Golf Course Update Here we are in September and the summer is coming to an end. We have made it through the hot months without any major problems. Greens held up well through the heat and we managed to add to our Bermuda base in fairways and roughs. We are not there in total coverage, but I believe we are on the right track and are heading in a positive direction. Next year I do plan on pre-emerging the fairways, roughs, tees and greens to prevent the crabgrass from establishing. This year I know we have a lot, but the crab will go away once the temperatures drop. Until that time we are hand pulling the crab out of the greens as best we can. The greens still putt well, but I understand how unsightly it is. Aerification of the greens is scheduled for the 24 th and 25 th of September. We will punch them in the same manner as we did in the spring and with good weather they should heal up within the same time frame. Then we will bring down mowing heights and get the greens rolling faster for the winter months once again. After we are done with aerification we will start on over seeding the tees. My plan is to just over seed the tee areas and not the whole tee complex. This will allow the Bermuda to come out of dormancy in the spring without competing with the Rye grass.
This means we will not mow tee boxes for a couple of weeks before we seed. They will look shaggy and unkept, but we need to do this to open up the canopy before we scalp the tees. This allows seed to soil contact for best chance of germination. Your patience during this process is appreciated. We will also overseed clubhouse lawns, driving range tee and parking lot areas. The Golfer s Corner Prepare for winter golf Colder weather is on the horizon. That means long pants, jackets and those handy cart heaters. Brace for the cold months by preparing your golf game. Check those grips and make sure you re prepared for any weather phenomena that might occur. The following tips will help you prepare for golf in the cold weather. Golf in cold weather is hard, so focus on the ½, and ¼ swings. On full shots the ball will not travel as far in cold weather. That being said, it is not ideal to try to hit the ball as far as you can in the winter. Instead, work on and really try to hone in the skills on ½ shots and ¼ shots. Winter is also a great time to work on short game shots, short approach shots and putting. Finally, do not overlook how important stretching is. Stretching your body out before a round is vitally important to help improve almost every aspect of your golf swing. Shane Montoya Golf Shop Manager
