points after halftime and provided the spark SJSU needed to comeback and beat Air Force. Both players converted traditional three-point plays down the stretch of the second half, and Mitchell drained the biggest 3-pointer of his career in overtime. The Falcons made consecutive baskets to start overtime while the Spartans missed their first four shots. Right when it looked like SJSU was out of it, Mitchell banged the three to make it 74-73 Air Force lead. Thornton came up with a steal on the next Air Force possession, leading to a Brandon Clarke dunk which gave the Spartans the lead for good. CLARKE BOUNCES BACK Brandon Clarke began last week with a rare performance than included a season-low four points on just 2-for-8 shooting in a loss to Fresno State. But three days later the Mountain West s most efficient shooter returned to form, nailing 9-of-12 from the field for a team-high 22 points. He also grabbed 13 rebounds to notch his eighth double-double of the year. It was the eighth 20-point game for Clarke during Mountain West play which ties for the league lead with New Mexico s Elijah Brown and Colorado State s Gian Clavell. SPARTANS GOING FOR 15TH WIN San José State is going for a 15th regular season win, something the program has accomplished just three times in the last 23 years. The 2010-11 Spartans were the most recent group to win 15 regular season games, and they advanced to the semifinal round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament and later the College Basketball Invitational (CBI). MOST CONFERENCE WINS SINCE 95-96 San José State s comeback victory over Air Force was the seventh Mountain West win of the year. It gives SJSU the most conference wins since the 1995-96 season when the team went 9-9 in Big West play. That same team went on to win the Big West Tournament and make SJSU s one and only NCAA Tournament appearance. SERIES HISTORY WITH UTAH STATE San José State has beaten Utah State just once in the last 11 years, and a win on Wednesday would snap an 18-game losing streak to the Aggies. The last Spartan win came at home on February 18, 2008 by a score of 70-67. Utah State owns a commanding 57-21 advantage in the all-time series which dates back to December of 1935. The ninepoint loss was the closest contested game between the programs since a 66-60 win for the Aggies in 2013. The teams met again in late February and the Spartans lost that one on the road 88-70. Cody Schwartz who infamously played the first half of last year s game in Logan, averaged 12.0 points over the two meetings last season. CLARKE EARNS THIRD PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR After leading San José State to a pair of wins and extending the team s winning streak to four games, Brandon Clarke was named Mountain West Player of the Week (Feb. 6-12) for the third time this year. He averaged 17.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks in wins over San Diego State (2/7) and UNLV (2/11). He scored a game-high 22 points as the Spartans beat the Aztecs for the first time since 1999, and closed the week with 13 points, seven rebounds and five blocks in the 76-74 win at UNLV. Clarke is the first player to win the award three times this season and he s the second Spartan to be a threetime player of the week honoree joining Ricky Berry who did it in 1986-87. BROWN NAILS GAME WINNER AT UNLV Freshman point guard Terrell Brown hit a contested leaner in front of the hoop with 13.1 seconds remaining at UNLV which would go on to be the game-winning basket. Brown dribbled out the Spartans last possession before slicing down the left side of the key with 16 seconds on the game clock and six on the shot clock. His shot lifted San José State to its fourth straight win, a streak which began with a win over the Runnin Rebels in San Jose on Jan. 28. It is the first time since the 1993-94 season that the Spartans have completed a season sweep of UNLV. THE EMERGENCE OF TERRELL BROWN After averaging 15.3 minutes over 12 games as a reserve, Terrell Brown has jumped into the starting lineup and the freshman has averaged 36.5 minutes over the last five contests. He is the third-leading scorer on the team during that stretch, and scored the biggest two points of his young career with 13.1 seconds left at UNLV which lifted SJSU to a fourth straight win. The freshman has yet to find a match for his speed to the rim since taking over and has used good passing as a weapon too. Field Goal Percentage G FGM FGA Pct. 1. Brandon Clarke-SJ 14 124 198.626 2. His 3-pointer in overtime stopped the bleeding after Air Force made the first two shots and SJSU missed its first four... His hit from long range changed the momentum and helped SJSU get the win. #15 BRANDON CLARKE, F Scored a team-high 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds... It was his eighth double-double of the year and he had a career-high six assists to go along with it. SJSU COMES BACK TO BEAT AIR FORCE San Jose, Calif. --- Isaac Thornton matched his career scoring high with 17 points, all after halftime, and