PURPOSE AND USE OF PROCESS INDUSTRY PRACTICES In an effort to minimize the cost of process industry facilities, this Practice has been prepared from the technical requirements in the existing standards of major industrial users, contractors, or standards organizations. By harmonizing these technical requirements into a single set of Practices, administrative, application, and engineering costs to both the purchaser and the manufacturer should be reduced. While this Practice is expected to incorporate the majority of requirements of most users, individual applications may involve requirements that will be appended to and take precedence over this Practice. Determinations concerning fitness for purpose and particular matters or application of the Practice to particular project or engineering situations should not be made solely on information contained in these materials. The use of trade names from time to time should not be viewed as an expression of preference but rather recognized as normal usage in the trade. Other brands having the same specifications are equally correct and may be substituted for those named. All Practices or guidelines are intended to be consistent with applicable laws and regulations including OSHA requirements. To the extent these Practices or guidelines should conflict with OSHA or other applicable laws or regulations, such laws or regulations must be followed. Consult an appropriate professional before applying or acting on any material contained in or suggested by the Practice. This Practice is subject to revision at any time. PIP Member Companies and Subscribers may copy this Practice for their internal use. Changes or modifications of any kind are not permitted within any PIP Practice without the express written authorization of PIP. Authorized Users may attach addenda or overlays to clearly indicate modifications or exceptions to specific sections of PIP Practices. Authorized Users may provide their clients, suppliers and contractors with copies of the Practice solely for Authorized Users purposes. These purposes include but are not limited to the procurement process (e.g., as attachments to requests for quotation/ purchase orders or requests for proposals/contracts) and preparation and issue of design engineering deliverables for use on a specific project by Authorized User s client. PIP s copyright notices must be clearly indicated and unequivocally incorporated in documents where an Authorized User desires to provide any third party with copies of the Practice. As a minimum, material, pressure, and temperature requirements should be verified by owner. 02 All butt-welded component thicknesses shall match the pipe thickness and material strength.. 03 Threaded joints NPS 2 and less up to Class 600 are permitted. Threaded joints are not recommended above Class 300 except to match equipment connections. 04 If a pipe schedule is shown under "SCH/RAT," it shall be adequate for the full flange rating. If "CALC" is shown, the pressure limit may be lower than full flange rating. 05 Weld thickness of integrally reinforced branch connections (as defined by ASME B31.3 and MSS SP-97) shall be checked to determine if PWHT is required. Welds in all carbon steels (P1) shall be stress relieved if the thickness exceeds 1-1 4 in. (32 mm). See ASME B31.8 Paragraph 825.2 and 3. 06 These valves shall be used only for vent, drain, and instrument connections. 07 Figure-8 blank, paddle blank or paddle spacer. 08 Full-port valves shall be used if indicated on the P&ID. 09 Pressure and temperature rating can be limited by certain components permitted by this Practice. Manufacturer's recommended pressure-temperature restrictions shall be consulted. 11 Flat-face flanges shall be provided adjacent to flat-face equipment nozzles. 12 These flanges shall be used only to match Class 300 flange connections at control valves and special equipment. 13 Slip-on flanges may be used only with owner approval. 14 Full-face gaskets shall be used at flat-faced flanges. 15 These valves shall be used if mating to flanged nozzles. 16 These check valves shall be installed in a horizontal position with cover up. 17 These check valves shall be installed in a horizontal position with cover up or in a vertical position with upward flow. 18 Sch 160 pipe shall be used for threaded connections.
