ASU/WICHITA STATE HISTORY ASU and the Shockers have met on three previous occasions with ASU holding an all-time series lead of 2-1. ASU defeated Wichita State 73-66 in the last meeting between the two schools during the 1997-98 season. The Red Wolves were coached by Jeff Mittie and current head coach Brian Boyer was an assistant on Mittie s staff. This will be the third all-time meeting between the two schools and only the second time the schools have met in Jonesboro. The other previous meetings have been at Wichita State, inlcuding one meeting in the Shocker Classic during the 1991-92 season. SCOUTING THE SHOCKERS The Shockers went 20-13 in 2011-12, and lost only two starters from last year s squad. Wichita State went 12-6 in the Missouri Valley Conference and finished third in the league. The Shockers made their fourth ever apperance in the WNIT last season. Jody Adams is in her fifth season at Wichita State and has a record of 68-61 at the school. Wichita State narrowly lost to LSU in its season-opener 72-70. The Shockers return three starts from last year s squad, inlcuding senior Jessica Diamond who led the team in scoring with 13.3 points per game and.490 field goal percentage. POUNDING THE PAINT Over 60 percent of ASU s points have come from in the paint this season. Of ASU s 96 points, 60 of them have been scored in the painted area. BREAKOUT PERFORMANCE Junior Carlisha Wyatt had a breakout performance against UT-Martin on Nov. 12. The junior college transfer from Angelina Community College scored 19 points and went 9-of-11 from the field against the Skyhawks. She hit her first nine shots and had 10 points at halftime. STREAKING BEYOND THE ARC ASU has knocked down a 3-pointer in 91 straight games. The streak has come to close to ending in ASU s first two regular season games. Jessica Flanery kept the streak alive with a 3 against Toledo with just six seconds left in the game and Jane Morrill knocked down ASU s first 3 of the game against UT-Martin with just 28 seconds left in the game. Flanery s 3 against Toledo was the first field goal of her career. The last time A-State did not make a 3 was on Nov. 20, 2011 against Virginia Commonwealth when the Red Wolves went 0-11 from behind the 3-point line.

(11/12/12) After trailing by just one at halftime, Arkansas State fell victim to a slow start in the second half in a 72-62 loss to UT-Martin in a non-conference matchup at Skyhawk Arena on Monday night. The Skyhawks led by as many 14 in the second half, but the Red Wolves (0-2) cut the lead to 63-59 with 2:49 left in the game after going on an 8-0 run, but ASU could get no closer. UT-Martin (1-1) pushed the lead back to six on a layup by Shelby Crawford and Jessica Newsome made it an eight-point game after knocking down two free throws with 1:06 left in the game. The Skyhawks went 7-8 from the free throw line in the game s final minute to help close out the victory. We chipped our way back into it and got it down to four with ball and didn t score, ASU head coach Brian Boyer said. We just got to keep working at this and we are just trying to do some different things offensively. It seems like every possession we are frustrated at something and that is something we have got to change pretty quick. ASU was led by junior college transfer Carlisha Wyatt who poured in 19 points and went 9-for-11 from the field. Wyatt went 5-for-5 from the field in the first half and paced the A-State bench which had 29 points on the night. ASU found early success working the ball inside to its post players. Morrill scored eight points in the first half as the Red Wolves outscored the Skyhawks 20-14 in the paint. 2012-13 Women s Basketball Preseason All-Conference Second Team Taylor Ford (UALR, Junior, Guard) Jane Morrill (Arkansas State, Junior, Forward) Chenise Miller (Florida Atlantic, RS-Junior, Forward) Finda Mansare (FIU, Senior, Forward) Mansa El (South Alabama, Senior, Guard) 2012-13 Women s Basketball Preseason All-Conference Third Team Janette Merriex (UALR, Senior, Guard/Forward) Jasmine Shaw (Louisiana-Monroe, Junior, Guard) Mary Nixon (South Alabama, Senior, Guard) Chastity Gooch (WKU, Sophomore, Forward) Alexis Govan (WKU, Sophomore, Guard) 2012-13 Women s Basketball Preseason Player of the Year Jerica Coley (FIU, Junior, Guard) Official Basketball Box Score -- Game Totals -- Final Statistics Arkansas State vs UT Martin 11-12-12 7 p.m. at Elam Center - Martin, Tenn. HEAD COACH BRIAN BOYER After 13 seasons at the helm of the Arkansas State women s basketball program, head coach Brian Boyer has not only established himself as the winningest coach in ASU women s basketball history, but as the winningest basketball coach to ever pace the sideline at Arkansas State. When Boyer led the Red Wolves to a 54-51 victory over UALR in the 2010-11 regular season finale, he passed former women s head coach Jerry Ann Winters with 197 victories, moving to the top of the list of all coaches in the history of ASU men s or women s basketball. Since then, Boyer s career victory total has risen to 211, including 111 Sun Belt Conference victories. His SBC win total ranks fourth all-time, a ranking that includes all women s and men s head coaches, and ranks second among active coaches. During the 2011-12 season, he became the only ASU basketball coach to ever reach the 200-victory mark, and produced another All-SBC player in sophomore Jane Morrill, the 21st player to earn the honor under Boyer. During the season, Arkansas State picked up notable victories over Southern Cal, WNIT participant Toledo and NCAA Tournament participant UT-Martin. The Red Wolves finished the 2010-11 season strong, winning seven of their last nine games to advance to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament and close out the year at 18-14, with a 9-7 slate in league play. The Red Wolves also saw two players earn post-season accolades, with senior Shay Scott earning third-team All-SBC honors and junior guard NeNe Hurst landing a spot on the All-Sun Belt Conference Tournament team. Throughout the season, the Red Wolves relied on defense on way to their 18 victories. Arkansas State finished the season at No. 4 in the nation in three-point field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to just 26 percent shooting from outside the arc. The Red Wolves were also 28th nationally with a plus-3.94 turnover margin and their 10.3 steals per game ranked 46th in the nation. Arkansas State held its opponents to just 57.4 points-per-game on the season to finish 54th nationally in total defense. Under Boyer's guidance, Arkansas State has reached the Women's National Invitation Tournament four times. He led the Red Wolves to the 2003-04 Sun Belt East Division Championship, the program has produced 21 All-Sun Belt Conference players with Boyer at the helm, and Boyer was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year following the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons. Boyer came to ASU in ASU s Winningest Basketball Coaches 1. Brian Boyer (women s - 211) 2. Jerry Ann Winters (women s - 196) 3. John Rauth (men s - 191) 1995 spending four seasons as an assistant for former head coach Jeff Mittie, who is now the head coach at TCU. As an assistant to the men's team, Missouri Western was a NCAA Division II Tournament participant five years (1990, 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1995) and won two conference championships. The team made the Sweet 16 in 1990.
