ST ANDREWS ANGLICAN COLLEGE SPORTS NUTRITION FOR SWIMMING CARNIVALS Swimming several events over a day can be very demanding on the fuel stores in your muscles. Students who have swum or exercised the day before a carnival are particularly at risk of becoming tired and fatigued over a morning of competition. Being prepared with some simple eating and drinking ideas can help maximize energy levels for a fun day at the pool! The day before: Have regular meals and snacks which include nutritious carbohydrate rich food like breads, pasta, noodles, cereals, rice, potato, fruit, and fruit yogurt. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water all day long you should be going to the toilet lots!! Pre-Carnival Eating Guidelines 2-3 hours prior to the carnival beginning include a breakfast which is carbohydrate-rich, low in fat, enough to prevent hunger, but not so much that you feel uncomfortably full. Toast, crumpets, pancakes with a little honey or fruit spread, canned and fresh fruit, fruit yogurt, cereal or porridge, and even baked beans are good choices. Keep sipping cool water up until about ½ hour before your first swim. Eating Between Events It is a good idea to top up your energy levels over the morning, however what you choose will depend on how much time you have in between swims. Here is a guide: If very little time (e.g. 10-15 mins) have sports drink and water only If you have up to ½ hour, try one of the ideas suggested below (you`ll need to be organized and pack some snacks to take with you.) If you have plenty of time (1/2 1 hour) choose a couple of snacks or a sandwich/salad roll plus plenty of fluid of course. Between races - snack ideas (THINGS TO PACK AND BRING WITH YOU!!) Fruit fresh (bananas, orange, mango, watermelon, rock melon, kiwi) or canned fruit Banana & honey roll Creamy rice pudding Plain sandwiches Fruit yogurt Low fat flavoured milk or smoothie Fruit/cereal bars Jelly and fruit Mighty Muffins And when it s all over. This is the only time during the day when you have an excuse to include a small treat which also provides some quick carbohydrates for recovery a few lollies or an icypole, and maybe a sausage from the bbq..but don`t forget to also have some nutritious foods like fruit and sandwiches because this is when your body most needs all those vitamins and minerals to recovery properly. And keep on drinking!! Have a fit and healthy day!
