PLEASE DON T GET KILLED TODAY!

NOT ON A BICYCLE!

NOT WHILE WALKING!

NOR IN A BIG HUMMER ON A BIG FREEWAY

BECAUSE I LL BE SAD

SO WILL YOUR FAMILY

YOUR FRIENDS OK. These are my friends, but they d be sad too. (on their way to a costume fun run)

AND The other people in the crash. Your neighbors. Your coworkers. Crash witnesses. Emergency responders.

REFRAME THE ISSUE. The value of people s lives does not change based on travel mode.

REFRAME THE ISSUE. This isn t about us and them. It s about making our neighborhoods safe, livable, equitable, healthy, fun, and inviting!

WHICH BRINGS ME TO WHY WE RE HERE TODAY.

Portland s Approach to Traffic Safety Comprehensive Traffic Safety Approach (E)ngineering (E)ducation (E)nforcement (E)ncouragement (E)valuation (E)quity Focus on the Most Vulnerable First Children and Seniors In 2008, 23% of PDX population under 18 In 2008, 13% of PDX population over 65 People with disabilities Provide for Many Travel Options PARTNERSHIPS: transportation, police, neighborhoods, schools, emergency response, business, advocates working together

How to Measure? Per Population not Per Vehicle Miles Traveled Per population asks: Given the way we live our lives, what s the likelihood this type of tragedy will happen to me? Per VMT asks: How many miles do we have to drive to make it look like more people getting killed is rationally linked to improved safety?

Making Progress: Portland v. The World! ( ;-) )

Biggest Safety Benefits: Occupants of Cars and Trucks 1986: 61 MV Fatals 1996: 41 MV Fatals 2013: 25 MV Fatals (2010: LOW 11 MV Fatals)

Using what we've got: Creating Community in the Street

BEFORE: Harbor Drive Freeway CARS BEFORE PEOPLE

AFTER: TOM MCCALL WATERFRONT PARK CITIES ARE FOR PEOPLE!

Creating a park is awesome! But, streets are a much larger canvas.

What we have: It's Big and Expensive! There are more than 4,000,000 miles of roads in America.

What we have: It's Big and Expensive! Portland: 4,000 miles of road More than 20% land mass = ROW 22,000 intersections $10 Billion in transportation assets $250,000 per residential block $250,000 per traffic signal $60,000,000 per mile of freeway (ODOT) 26,000,000 miles traveled each day 100s of millions of human interactions

Every day: 100s of Millions! Shared Experiences Happen in the Street.
