Presidents Report After a busy month last month with the running of the asp Mt Alma Mile, it was on going for a few of us with the preparation for the biggest event for the S.D.C.C. calendar, the 2009 asp/cut Price Rentals Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally. The Rally was run over two days and once again was based at Penny s Hill winery. We were very lucky with the weather over the two days, being a bit cool in the mornings but the rain kept away for most of the event except for the last two stages on Sunday. There must be a thankyou to our sponsor s, asp (application Service Provider), Cut price Truck Rentals, Koala Car Rentals, Clemco Almonds, Penny s Hill Winery, Kumho Tyres, Perkins Auto Repairs and Event Power and Light. Without these people it would be make it a lot harder to run these events. The biggest thankyou must go to everyone who took the time on Friday to help set up everything at Penny s Hill Winery. The crew from asp did a great job getting everything ready for the instant timing for the event, with computer screen in the barn as well as a screen at the bottom of Rally Headquarters; this made it so much easier for everyone to see the times for each crew competing. The pack up on the Monday was fantastic; for once we were done by early evening. It was good to see some new faces helping instead of the same people that help at other events we run. As a club we were able to raise a good amount of money for our 2009 charity Cure for Cystic Fibrosis. Thank you to everyone who supported this charity during the event. The Team from Cure 4 CF did a fantastic job on Saturday night cooking the BBQ for about 320 people including the officials and competitors for the event. Once again Michael Clements and his dedicated committee ran a very good event, with no complaints from the competitor s and we have only received good comments so far. Until next month Darryl Power Australian Central Community Lottery Tickets Due Back! If you haven t already done so, please return all lottery books and monies to Christine Smallacombe at the June general meeting or call her ASAP on 8325 1296 or 0412 087 094 to make alternative arrangements.

Rally Power Motorsport Take Out Clubman Round 1 2 nd May saw the running of the 2009 Southern SA Autocross, being round 1 of the Autosport Clubman series and Hyundai Rally series. The event attracted 40 entrants to a damp Lanac Park which was a great turn out. The first run saw Simon West in the ex Bob Whyatt Evo 5 take the lead followed by Mitchell Hall and myself, only separated by under a second. Run 2 saw an anti-clock wise direction run over the front straight jump. Drivers where testing the limits and car strength over the jump. Everyone negotiated the jump safely until Mal Dodd in his beetle lost control and sent it rolling along the bank in front of the timing shed, brushing photographer Skot Carter on the way past. Luckily both walked away with only minor injures. The run saw Mitchell take the lead with myself in second and Simon now in 3 rd. Times remained similar until the 4 th run, which used parts of the H track. This run proved how important our codrivers are, and how reliant we must be for them to give us directions, with both Simon and Mitchell making small errors resulting in wd s. This moved Michael and I in to the top 2 placings with the improving Sandy Nott in 3 rd. Times remained consistent for the rest of the competitive runs though afternoon and the night time runs. The event concluded with a great finish in 1 st for myself, considering the new support in Safeguard Insurance Brokers and Focus Home Improvements who have joined us for this year. Michael Clements in 2 nd 13 seconds back, Sandy Nott 3 rd, Mitchell and Simon back up to 4 th and 5 th. Also was great to see Bradley Clements make an impact in the results finishing an amazing 7 th Outright. Hopefully we will see Bradley and even Guy Tyler out giving the rally guys a run for their money in the near future, and showing the talent that comes out of the JDP! James Rodda Hi everyone! Editor s Report First up I d like to thank to Anne-Marie Pijanka (one of our newer club members), James Rodda, Darryl Power and Skot Carter for providing material to go in this month s magazine. I always enjoy looking at pics and reading about what is happening amongst our membership, particularly the trials and tribulations and how people have learned from them. This month is no exception. Hope you enjoy the read as much as me! As most of you will know, the asp / Cut Price Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally has been run and won just a couple of days before print deadline. I m hoping a couple of you might be so kind as to enlighten us all as to what the event held for you. Competitors and officials alike! Contributions for the July magazine are due by 1 st July at the very latest, but if you can get them in earlier then that will make my life a lot easier! Please send all articles to editor@sdcc.asn.au. Hope to hear from you soon! Until next month, happy and safe motoring! Bonnie McGough