San José State overcame a 13-point deficit for an 83-78 overtime win against Air Force in Mountain West play. The comeback win was the Spartans fourth time this season overcoming a deficit of 10 or more points and their first overtime win since defeating UC Davis, 89-85 in triple overtime on December 18, 2013. Like Thornton, Spartan forward Brandon Mitchell had been held scoreless in the first 20 minutes, but matched his career scoring high after the break with 12 points. His 3-pointer with 2:07 left in overtime made it 74-73 Falcons lead, and gave the Spartans new life after surrendering consecutive baskets and missing the first four attempts to begin the period. On the ensuing Air Force possession Thornton, who is second all-time at SJSU in steals, grabbed a loose ball off the floor and hit a cutting Brandon Clarke for the jam which put SJSU ahead for good, 75-74, with 1:24 left in overtime. Thornton and SJSU s late-game free throw expert Jaycee Hillsman both knocked down 4-of-4 attempts from the line in the final 26 seconds to secure the win for San José State. The overtime period was a microcosm of the game itself, with Air Force (10-17, 3-11 MW) jumping out to a four-point lead only to have it stolen right back by San José State (14-11, 7-7 MW). Ryan Welage hit the game s first shot, but from there, Air Force went on a 10-2 run and wouldn t relinquish the lead until 3:16 left in regulation. A nine-point Falcons lead with 7:13 to play in the second half would vanish over the next 3:57. Thornton nailed a three and then got three points the hard way with the bucket and the foul with 5:03 remaining to make it 65-62. Then Cody Schwartz s 3-ball made it a one-point Air Force lead, and it was Mitchell s and-1 layup with 3:14 to go that put SJSU back in front, 70-68, for the first time since 2-0. It ended up being the Spartans last basket of regulation and Air Force s Trevor Lyons hit a fast-break layup to tie the game 70-70 with 2:33 left. Both teams went scoreless the rest of the way. Jalen James had space for a potential game-winning jumper from the top of the nail with five seconds remaining, but it went off front iron. Brandon Clarke hit 9-of-12 from the field to lead San José State with 22 points, and grabbed 13 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the year. Clarke added a career-high six assists, two of which came on the afore mentioned and-1 baskets for Mitchell and Thornton. Welage finished with 10 points rounding out SJSU s four double-figure scorers. San José State had one of its best free throw shooting games of the season converting 20-of-23. The Spartans were 8-for-8 in the overtime, all in the last 26.0 seconds, 11-for-11 since the 10:00 mark of the second half. San José State seeks to make it two in a row and six out of seven Wednesday, February 22 against Utah State in a 7:00 p.m. home game in The Event Center. SJSU DROPS MW OPENER TO UTAH STATE San Jose, Calif. --- Frank Rogers notched his sixth double-double of the season with 23 points and 11 rebounds, but Utah State posted an 80-71 victory in the Mountain West opener for both teams at The Event Center. The two teams went shot for shot throughout the first 14 minutes of the first half. Princeton Onwas slam dunk at the 6:41 mark made it a two-point game, 23-21 Utah State lead. The Aggies leading scorer Jalen Moore answered with a three, and Darius Perkins hit a jumper to extend the lead to seven. The lead grew to as many as 16 points, before San José State (5-8, 0-1 MW) kicked it into gear and went on an 11-2 run. Ryan Welage s three-ball at the 14:40 mark in the second half made it 49-45. But it was deja vu for the Spartans as Perkins and Moore both connected again on back-to-back threes. The buckets were the beginning of a 14-2 Utah State (9-3, 1-0 MW) run, during which SJSU was scoreless for 4:36. Moore recorded a season-high with 21 points leading the Aggies to their fourth straight win and 17th consecutive over San José State. Grayson Moore with 12 and Perkins and Julion Pearre were in double-figure scoring with 11 each. Utah State s bench, paced by Pearre and Moore, outscored the San José State reserves, 29-13. It was the third time this season Rogers finished with 20 or more points for the Spartans. Cody Schwartz with 13 points and Ryan Welage with 11 points joined Rogers in double-figures scoring. Schwartz came in shooting better than 50 percent from beyond the arc in the last three games, but was just 2 for 8 from deep Wednesday night. Logan, Utah --- A poor finish to the end of the first half on the road at Utah State continued into the second period and the San José State men s basketball team was flattened 88-70 by Utah State on Saturday night. We couldn t get in a rhythm and that was partly them, said Spartans head coach Dave Wojcik. I just thought we got paralyzed when they made the run. That s when you have to buckle down and become even more disciplined, and we just didn t have that tonight. The Spartans (8-20, 3-13 MW) ended the first half on a 4:08 scoring drought. They followed that