REIS SEASON ENDS EARLY Matt Reis underwent successful debridement surgery on his right ankle on Wednesday morning, and he will miss the remainder of the season while rehabilitating his ankle... Dr. George Theodore performed the surgery at Mass General West, and Reis expected rehab period is approximately three months. MAN-POWER DOWN AGAIN After traveling and dressing only 15 players in Sunday s match at Houston, the Revs will continue to be short-handed on Saturday against Kansas City despite the return of the Gambian internationals midfielder Pat Phelan and defender Cory Gibbs will be forced to sit out Saturday s match while serving a one-game yellow-card accumulation suspension both players picked up their fifth yellow cards of the season in the first half against Houston. DEJA-GOAL, AKA HITTING THE RIGHT NOTE Kheli Dube s game-winning goal at Houston on Sunday had an air of familiarity about it that s because a very similar situation happened just more than one month ago at home against Seattle for the second time this season, while playing on the right wing for Sainey Nyassi who was off on international duty, Dube scored a goal but the similarity doesn t end there as Ilija Stolica also assisted on both goals. SHUTTLEWORTH STEPS IN... Bobby Shuttleworth made his third-career start in goal on Sunday, replacing Matt Reis who served as the back-up Shuttleworth made a career-high six saves in the winning effort his second career win and his first win in a game in which he started Shuttleworth last saw action on Aug. 28, when Philly earned a come-from-behind win in stoppage time at Gillette Stadium.... AND STAYS IN With the news that Matt Reis underwent debridement surgery on his right ankle on Wednesday, Bobby Shuttleworth is expected to start the team s remaining two games in goal... Shuttleworth, who signed with the club midway through the 2009 season, started the season as the third-string goalkeeper without any MLS experience... but after Preston Burpo s horrific in-game injury on May 29, Shuttleworth has made a total of four league appearances, posting a 2-2-0 record in league action, while adding another win and a shutout in SuperLiga play. DUBE BACK IN FORM, CAREER-HIGH SET Kheli Dube picked up an assist on Sainey Nyassi s goal against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 2, his first since May 8 at Columbus Dube is tied for the team lead in assists shared with Shalrie Joseph with five to mark a new career high, but he went almost five months without an assist Dube has appeared in 18 games this season making 11 starts but missed five games (July 31 at Philadelphia through Aug. 21 at Kansas City) with a knee injury... his five assists this season surpassed his previous single-season high of four, which he recorded as a rookie in 2008. GOAL (LOW) RECORD IN JEOPARDY The Revs scored a club-record low 33 goals in 2009, but the 2010 squad is threatening to lower that mark even further... through 28 games this season, the Revs have only scored 31 goals, averaging 1.11 goals per game... in order to match or exceed the standing club-record low of 33 goals, the Revs would have to match at least thier current goals per game average in each of the final two games of the season. OTHER RECORDS IN PERIL In addition to the club-record low for goal scoring that s in danger of falling this season, several other club records are on the rocks: Record 2010 Mark Record # Year Assists (low) 25 29 2008 Shots on Goal (low) 125 133 2009 Fouls Committed (low) 300 326 2009 Fouls Suffered (low) 310 369 1998 Cautions (low) 40 44 2008 LOSSES OF HISTORIC PROPORTIONS The Revs 15 losses so far in 2010 are the team s most in the recent scoring era of MLS (2004 - present) when there were no shootouts or overtime... the team s 13 losses in 2004 had been the team s highest loss total since the league did away with the penalty shootout (1996-1999) and overtime (2000-2003)... prior to the 2004 season, the Revs lost 15 or more games in each of the team s first four seasons (1996-17, 1997-17, 1998-21, 1999-20)... the team s top all-time season loss total was 21 losses in 1998, a season in which the club went 11-21, including a 2-4 mark in shootouts. PLAYOFF STREAK SNAPPED With the draw against Columbus on Sept. 25, and coupled with several other results around the league, the Revs were officially eliminated from playoff consideration for the first time since 2001 the Revs saw their run of eight straight playoff appearances the longest current run in the league snapped after having appeared in the postseason in each season from 2002 on the eight-year run was also Boston s longest current playoff streak of the city s five professional sports teams. JOSEPH S SURPRISING STATS With three goals in the last four games, Shalrie Joseph now has 27 goals in his career, which has spanned the last eight seasons... he is now fifth in Revs club history in goal scoring, ahead of Clint Dempsey (2004-06) in sixth place... more surprising, however, is that Joseph is now ranked second in club history in shots, with 252... he is now ahead of former U.S. National Team forwards Joe-Max Moore (third, 247) and Pat Noonan (fourth, 234). ONE SERB, TWO SERBS First it started with one Serb - midfielder Marko Perovic - then it became two Serbs when forward Ilija Stolica joined the team in August... the pair has been a boost to the Revs attack, combining for 11 goals and six assists in all competitions... the duo has been responsible for 43.2 percent of the team s scoring this season (16-of-37 goals in all competitions)... Perovic has eight total goals (6 MLS, 2 SuperLiga) and four assists (3 MLS, 1 SuperLiga), while Stolica has added three goals and two assists, all in MLS action... however, only once - at Dallas on Sept. 22 - has the pair combined on the same goal, Stolica s 66th-minute goal on which Perovic assisted. DEFENSIVE BREAKDOWN The team s two goals allowed against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 2 marked the 15th time this season that the Revs allowed two or more goals... on the road this year the phenomenon is even more pronouced as New England has surrendered two or more goals nine times in 14 away games the 2-2 draw at FC Dallas on Sept. 22 was the fifth straight away game in which the team allowed two or more goals the Revs 1.74 goals against average is the worst (16th of 16 teams) in MLS, and the team s 2.14 goals against average on the road ranks tied for 15th out of 16 teams in MLS.

