Moyne Templetuohy GAA Club Annual Newsletter 2017 By Mark Dunne PRO

Message from our PRO This production will hopefully be the first in a long line of annual publications detailing our club s efforts both on and off the field. My sincere thanks must go to Tom Hassett (Senior Secretary), Una Ryan (Juvenile Secretary), Billy Loughnane and the Tipperary Libraries. 2017 has been by all accounts a very successful year for the Club. Our Minors performed exceptionally well reaching two county finals, although success eluded them they can be very proud of their efforts. Our Intermediate hurlers also reached a County Semi Final only to be beaten by eventual Champions St. Mary s. On the juvenile front, our hard-working committee ensured that all our teams from U6 to U16 performed to the best of their ability. A special word must go to our U14 s who had a tremendous topped off by representing our club at Féile 2017. All members now sit and wait as we prepare for the 2018 season to begin. On behalf of the club we would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Mark Dunne Moyne Templetuohy Hurling Field

Intermediate Hurling 2017 2017 saw our Intermediate Hurlers contest 20 games between Intermediate Hurling League, County Intermediate Championship, Mid Championship and Challenges. The 12 th March was the first outing of 2017 in the County League where a hard-fought game saw our players immerge with a 0-13 to 0-08 victory over Lattin Cullen Gaels. Subsequent league games saw victories over St Mary s (0-19 to 0-13) and Moyle Rovers (2-17 to 1-03). However, defeat to Ballinahinch (1-21 to 1-13) and Sean Treacy s (2-21 to 0-14) saw our league journey end due to the new structure of the league. Preparation continued in earnest for the forthcoming County Championship. With the draws made our first championship game of the summer was scheduled for May 28 th against St. Mary s of Clonmel. A ferocious battle ensued with a single point the only difference on the day. The importance of raising a green flag was crucial in the victory. Early in the second half and with only two minutes on the clock a long range free into Mary s defence found its way to Mark Ryan who finish neatly to the net, ultimately sealing victory and giving the club a crucial platform on which to build on for the remaining games. Tipperary s progress to the All-Ireland Semi Finals halted progress of the championship for most of the summer. The 13 th August finally saw round 2 of the Championship take place. Holycross was the venue for this clash of Mid Rivals and the game did not disappoint. Chances for both teams to walk away with victory kept spectators put but it was not to be. However, with a win and a draw to our name Moyne Templetuohy topped Group 3 of the Intermediate Championship for 2017.

