Winter Lectures DEFENDING KILLINEY BAY FREE PRE- BOOKING REQUIRED Marlay House Wednesday 31 January 7pm Pól Ó Duibhir is a retired civil servant who now spends much of his time chasing up his family history and that of the location where he lived twenty years of his life, Killiney Bay. A fully working cannon once more graces the crown of Martello Tower No.7 in Killiney Bay. This tower was a key command structure in the network of permanent defences built around the bay in 1804/5 against an anticipated invasion by the French. The talk will outline the measures taken from 1795 to 1815 to defend Killiney Bay from an expected invasion by the French. It will describe the background of the French Major who surveyed the bay and who went on to finance an unsuccessful attempt on the life of Napoleon. Switching gear, it will then trace the history of the Killiney Hill Road Martello Tower from 1815 to the present day and describe its recent restoration to its former glory. Winter Lectures OLD DUNLEARY 1750-PRESENT DAY FREE PRE- BOOKING REQUIRED Marlay House Wednesday 7th February 7pm The short and narrow strip of coastline from Salthill to Battery Bridge has seen more transformations than any other part of Dún Laoghaire. Although it was the original village of Dunleary, the focus of the town began to move inland and eastward from about 1800. So the area developed its own unique history. A coffee-house, a flawed harbour, a Martello tower, an extension of the Metals, the West Pier, a hotel, a railway terminus, coalyards, a gasworks, livery stables, a major chemicals plant, a ballroom, a street market, a business centre, and apartment blocks have all contributed to the area as we now know it. Winter Lectures THE HOUSES OF DÚN LAOGHAIRE FREE PRE- BOOKING REQUIRED Marlay House Wednesday 14th February 7pm In the early nineteenth century Dún Laoghaire was the fastest growing town in Ireland, going from a small fishing village to one of the largest towns in the country in just a few decades. Often thought of as a Victorian town, its houses were originally more Georgian. This talk looks at how the town grew and how its architecture changed, as the earlier Georgian and Regency styles gave way to Victorian and then Edwardian. Rob Goodbody is a local historian and historic building consultant. He has lectured widely and has published five books, including The Metals from Dalkey to Dún Laoghaire. He is joint author of another four books, including The Martello Towers of Dublin. His guided walks have included the Metals, the houses of Dún Laoghaire and the industrial heritage of Dún Laoghaire.