An event update from ADRacing 2009 ACM Khanacross Series Round 2 We entered the ACM Tailem Bend Khanacross event on Sunday May 23, all I can say is we had the best looking numbers! This was the first event for Dylan and the first event with SU's on the Datsun. Preparation went well, we checked everything on the car, bled the clutch and changed the plugs before we left. I had found this stuff called liquid chalk - it comes in pretty colours and we use it on the windows in the war room at work. We left at 6 am through the rain and the Datsun travelled well as we drove to Tailem, did not skip a beat. We registered, got our numbers (4/16), painted them in green and blue on the windows and passed inspection - all was honky dory. The start was delayed and patiently we sat idling, entered the starting garage, put the foot down to accelerate, well the Datsun had a different idea, it gurgled, burped and petered to an embarrassing stop and would not restart, the Datsun was towed out, to the car park. We started bringing tools up from the pit lane, we were gratefully assisted by Brendan and Guy (yellow Toyota - top dudes) and a guy with a light blue Datsun 1600 (no 19 painted on the side - no idea of his name). After eliminating the su's and the electrics from the equation, we discovered that our plugs had fouled, the su's are running a bit rich (which we knew, but didn't think it would cause such an issue). Cleaned the plugs and missing the first round, we entered out of order for the second run, all went well for beginners. Third round went ok, lunch, so we cleaned the plugs again. Our tactic was to clean the plugs every second run, but the car before us would leave getting ready for the garage really late, so when we went to enter for the fourth run, I stated the car - this time she ran, backfired and coughed and spluttered everywhere, we popped the bonnet to find, that 1st and 2nd lead were on the wrong way around, swapped them around and away we went again - running out of order. Cool, we checked the motor after the fourth run, and found a bolt had come off the radiator shroud, so we used good old gaffer tape. I rolled up for the queue for the next run, one of the marshals came up and said "so you re the culprit - I was wondering what the hell I had done, but I had done nothing - they had found a wheel nut in the pit lane - it happened to be off the RHS rear of the Datsun. With the wheel nuts checked again, I ran out of order - yet again. The last run, and Dylan completed his run, lost a bit of control and when he straightened out - I noticed the front number plate hanging by one bolt. This was wired back into place for the drive home. We cleaned the plugs and drove back to Adelaide without the car missing a beat again. So Tailem Bend was a Murphy's event, what could go wrong - did. I thought that if anything was going to fall off, it would at Lanac, but Tailem was the event bolts decided to unravel. From this event we have learnt, that we need to ensure our crucial tools are in the one box, that we need to take a supply of wheel nuts, bolts and screws - just in case, and the su's need to be leaned out. I accompanied Dylan on the first run only, which was good, as I wanted him to make his own decision, learn from his own mistakes, and I think this has started. He is asking questions about power slides, and hand braking, which I cannot answer, so we are now on a quest for information on these topics.

All I can say is we will never be the fastest, but we have the best looking numbers, ours looked as good at the start as they did when we arrived back in Adelaide, the rain did not have a great impact on them. And now off the record - not taking anything away from the Tailem event, we also learnt that there was a difference and that SDCC is a lot more organized, professional in their approach, and has the better facilities. We have been spoiled by being at Lanac with SDCC. There were no green/red flags, no slaloms', only change lanes, one car on the track at a time. Dylan ran one run with the window down, as he had seen others do this (I quickly laid the law down on that one), explaining why it is not safe to run with the windows down, unless we had window netting, etc, etc. Tailem, was fast and we found the surface to be quite slippery - especially with our standard road tyres. We have kept the red stick on numbers from our first event from Lanac, they are ceremoniously placed on the inside of our boot. We are very appreciative of the efforts and organization of the people at SDCC, and to let you know that we think you all are doing a top job. All in all a good day was had by all, lessons learned, we are still concerned about being so slow and I am always conscious of holding people up. The Datsun and I had a number of arguments over her backend behavior, and in some places, you would have thought I was running my own imaginary slaloms, trying to work out what I can do better to avoid getting bent out of shape, but did manage to control the Datsun, except for once. The su's have made a significant difference to the car, extremely responsive to power now, so it is just getting used to this. See pictures of the pretty numbers - easy to see and easy to rub off - I can categorically state we may be slow but we have the best looking numbers in town!