Preliminary Quarter Final draws made and Thurles Sarsfields awaited. A tenacious battle ensued in Gortnahoe with Moyne Templetuohy once again coming good on another one-point victory. The nerve shown to come away with a one-point victory will serve to enhance this team s performance into the future. On a desperate night for hurling Dr. Morris Park now served up this years County Quarter Final. With Moneygall as opponents, we were pushed all the way but once again the ability to secure that much needed goal, assisted in this victory (1-16 to 0-13). With a three-day turnaround now facing the team, preparations were minimal with recovery the primary thought. A County Semi Final awaited against old enemies St. Mary s. On a tough week for the club, our hurlers left everything out on the field of play. The three days turn around did not make things easier, but this was not to be an excuse. This ultimately ended our Intermediate Hurlers year for 2017. Sincere thanks must be given to Manager Pierce Ryan, Coach Barney Naughnane, Selectors Eddie Kelly, Phil Bowe and Bill Morrisey for their expertise and professionalism they have shown throughout the year. Intermediate Football 2017 2017 was a year with great potential for our Intermediate Footballers however circumstances outside of their control saw them only play two competitive games along with one challenge game during the year. Due to the unforeseen nature of the competitions our Mid Intermediate Final versus Moycarkey Borris was scheduled for June 18 th in Boherlahan. With only a short period of notice prior to the game, preparation did not go as planned. This being said the game was in the balance for much of the sixty minutes. Handling errors coupled with near misses resulted in a three-point loss. Great credit is due to that group of players who gave it their all on the day. Following the loss, a County Quarter Final position was up for grabs. Similarly, to the Mid Championship the fixing of these games was unknown until a week prior. 15 weeks after playing our first competitive game, we took on Clonmel Óg in a County Quarter Final. In a game that ebbed and flowed from beginning to end, our lads never once faltered. In a game that could have went either way it was to be the men from the South that would progress. Our thanks must be conveyed to the management team of Kieran Healy, Padraig Costigan and Michael Esmonde for the work and time they gave these players over the past few months. 18/06/17 IFC Mid Final: M/Tuohy 0-09 Moycarkey 2-06 Boherlahan 25/07/17 Challenge: M/Templetuohy 2-13 JK Brackens 0-13 Templetuohy 1/10/17 IFC Co. Junior Hurling & Football In total our Junior Hurlers & Footballers played a combined number of 11 games in this year s championship/league. The Junior Hurling League began in earnest in March. Unfortunately, we suffered two defeats in league, the first a 3-18 to 0-11 point loss to Brackens and seven days later a 2-14 to 1-08 lost to Drom/Inch. With two losses this ended our participation in the Junior League. The Junior Hurling Championship provided some tight and close games throughout the year. The opening round pitted us against near rivals Thurles Sarsfields and after sixty minutes of hurling we ran out 1-22 to 4-11 winners. Round 2 was a much closer affair and only one point separated us from Gortnahoe, unfortunately it was to be the wrong side of the result. With one win and one loss we were pitted against Knock in a play off and on the 4 th August, we defeated them 6-30 to 1-05 in Templetuohy. All roads led to Templemore for the Semi Final vs Killea, alas it was not to be and Killea ran out 2-15 to 0-14 point winners. 01/04/17 JHL: M/Templetuohy 0-11 JK Brackens 3-18 Templemore 08/04/17 JHL: M/Templetuohy 1-08 Drom Inch 2-14 Templetuohy 24/06/17 Challenge: M/Tuohy 1-21 Rathdowney 4-15 Errill 02/07/17 JHC: M/Templetuohy 1-22 Thurles 4-11 Templetuohy 21/07/17 JHC: M/Templetuohy 1-10 Gortnahoe 2-08 Gortnahoe 04/08/17 JHC: M/Templetuohy 6-30 Knock 1-05 Templetuohy 27/08/17 JHC: M/Templetuohy 0-14 Killea 2-15 Templemore Our Junior Footballers began their 2017 campaign with a home game versus Boherlahan Dualla in Templetuohy. A tight affair on a warm evening for football saw Boherlahan Dualla take a one-point victory (1-10 to 1-09). The next game was a must win versus Moycarkey Borris. With more preparation and training completed for this fixture Moyne Templetuohy came away with a two-point victory to set them up for a Mid Final appearance against Boherlahan. In what was a tight and tense game of football, the referee abandoned the game close to full time. The re-fixture saw both clubs low on numbers due to suspensions etc. Out thanks to all those who coached and trained these teams for 2017. 07/07/17 JFC: M/Templetuohy 1-09 Boherlahan 1-10 Templetuohy 29/07/17 JFC: M/Templetuohy 1-10 Moycarkey Borris 1-08 Littleton 01/09/17 Challenge: M/Tuohy 3-12 Moyle Rovers 2-07 Templetuohy 05/11/17 JFC Final: M/Templetuohy 0-02 Boherlahan 1-12 The Ragg

