Vandiveer was born in Ohio in 1881. He arrived in Indian River in 1908, and built a two-story home in Wabasso in 1910. He was an author of books and Mimeo News, a local newspaper. In 1968 he moved to Sefner, and died in 1971 in Plant City. He never married. Scope and Content Contains originals of Wabasso Mimeo News in sleeves, from 1953-1956, the book Fur-trade and Early Western Exploration by Clarence A. Vandiveer, family genealogy information, newspaper articles, poems by Clarence A. Vandiveer, reviews, family correspondence, 35 photographs, and 7 postcards which are kept in the Miscellaneous Postcards Collections - Indian River County. Lula and Will Barker raised their family on Orchid Island before the bridge was built. She had cheesecloth for windows and cooked on an open fire outside. An artesian well supplied water. She once chased a panther out of her home with a palmetto broom. Her small baby was asleep on their rope bed at the time. Life was hard for the small family and Lula divorced William as soon as her children could take care of themselves.
