Navy (3-3) at Towson (0-3) Tuesday, March 16 7:00 pm Johnny Unitas Stadium Towson, Md. Navy Midshipmen 2010 Record 3-3, 2-1 Patriot League 2009 Record 11-5, 4-2 Patriot League Streak Lost 1 Last Game March 12 - lost to #15 Lafayette, 15-8 Next Game March 20 - Holy Cross (12:00 pm) Ranking RV (USILA Coaches); RV (Nike/IL Media) Head Coach Richie Meade (North Carolina 76) Career Record 161-106 (20th year) Navy Record 134-83 (16th year) Sports Information Contact Stacie Michaud Phone 410-293-8773 Email michaud@usna.edu Web Site NavySports.com Game Preview The 3-3 Navy lacrosse team will look to get back on track when the Midshipmen travel to nearby Towson to renew an old rivalry with the Tigers (0-3)... meeting for just the ninth time in series history and the first time since 1997, Navy and Towson will battle one another Tuesday evening at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson beginning at 7:00 pm. Navy looked to have built some steam, picking off Lehigh on the road and Patriot League rival Bucknell at home, however, Navy s winning streak came to a halt last Friday... the undefeated and nationally-ranked Lafayette Leopards scored 10 second-half goals, including four straight to open the third quarter, en route to claiming a 15-8 victory over the Mids... it was Lafayette s first win over Navy in 11 meetings. Towson has been snake bitten in all three of its contests this season, coming up short in games against Bucknell, Stony Brook and most recently Maryland... the Tigers gave up double-digit goals in all three contests, including their 12-8 loss against No. 5 Maryland on Saturday. Tuesday s contest will be broadcast over the radio waves by WNAV 1430 AM with Pete Medhurst handling the call... coverage begins with the Navy Lacrosse Pregame Show at 6:45 pm... live stats will be available at www.towsontigers.com. On The Road Again The Mids are on tap to play five road games and one neutral site contest this spring. Navy has split its two road games to date... the Mids opened up Patriot League play on the road by scoring an 8-3 victory over Lehigh on March 2... Navy, though, dropped a 15-8 decision to Lafayette last Friday. Since the beginning of the 2004 campaign, Navy has lost 12 of its 38 true road games (neutral sites not included). The Mids were 5-4 on the road a year ago, losing twice by one goal (North Carolina, 9-8, Bucknell, 8-7). Navy was outscored by its opponent 77-72 on the road and surrendered eight or more goals in seven of the nine contests. Navy s Patriot League Tournament win over Bucknell last April marked the Mids eighth game on the road... it was the most true road games Navy has played since 1979 when that team turned in a 5-3 road game mark. It was only the third time in the history of the program that Navy had played eight road games... 1975 and 1979 were the others. Towson has given up double figure goals in all three games this season. 1 Navy has won just one of its four games played against Towson on the road. Meet the Mids Navy will hold its annual Meet the Mids event this Saturday following its game against Holy Cross (12:00 pm) at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Members of the Navy men s lacrosse team will be available for autographs on the Blue Concourse, with the first 300 kids in line for the postgame autograph session receiving a Navy lacrosse Meet the Mids t-shirt, compliments of Chick-fil-A. Previewing Towson Guided by 12th-year head coach Tony Seaman, Towson has had a rocky start to the 2010 campaign... having played just three games to date, the Tigers are 0-3 for the first time since the 1978 seadon in which they finished 8-7... Towson has dropped contests to Bucknell (13-9), Stony Brook (14-11) and Maryland (12-8)... the Tigers have surrendered double-digit goals in all three contests. Towson has struggled in its clearing game, successfully getting the ball from defense to offense just 62.7 percent of the time, while its opponents have cleared the ball 91.3 percent of their opportunities. Towson has yet to settle on a keeper... senior keeper Rob Wheeler has started all three contests, but owns a 15.00 goals-against average, while saving just 36.2 percent of the shots he has faced... junior Travis Love, however, had a breakthrough performance against the Terps over the weekend... he has posted a.571 save percentage in the second half of the last two games that featured a career-high seven saves at Maryland. Senior middie Will Harrington is pacing the team with 10 points on a team-best nine goals... five of his nine goals have been scored when Towson was a man up Grad student Chris Pastirik s 10 points have been split between five goals and five assists. Redshirt freshman Matt Thomas owns a 50.0 faceoff percentage, winning 34 of the 68 draws he has taken this season... he has accounted for all but nine faceoffs for the Tigers this spring. Series History Tuesday s contest between Navy and Towson marks only the ninth game in a series that was discontinued following the 1997 campaign... Navy holds a 5-3 advantage, however the Mids have won just one of the four games played at Towson. The inaugural meeting was won by Navy, 13-9, but a regular series was not set up until the 1991 campaign... Navy and Towson met seven straight years before the series stalled out. Navy head coach Richie Meade owns a 1-2 record against Towson. Towson head coach Tony Seaman has never met the Mids during his 12-year stint with the Tigers, however in previous positions with Penn and Johns Hopkins he produced a 12-5 record. Last Time Out vs. the Tigers Towson owned a 4-2 lead and by halftime had jumped out to a 7-2 advantage en route to capturing a 14-6 victory over Navy on April 12, 1997, in Towson. The Midshipmen were anchored by a two-goal effort by attackman Jamie O Leary, while Mike Newton turned in a goal and an assist for the Mids. Future All-American and Kelly Award winner Mickey Jarboe turned in 14 saves as a rookie netminder. 