AND SCORING TROUBLES New England has been shut out nine times this season through 28 games, the highest mark since the 1999 season when the Revs were blanked a club-record 10 times in the 32-game schedule the team s 31 goals overall ranks 12th out of 16 teams, and the Revs 1.11 goals per game average ranks tied for 12th of 16 teams. HOME GAMES HIGHER SCORING THAN MOST While the Revs are having trouble scoring overall this season with 31 goals in 28 games, the Revs are a bit more potent at home... at Gillette Stadium, New England has scored 20 goals, for a 1.43 goals per game average, tied for seventh of 16 teams in home scoring average... the scoring difference has helped the Revs compile a 6-5-3 home mark. NEW-LOOK STALWARTS In years past, veteran players like Jay Heaps, Steve Ralston and Taylor Twellman dotted the top of the Revs stats for starts and appearances with those players retiring, coaching and recovering, respectively, this season, a new set of names are at the top of the team s appearance and starts charts Pat Phelan (27 appearances, 25 yrs. old), Sainey Nyassi (26 appearances, 21 yrs. old.) and Chris Tierney (25 appearances, 24 yrs. old) are the team s new stalwarts - and team s leaders in appearances - and all 25 years old or younger. PHELAN STEPS INTO THE LEAD Pat Phelan now holds the team lead in appearances this year with 27 the third-year midfielder s 27 appearances are more than his previous single-season high of 21, which he established last season in 2009 the former Toronto FC draft pick out of Wake Forest has also established a new career high in starts with 24, which is second on the team behind Nyassi s 25 starts... his total will stall this week, however, as he is suspended for Saturday s game against Kansas City while serving a one-game caution accumulation suspension. MAN-GAMES LOST TO INJURY CONTINUES TO CLIMB The Revolution has clearly been plagued by injuries this season, and the trend has not let up through the entire year through their last match, New England has lost 170 man-games because of injury through 28 MLS matches... that figure equates to an average greater than six players per game a significant number considering the 24-man roster limit the Revs have never had fewer than four players miss a game because of injury and had as many as nine (Aug. 7 vs. D.C.) because of various ailments six current or former players on the New England roster have missed double-figure games this season because of injury: Taylor Twellman (28, post-concussion symptoms), former Rev Edgaras Jankauskas (20, calf and adductor strains), Nico Colaluca (17, knee and ankle sprains), Preston Burpo (17, leg fractures/ surgery), Zak Boggs (16 games, concussion and knee/ankle sprain) and Matt Reis (14, knee and shoulder surgeries). PEROVIĆ INSISTS ON GETTING THE ASSIST With his assist on Sainey Nyassi s goal against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 2, Marko Perovic picked up an assist in the third straight game... after scoring a team-leading six goals in his first 18 games, the Serb has picked up assists in three of the last four games with six goals and three assists, Perović is the team s leading scorer and is also tied for third in assists on the team, behind leaders Shalrie Joseph and Kheli Dube (five each) and tied with Chris Tierney. VERS-A-TIERNEY So far this season, Chris Tierney has played six different positions in all competitions - left midfield (his preferred position), left back, right back, defensive central midfield, attacking central midfield and center back... while the third-year pro from Wellesley, Mass., came to the Revs as a left-sided midfielder, he was later converted to left back in his first season... he played more left back in 2009, and this season, after extensive off-season work to improve his speed, has been deployed as a central midfielder, center back and right back, as well... Tierney has made a career-high 25 MLS appearances (previous high was 14) and has appeared in eight other non-league matches this season. INDIVIDUAL BEST BEHAVIOR Chris Tierney, the team s nominee for the MLS Fair Play Award, has committed only 10 fouls this season while appearing in 25 games... when compared to all players around the league who have started at least 24 games, Tierney ranks third overall in fouls committed, behind San Jose s Jason Hernandez (5), D.C. s Santino Quaranta (9) and tied with Philadelphia s Sebastien LeToux (10)... further, of that list, only LeToux and Tierney have not been cautioned or ejected this season. DEFENSIVE SHIFTERS In the last 20 MLS matches, the Revs have run out 16 different defensive units utilizing Kevin Alston, Darrius Barnes, Cory