by making just one shot in the first 8:02 of the second period. Put it all together, and it added up to a 21-5 run for Utah State (14-13, 6-10 MW). A free throw by Shane Rector at the 8:36 mark in the second half gave the Aggies a 31-point lead, their largest of the game. While the Spartans struggled to get shots to drop in the second period, Utah State seemingly scored at will, especially from downtown where it finished 58.8 percent (10-17). The Aggies shot 55.1 percent (27-49) for the game, while SJSU shot 39.7 percent (23-58). San José State took a 31-29 lead with 6:28 left in the first period when senior big-man Ivo Basor stepped out for a three that barely moved the net. But it wouldn t last for long as Darius Perkins answered with a three of his own on the next possession, which gave USU the lead for good. We hung in tough early and then lost our focus and discipline, Wojcik said. We didn t tag rolls, gave up easy layups, miscommunication led to open threes and they really hurt us in transition. Utah State s Chris Smith led all scorers with 20 points. Quinn Taylor with 16, Perkins with 12, and Jalen Moore with 11 were also in double-figures scoring. Cody Schwartz led the Spartans with 11 points. Frank Rogers and Princeton Onwas joined Schwartz in double-figure scoring with 10 points each. DAVE WOJCIK HEAD COACH FOURTH SEASON LOYOLA UNIVERSITY, MARYLAND, 1991 Dave Wojcik (WOE-jick) enters his fourth season as San José State University s head men s basketball coach in 2016-17. He joined the Spartans in March of 2013 after six conference championships and 11 postseason appearances as an assistant coach. The 2015-16 season, Wojcik s third at SJSU, was a turning point for the program. The team achieved its highest production in points, rebounds, blocks and steals since Wojcik s arrival. The squad s 449 assists were third-most in a single season, and the highest total since 1984-85. Production on offense jumped up 16.8 points per game from the year before, leading to a 6.5-game turnaround which ranked 48th in the nation. The Spartans defeated three teams which won 20 or more games and reached the NCAA Tournament the previous season. One of the three was a signature 68-63 win on Senior Night against Boise State, where Wojcik was an assistant for three years before becoming a Spartan. Fueling the surge was a group of four true freshmen that ended the season accounting for 43.4 percent of the team s points ranking second only to Kentucky among Division I teams. Under Wojcik s guidance, forward Brandon Clarke became the first freshman at SJSU and in the Mountain West to win the Sixth Man of the Year award. The balanced recruiting class also featured the Mountain West s top two three-point shot makers in Cody Schwartz and Ryan Welage. San José State didn t only see a production increase on the court in 2015-16. Wojcik s emphasis on academic success has helped the team raise its grade point average one full point in the last year. The Spartans earned a pair of Academic All-Mountain West awards, and Jalen James was named an Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar. The 2013 Broncos received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and recorded a second 20-win season in three years. Wojcik has an extensive resume as an assistant coach at building successful basketball programs. He started his coaching career in 1991-92 under Lefty Driesell at James Madison University. Coach Driesell amassed 786 wins over his coaching career and was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007. Wojcik then was hired the next season as an assistant at West Liberty State College. Wojcik returned to his alma mater in 1993 as an assistant to the former Wake Forest head coach, the late Skip Prosser. Wojcik helped coach the Greyhounds to one of the top-15 turnarounds in NCAA Division I history at the time, the 1994 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament title and Loyola s first NCAA Tournament appearance in its 105-year men s basketball history. Wojcik followed Prosser to Xavier where the duo reached the NCAA Tournament twice in three years. Wojcik coached at the U.S. Naval Academy (2004) and Dayton (2005) before spending the next four seasons (2006-09) as the associate head coach at the University of Tulsa, working on the staff of his brother Doug Wojcik. The Golden Hurricane recorded an 81-53 overall record during that time, including three consecutive 20-win seasons. The team played in back-to-back Conference USA Tournament title games, won the inaugural College Basketball Invitational championship in 2008 and reached the second round of the 2009 NIT. Wojcik also was successful as a collegiate player at Loyola. He is the only player in school history to record a triple-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists against St. Francis (Pa.) in 1989. Wojcik earned his bachelor s degree in education from Loyola in 1991. He and his wife, Heather, have one son, Jake. Connect: @SJSUAthletics @SJSUMBB facebook.com/sjsuspartans www.sjsuspartans.com 19