2010 Navy Lacrosse Navy-Towson Series Overall Navy Leads, 5-3 Inaugural Meeting 3-22-75, Navy 13-9 at Annapolis, Md. 2010 Navy Lacrosse Upon Further Review: Lafayette 15, Navy 8 Lafayette scored 10 second-half goals, including four straight to open the third quarter... the last time Navy allowed an opponent to put up 10 goals in a half was April 19, 2003, when Johns Hopkins scored 10 in the opening half (7-3) en route to a 17-3 win in Baltimore. The 15 goals were the most given up by Navy to a team other than Johns Hopkins (twice) since a 15-8 loss to Hofstra in the 1999 NCAA Tournament.. Navy s defense did a nice job of holding Lafayette at bay in the second quarter, as the Leopards scored at 14:07 and not again until 20 seconds remaining in the half. Starting middie Joe Lennon extended his point streak to nine straight games by punching in a pair of goals off assists from sophomore attackman Ryan O Leary. Senior midfielder Patrick Moran has produced a point in every game this season... he and Lennon are the lonesome duo to achieve this feat. Junior midfielder Brian Striffler turned in a career-high two-goal effort against the Leopards. Sophomore keeper RJ Wickham turned in double-digit saves for the fifth time in six games this season, by turning aside 16 shots on goal. Navy s three extra-man goals were a season high. Lafayette came into the game averaging 14.0 goals per game and thanks to seven different goal scorers, Lafayette scored 15 goals for the third time this season. A Closer Look at Navy s Schedule Seven of Navy s opponents this season are among the nation s top 20 teams according to this week s USILA Coaches Poll, including four in the top 10. Rk Team Record Pts. LW 3 North Carolina 6-0 180 4 4 Maryland 4-0 169 5 7 Johns Hopkins 4-2 117 7 9 Georgetown 2-2 103 11 11 Lafayette 5-0 87 15 16 Loyola 3-2 75 9 18 Bucknell 3-2 22 19 Meanwhile, Navy s 2010 schedule features games against three programs who received NCAA Tournament berths a year ago North Carolina, Maryland and Johns Hopkins. Since the start of the 2004 season, Navy has played 54 of its 102 games against teams ranked in the top 25, posting a 30-24 record (55.6)... two of the losses have come against the No. 1-ranked team in the country at the time (Johns Hopkins twice). Since the start of the 2000 campaign, 84 of Navy s 154 games have been against ranked teams... in those games, Navy is 42-42 (50.0). In games against unranked foes since 2000, Navy is 62-8 (88.6)... the losses have come against UMBC ( 01), Air Force and Penn State ( 03), Bucknell ( 05, 09) and Colgate ( 06, 08 and 09). Navy Among Winningest Programs Navy is one of just six Div. I men s lacrosse programs that has produced 700 wins. With 742 wins, Navy is the third-winningest team in Div. Four of Navy s six opponents have punched in goals with under 60 seconds remaining in the period... a total of five goals have been scored in the final minute of the game, including back-to-back goals to North Carolina with under 50 seconds to play in the opening quarter of play (0:49, 0:01). Eventually the mental mistake comes back to haunt you, as it did in the Loyola contest in which the Greyhounds netted the game-winner with just nine seconds left in the first overtime period. 2010 Navy Lacrosse Commitment Makes the Difference Navy is in the midst of one of its most dominant runs in school history... since the start of the 2004 season, Navy owns a 73-29 record (71.6). Navy s 73 wins over the last seven years are tied with Cornell as the fourth most in the country, while its 71.6 winning percentage is the seventh best. Having made six straight NCAA Tournament appearances, it s the third-longest consecutive streak behind Johns Hopkins (38) and Maryland (7). During that same stretch, Navy is 30-24 (55.6) against ranked teams and 43-5 (89.6) against unranked foes. Since the start of the 2004 season, Navy owns a 11-14 (44.0) record against teams ranked higher than it in the USILA Coaches Poll... against lower ranked or unranked teams, Navy is 62-15 (80.5). The Mids have posted a 35-12 (74.5) record at home, outscoring their foes, 484-311, during that span... just nine teams have reached double digits on Navy s home field during that stretch. The Mids are also respectable on road, owning a 27-13 record (67.5) in true road affairs over the last seven years and defeating 14 ranked teams in the process... three of Navy s 13 road losses have come against unranked Patriot League opponents. The Mids have produced the top-three win totals in school history during this stretch... in 2004, Navy won 15 games en route to its NCAA Championship game appearance and in 2005, the Mids produced 12 wins in earning their second-consecutive NCAA Tournament berth... Navy won 11 games in 2006, 07 and 09. The Class of 2007 became the winningest class in school history on March 21, 2007, when it claimed its 45th win in 56 contests... the Class of 07 won 49 of its 64 contests (76.6). Navy has won 10 or more games in a program-record six straight seasons (15 in 2004, 12 in 2005, 11 in 2006, 07 and 09 and 10 in 2008). The Navy duo is among 63 players named to the preseason list released on March 5. A 2009 Honorable Mention All-American, Paul produced two