U21 Hurling & Football Our U21 s for 2017, similar to our Minor were amalgamated with Thurles Gaels for all competitions. Like all years the U21 Hurling Competition is spread out over several months. Our first game took place on the 19 th of March where we took on old rivals Thurles Sarsfields in what turned out to be a one-sided affair on the day. Goals proved crucial and Moyne Templetuohy Thurles Gaels scored three to run out 3-17 to 1-08 winners. Unfortunately, we had to wait another six months to play our divisional semi final where we faced Moycarkey Borris in the Ragg on the 29 th of October. Despite hurling very well on a very heavy field, the strength and depth of the Moycarkey panel did enough to progress and they were eventually crowned County Champions. Our thanks to Enda Everard, Diarmuid Fogarty and Pat Flanagan for coaching them throughout the year, 19/03/17 U21HC: MTT Gaels 3-17 Thurles Sars 1-08 Thurles 29/10/17 U21HC SF MTT Gaels 1-10 Moycarkey Borris 3-19 The Ragg Our U21 Footballers reached a Mid Final this year and were unfortunate not to be crowned Mid Champions on the day. The opening round of the championship pitted us against Gortnahoe, unfortunately on the day as the old saying goes, goals wins matches and Gortnahoe scored four. This placed us in the Loser Group Final where defeated Boherlahan Dualla to set up a rematch against Gortnahoe Glengoole in the Mid Final. What can be said about this panel of players. Seven points down at the break they fought back tooth and nail and could easily have won the game. Our thanks to Kieran Healy, Pat Flanagan and Diarmuid Fogarty for the time and effort they put into this group of players. 28/01/17 Mid FC: MTT Gaels 0-08 Gortnahoe 4-08 Gortnahoe 04/02/17 Mid QF: MTT Gaels 3-10 Boherlahan 1-08 Templetuohy 12/02/17 Challenge: MTT Gaels 0-09 Brackens 6-10 Templemore 19/02/17 Mid Final: MTT Gaels 3-06 Gortnahoe 3-10 Templemore

Minor Hurling & Football 2017 Pride of place this year must go to our amalgamated Minor Hurling and Football team who completed the Mid Double and also represented the club with honour in two County Finals. Their year began with an away game to Boherlahan on March 29 th and despite their best efforts came up just short on the day. Subsequent victories over Moycarkey and Gortnahoe gave them a good platform to build on. A tough evening against Drom/Inch in Kickham Park saw our lads come up just short. A final round win over Upperchurch pitted them against the same opposition in the Mid Semi Final. What a spectacle of football we were treated to in the Mid Semi Final, where the two teams could not be separated. A replay was required and MTT Gaels goal scoring prowess saw them advance to the Mid Final following a 7-06 to 2-09 Replay win over Upperchurch. All roads let to Holycross were we faced strong Boherlahan side who had defeated us earlier in the year. However, this was not going to occur again and MTT Gaels were crowned Mid Tipperary Minor B Football Champions for 2017. We were then pitted against South Champions Ardfinnan, and what a game of football we were once again treated to. A single kick of the ball was all that separated the sides and we qualified for this years County Final. Due to circumstances outside of our control the county final was delayed until December 9 th. A strong Kilruane McDonough s team were our opposition and unfortunately on the day it was not to be. However, their heads can be held high as they have done the club proud for their efforts in the Football Championship. 29/.3/17 MFC: MTT Gaels 1-05 Boherlahan 2-08 Boherlahan 06/04/17 MFC: MTT Gaels 4-12 Moycarkey 2-07 Templetuohy 11/04/17 MFC: MTT Gaels 3-02 Gortnahoe 2-04 Gortnahoe 19/04/17 MFC: MTT Gaels 2-07 Drom/Inch 2-11 Kickham Park 26/04/17 MFC: MTT Gaels 3-08 Upperchurch 1-10 Drombane 05/05/17 MFC SF: MTT Gaels 2-14 Upperchurch 1-17 Templetuohy 15/05/17 MFC SF(R): MTT Gaels 7-06 Upperchurch 2-09 Drombane 19/05/17 MFC Final: MTT Gaels 1-09 Boherlahan 2-04 Holycross 23/09/17 Co. SF: MTT Gaels 1-09 Ardfinnan 0-09 Clonoulty 9/12/17 Co. Final: MTT Gaels 1-03 Kilruane 2-11 Dr. Morris With the success of the Football a driving factor, MTT Gaels looked forward to the Hurling Championship, hoping to repeat their fortunes of the football.

