SUU shared the third position with Oakland University while Western Illinois University was placed fifth, North Dakota State University sixth, Centenary College seventh and IPFW in eighth. CUTHBERTSON, SHAW EARN ALL-SUMMIT LEAGUE FIRST TEAM HONORS Southern Utah had three first-team and one second-team all-summit League selections last season. Bo Cuthbertson earned first-team honors at second base after batting.344 during the season and breaking the single-season school record in doubles with 21. The junior shortstop did the most damage during conference play with team-bests of 31 runs, 43 hits, 16 doubles, five triples and 78 total bases. Freshmen Taylor Shaw and Joe Goldenberg were honored at catcher and utility with first-team accolades. The award is the first time since 2007 that an SUU freshman has collected all-conference honors as Bucky Aona earned secondteam honors that year. Shaw finished the year second on the team with a.364 average, including a.400 average during Summit League play. Shaw also finished in the top five in ten other offensive categories and was second on the team with 210 putouts this season. ON TOP OF HIS GAME Southern Utah shortstop Bo Cuthbertson jumped out of the gates early and currently leads the Summit League in several offensive categories. So far this season the switch-hitting junior has racked up 21 runs, 34 hits, 21 RBI, five triples, and eight eight stolen bases, all of which are the current league benchmarks. He also ranks fifth in doubles with eight, and third in homeruns with three. His five triples are the 17th most by any player in the nation at this point. SHAW NAMED TO PING! FRESHMAN ALL-AMERICAN THIRD TEAM Southern Utah University s redshirt-sophomore catcher Taylor Shaw was named to the Ping!Baseball Freshman All-American Third Team last season, the second consecutive Thunderbird to earn the award after Bo Cuthbertson was named to the third team in 2009. Shaw shared time behind the plate with fellow freshman Joe Goldenberg during the year, batting.364 with four home runs and 28 RBI. He was especially dangerous during league play when he hit.400 from the plate, leading the team in that category. Overall, Shaw was in the top five of nine offensive categories en route to first-team all-summit League accolades at the end of the 2010 season. FORMER T-BIRD SIGNS WITH SEATTLE MARINERS Former Southern Utah Thunderbird Keli i Zablan has signed a minor league contract to play for Major League Baseball s Seattle Mariners. Zablan, a former infielder turned pitcher, was picked up by the Mariners after recently impressing Seattle scouts at an Invite-Only tryout held at the Mariners spring training complex in Peoria, Ariz. Zablan spent last summer pitching for the River City Rascals, an Independent League team out of the St. Louis area that plays in the Frontier League. The right-hander was named the Frontier League s Rookie of the Year after posting a 2-1 record with a 3.15 ERA in his 28 appearances for the Rascals. He finished 14 games and struck out 29 in 40 innings all out of the bullpen. Zablan helped the Rascals to a Frontier League Championship Series title after he pitched 3.1 scoreless innings of relief in his three appearances during the playoffs.the Ewa Beach, Hawaii native was a three-time All-Conference infielder for the Thunderbirds from 2006-09. 2011 southern utah thunderbird baseball 3

head coach david eldredge David Eldredge begins his seventh season as the head coach for Southern Utah University. During his time at SUU, Eldredge has produced four teams that have won 26 or more games including the 2008 team that set a school-record with 31 wins. Eldredge has taken three Thunderbird teams to the Summit League Tournament including the 2008 team that reached the championship game. Eldredge continued the success in 2009, leading SUU to its highest overall winning percentage in program-history along with the school s highest ever winning percentage in conference play with a 16-7 (.696) mark. During his six seasons, Eldredge has had 28 players earn All-Conference accolades including 11 first-team selections and three Thunderbirds receive Freshmen All-American honors, including catcher Taylor Shaw last season, infielder Bo Cuthbertson in 2009 and first baseman Bucky Aona in 2007. He has also had eight players earn spots on the All-Tournament team in the program s three conference tournament appearances (2005, 2008-09). Southern Utah s baseball record books have also been rewritten under Eldredge s tenure as new school records have been set in at bats, hits, stolen bases, slugging percentage, fielding percentage, double plays, shutouts, saves, innings pitched and strikeouts. Individual records have also fallen as Eldredge s recruits have set new career standards in games played, at bats, runs, hits, RBI, doubles, home runs, total bases, games pitched and saves. Eldredge has coached five players selected in the top-five rounds of the Major League amateur draft and he was the college coach of former New York Met outfielder Benny Agbayani. Most recently, former Thunderbird Keli I Zablan signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners. Eldredge has 20 years of collegiate coaching experience behind him, serving a four-year stint as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Brigham Young prior to coming to SUU. At BYU, Eldredge helped lead the Cougars to a Mountain West regular season title in 2001, MWC tournament championships in 2001 and 2002 and two berths into the NCAA regionals. Eldredge also held a similar post at Loyola Marymount from 1996-98, where he was instrumental in bringing in the nation s 16th-best recruiting class as rated by Collegiate Baseball. He was on the bench as the Lions won the West Coast Conference title and earned an NCAA tournament berth in 1998. Eldredge began his collegiate coaching career at Hawaii Pacific in Honolulu from 1989-95, where he was a five-time District 29 Coach of the Year honoree in guiding the Sea Warriors to five district championships and five regional berths, while his 1991 club finished the season ranked fourth in the nation. Eldredge was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1979 and was a prep all-american at Punahou High. Eldredge elected to play collegiately at BYU from 1980-83, where he was an All-Western Athletic Conference selection and was voted team captain of the Cougars top-ranked club in 1983. Following his playing career at BYU, he began his coaching career as an assistant at Honolulu s Punahou High School where he coached from 1985-89 and again in 1996. While at Punahou, Eldredge served as pitching coach and helped lead the program to three league championships, four state tournament appearances and one state title. He has also been active in numerous youth baseball programs and has won national titles at the Babe Ruth and AAU levels. He is married to the former Valerie Albert-Thenet, a former Mrs. Hawaii, Mrs. America runner-up and Mrs. World third runner-up. The couple are the parents of five sons, Kaiana, Kahi, Kanai, Koa and Kui. 2011 southern utah thunderbird baseball 4