goals and two assists in games against VMI and Loyola before suffering a career-ending knee injury with 2:10 left in regulation against the nationally-ranked Greyhounds on Feb. 20. He was the 2009 recipient of the Coach William H. Dinty Moore Award which is presented to Navy s outstanding offensive player. Last season, he was the Mids top point producer with 32 points on 18 goals and 14 assists. During his four-year career, he scored two or more goals in 22 of the 47 games he saw action in. Vernam is Navy s lone returning starter on close defense, as he emerged as a starter in each of the last 12 games last spring. A member of the Mids man-down unit, he was part of a group that yielded just six extra-man goals in 40 attempts (85.0) to lead the nation in efficiency. It s the seventh consecutive year a Navy player has been named to the watch list. Previous Tewaaraton Watch List Members Yr. Battle, who emerged as Navy s starter towards the end of the season a year ago, has won 65 draws over the last two seasons and stands 13th on Navy s career wins list. Last season he won 33 draws, while this year he has won 32 of the 68 faceoffs (47.1) he has taken... he needs 14 more wins to join the Mids single-season leader board. Coppola garnered Second-Team All-Patriot League recognition a year ago after winning 50.8 percent of his draws (106-214). He currently stands 10th on the Navy leader board with 128 wins over the last three seasons. Coppola has taken just 10 faceoffs this season, winning just three. Sophomore Logan West has won 18 of the 34 draws he has taken this year and adding on his 1 for 5 effort last spring, he stands tied for 16th on the Mids all-time wins list. Career Faceoff Wins Rk. A year ago, Patrick Moran and Evan Sullivan were responsible for a combined 12 of the Mids 15 extra-man goals... Moran has scored four of the Mids eight manup goals this season, while Sullivan is responsible for one... Andy Warner has scored three this season, including two against Lafayette last Friday. Senior middies Joe Lennon and Patrick Moran are the only players to produce a point in all six games this season... furthermore, Lennon owns the team s longest current point producing streak, turning in a point in nine consecutive games... the last game he did not score a goal or deliver an assist was last year s Johns Hopkins contest. Since 2004, Navy owns an amazing 50-1 record when holding its opponents to six or fewer goals, including a 8-0 mark in the last two seasons combined. Sophomore keeper RJ Wickham s 19-save effort against Loyola (2-20), which earned the Feb. 22 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week award, was the best by a Navy keeper since former Navy team captain Seth DiNola turned away 21 shots on goal in a losing effort against Penn State (5-4) on April 12, 2003... Wickham recorded 42 saves (7.00 sv/gm) in six games a year ago and six games into 2010, he has turned back 88 shots on goal (14.7 sv/gm). Wickham has recorded double digit saves in five of the six games this season, coming up just one short at Lehigh. After leading the nation a year ago, Navy s man-down defense has given up 12 goals on 30 attempts (60.0)... last season the Mids surrendered six goals on 40 attempts. Navy owns a 40-2 record when scoring 10 or more goals since 2004, including a 7-0 mark in 2009 and 10. The Mids have won 17 in a row when leading at the half, including a 9-0 mark over the last two seasons... Navy has won 19 straight when leading after three quarters. Navy owns a 15-1 record in Patriot League regular-season games played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium... its lone loss, a 10-9 decision against Colgate last March. Wickham is one of just 18 Navy keepers all-time to play in a game as a freshman. He is only the fourth Navy freshman to get a starting nod in goal, joining Scott Bartkowski, Steve Nims and Mickey Jarboe. Wickham made six saves and gave up eight goals against Bucknell in the 09 league opener in what was his first contest minding the goal. Having played just six games, he finished the year ranked fourth on Navy s all-time freshman saves list with 42. Wickham opened the 2010 campaign with a solid effort, stopping 12 shots on goal against VMI. His 19-save performance against Loyola marked the best effort by a Navy keeper since former Navy team captain Seth DiNola turned away 21 shots on goal in a losing effort against Penn State (5-4) on April 12, 2003... he was rewarded by being named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week on Feb. 23. He recorded his third-straight double-figure save game by turning away 14 shots against fourth-ranked North Carolina. He received his second Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week honor on March 8 after making a combined 27 saves against Lehigh and Bucknell... he made a diving save as time expired in the game against Bison, forcing overtime and an eventual Navy win. Playing an equal number of games as last season (6), he has more than doubled his save production... recording 42 saves last spring, he has made 88 stops this season. He stands second nationally in save percentage, turning back 64.7 percent of the shots he s faced... he s 11th in goals-against average, giving up 8.04 goals per contest... at a team, the Midshipmen are ranked No. 2 in saves per game, stopping 14.83 shots on goal. He is approaching the program s top 20 career leader board... with 130 saves over the last two seasons, he is just 24 saves shy of joining the list... tied for 19th are 2009 graduate Tommy Phelan and 2007 grad Colin Finnegan.