The 9 th of July saw MTT Gaels open their hurling account with a 2-21 to 0-16 win over Loughmore Castleiney. Subsequent victories over Sarsfields, Moycarkey gave MTT Gaels a semi final spot versus Thurles Sarsfields. On a lovely summers evening in Castleiney, MTT Gaels took to the field with strong ambitions of reaching a Mid Final. Playing together as a unit and with some terrific passages of play they ran out 0-22 to 0-12 winners and hence qualified for the Mid Final versus Drom/Inch. Once again, all roads led to Templemore, where Drom/Inch provided worthy opponents. A terrific and hard game of hurling took place with MTT Gaels were crowned Mid Tipperary Minor B Hurling Champions for 2017, completing the double. A County Semi Final against Anner Gaels awaited and on the day an exhibition in work rate was the basis of our 4-13 to 1-08 victory. A county Final now awaited this brilliant team, with Dolla the venue. In what was always going to be a difficult task, Borrisokane were worthy winners. On the day Conor Bowe, Gearoid O Connor and Darrah Taylor all hurled well, but it was not to be. The excitement this team has brought to the two clubs this year has been wonderful. A fantastic bunch of individuals led by a top-class management team of Sean Everard, Pat O Connor, John Sweeney, Pat Flanagan and Morgan Lanigan. The future is very bright for both clubs with this crop of players coming through. 09/07/17 MHC: MTT Gaels 2-21 Loughmore 0-16 Templetuohy 21/07/17 MHC: MTT Gaels 4-22 Sarsfields 0-03 Templetuohy 27/07/17 MHC: MTT Gaels 5-24 Moycarkey 0-07 Templetuohy 29/08/17 MHC SF: MTT Gaels 0-22 Sarsfields 0-12 Castleiney 09/09/17 MHC Final; MTT Gaels 2-16 Drom/inch 0-15 Templemore 30/09/17 Co. Juveniles 2017 2017 can be remembered as a very successful year for our Juvenile Club. With teams fielded from u6 s to U 16 s, our juvenile club is going from strength to strength. The hard-working committee led by Willie Bergin and Una Ryan ensured all teams and games went ahead without issue. The future of the club lies with our newest recruits our U6 s. They trained for the majority of the year enjoying many evenings and Saturday mornings of fun as they learned the basic skills of our ancient game. Our 8 s and 10 s trained from March on this year and enjoyed many blitzes organised by both the club and he division. One of the highlights of the year was our U9 s who travelled to Clane to participate in the Kevin Fogarty Memorial Tournament. Our U12 s successfully captured two Mid Football titles this year. Our Group 5 team had 4-05 to 3-00 win over Durlas Óg. While our Group 2 team needed extra time to overcome Boherlahan. They went on to contest County Final where they were very unfortunate not to defeat Ballylooby Castlegrace. In the hurling side of things, we did not fare as well as we hoped. Pitted in the A Division, the strength and depth of other teams did not allow us to play to the best of our ability. Our thanks to all those coaches who trained our 12 s this year. Your time is very much appreciated. Pride of the place for the Juvenile Club this year goes to our U14 team who collected silverware throughout the year. Early in the year our U14 s defeated Durlas Óg to be crowned Mid U14C Football Champions for 2017. They then went on to the County Final where they took on Clonmel Commercials. On a tough day for football marred by some controversy, we were unsuccessful in our attempt for county glory. The hurling competition was as exciting as the football and saw our 14 s reach the Mid Final. Playing against a strong Durlas Óg side we were unsuccessful in our attempt for the glory. However, highlight of the year for this bunch of players was their trip to the Ballyhogue Club in Co. Wexford to take part in the national Féile. Basking in the sun of the South East, the players, management and those who travelled enjoyed a fantastic weekend of hurling and craic. Following the group stages, we qualified for the shield competition, where we reached the Division 10 Final, only to be beaten by Eire Óg of Longford. Sincere thanks to all those who sponsored our team on their trip to the Féile 2017. Thanks to the management team on a wonderful job done, where they also won the Butler Cup trophy for 2017.

Our U16 s this year succumbed to short numbers but can be very proud of their efforts that they showed throughout. Competing well in all their matches, they showed grit and determination not to give up. Our thanks to the coaches and parents for all their assistance throughout the year.