Gibbs, former Rev Joseph Niouky, Emmanuel Osei, Pat Phelan, Seth Sinovic and Chris Tierney on only seven occasions since early May has the team been able to use repeat lineups July 31 at Philadelphia, Aug. 18 at Chicago and Sept. 10 at Chivas USA (Gibbs, Barnes, Osei, Alston), July 10 vs. LA and Sept. 4 vs. Seattle (Sinovic, Barnes, Osei, Alston) and Aug. 7 vs. DC and Oct. 10 at Houston (Tierney, Gibbs, Barnes, Osei) the last time the team ran out the same defensive unit in back-to-back games was May 1 against Dallas and May 5 against Chivas USA (Seth Sinovic, Cory Gibbs, Darrius Barnes and Kevin Alston). ROAD TROUBLES SEEMINGLY SOLVED After 11 matches spanning April through September, the Revs finally snapped their almost season-long winless streak on Sunday at Houston... with goals from Shalrie Joseph and Kheli Dube, the Revs pulled a 2-1 victory from the match... while it took a full 27 weeks to get road win number two, signs of change appeared in the team s previous road game on Sept. 22... up 2-0 in the 79th minute at Dallas, the Revs were on the verge of snapping their 10-game winless streak on the road, which dated back to April 17... however, the Hoops found two goals (one penalty kick in the 80th minute and a 93rd-minute equalizer) to pull even, and New England s road futility extended to 11 games. WESTERN WOES ALSO VANISH In 2010, the Revs posted a final 4-9-3 overall record against Western Conference teams, including an 1-6-1 record on the road... the Revs earned their first - and only - road win against the West on Sunday at Houston, and also snapped a four-game winless streak against the West after starting the season 0-6-2 against the West, the Revs had earned three consecutive wins against Western teams (July 10 vs. LA, Aug. 14 vs. Houston and Sept. 4 vs. Seattle), however all three of those games were at home. SCORING TROUBLES (MAYBE) SORTED ON THE ROAD New England has been shut out on the road seven times this season, and the team s 0.79 goals per game road scoring average is tied for 12th of 16 teams in 14 road matches this year, the team has scored 11 goals, but four of those goals have come in the last two games in fact, the Revs scored two goals away from home on four separate occasions (April 3 at D.C., May 8 at Columbus, Sept. 22 at Dallas and Oct. 10 at Houston) and added single goals three times (July 31 at Philly, Aug. 18 at Chicago and Aug. 21 at Kansas City). TWELLMAN CHANGES ROLE THIS SEASON Unable to take to the field at all this season, Taylor Twellman has taken his soccer expertise to the broadcast booth... earlier this season, he was brought in by Revolution broadcast partner Comcast SportsNet New England to serve as a daily in-studio expert for the network s monthlong World Cup coverage... following that experience, Twellman stepped into the Revs broadcast booth and handled the analysis of the team s SuperLiga matches with play-by-play man Brad Feldman... soon after, ESPN came calling and the club s all-time leading scorer served as the color commentator for multiple summer matches including international squads, as well as several MLS matches... recently, Twellman jumped from primarily soccer coverage to all-sports expert through fill-in spots on CSN s Mohegan Sun Sports Tonight show, sitting alongside host Gary Tanguay for Friday s show... he also returned to the Revs booth and was the color voice with Feldman for the SuperLiga final on Sept. 1. TIERNEY TOPS OLD MARK Chris Tierney s assist on Shalrie Joseph s goal at Dallas (Sept. 22) was his third assist of the season, setting a new single-season high for the third-year pro from Wellesley... he is now tied for third on the team in assists (with Marko Perovic) behind Joseph and Kheli Dube (five each), and leads the club in game-winning assists (two)... Tierney has six career assists, after recording one in his rookie season in 2008, and two last year in 2009. (NOT) SHOOTING THEMSELVES IN THE FOOT In 17 of 28 matches this season, the Revs have been out-shot by their opponents... included in that total are 11 matches in which the team has amassed single-digit shot totals... included in that single-digit total are the Revs last four road matches - Oct. 10 at Houston (eight shots), Sept. 22 at Dallas (eight shots), Sept. 18 at Colorado (nine shots) and the Sept. 10 match at Chivas USA in which they had just three shots, the team s second-lowest game total of 2010... 10 of the 11 single-digit games were played on the road, as well... the Revs season low was two shots at Seattle on June 5... the Revs 20-shot effort on Oct. 2 against RSL was their second-highest total of the season, behind the 22-shot effort on June 27 against Chicago.
