Calhoun Coming up Big Bo Calhoun has been asked to play major minutes lately, especially with Matt Kamieniecki slowed by a back injury, and he has responded with the best basketball of his career. Over the past 14 games, Calhoun is leading the team in points (13.1) and rebounds (7.5) per game. In the first 15 games, he averaged 5.8 points and 4.6 rebounds. Calhoun has scored double figures in 12 of the past 14 games and logged double-doubles in three of them -- vs. Ohio, at Akron and vs. Buffalo. They are the first doubledoubles of his career. Most Improved Ball State post players Bo Calhoun and Franko House are among the most improved offensive players in the MAC from last year to this year in terms of conference-only scoring average. Calhoun has raised his MAC scoring average 9.1 points from last year, the second-best improvement in the league behind only Justin Moss of Buffalo. House has raised his by 5.4 points, the eighth-best improvement. They rank second and fifth, respectively, in terms of improvement among the league s post players. Examining Calhoun s Performance at Toledo Bo Calhoun exploded for 30 points Feb. 28 at Toledo, surpassing his previous career-high by 12. It was the first 30-point performance by a Ball State player since Jauwan Scaife went for 34 at Central Michigan almost exactly two years earlier (Feb. 27, 2013). Calhoun s 30-point performance was the third-best road scoring performance in the MAC this season. Eastern Michigan s Raven Lee scored 33 at Ohio (Feb. 7), and Kent State s Jimmy Lee went for 32 at Ball State (Jan. 24). BALL STATE TRADITION 1st NCAA Sweet 16 Ball State was the first MAC team to reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament after the field expanded to 64 teams. The Cardinals, who reached that round in 1990, are one of five MAC teams to make the Sweet 16 since then. 6 MAC Regular Season Championships (since 1980) Only Miami (eight) has more MAC regular season titles since 1980. 7 MAC Tournament Championships The most of any team in league history. Ohio is next with six, followed by Kent State with five. 7 NCAA Tournament Appearances The second-most of any team in the MAC since 1980 (Miami has eight). 10 All-America Selections The most of any program in MAC history. 29 Ball State s 29 wins in 1988-89 still rank as the second-most in a single season in MAC history. The Cardinals finished that season 29-3. 1,155 All-Time Wins The Cardinals have won 1,155 games in 94 seasons of play. 2,485 Ball State s Bonzi Wells (1994-98) ranks as the top scorer in MAC history with 2,485 career points. He also ranks first in MAC history with 347 career steals. 6 www.ballstatesports.com

MAC Top Freshman Scorer Sean Sellers is the top freshman scorer in the MAC at 11.9 points per game. He ranks tied for 20th among all MAC players in scoring and is the only freshman in the top 30. Sellers is one of the MAC s top shooters, ranking fourth in the league in 3-point percentage (.432) and second in free throw percentage (.807). His 3-point percentage ranks as the fourth-best among all freshmen in the country. He has set a Ball State freshman record with 63 3-pointers, surpassing Zavier Turner s total of 61 from a year ago. With 346 points, he is tied for fifth place on Ball State s all-time freshman scoring list with Jarrod Jones (2008-09). House s Steady Play Sophomore forward Franko House has scored double figures in 10 of the past 11 games. House s 11.9 points-per-game scoring average in conference play leads the team. His.539 shooting percentage in league play ranks fifth among all MAC players. NATION S TOP FRESHMAN 3-POINT SHOOTERS (min. 3 attempts per game) 1..530 Cornell Johnson, E. Seven of those top-100 losses have come against MAC opponents. Pomeroy has the MAC rated as the 10th-best conference in the country. The league has not finished a season rated that highly since 2005. Shooting the 3 For the season, Ball State ranks 48th in the country with 7.8 made 3 s per game. Ball State matched its season high with 14 made 3-pointers Jan. 31 at Miami, coming up two shy of the school record. The Cardinals also hit 14 in a game earlier this season against Grambling State, marking the most for the program since 2006. Seven different players recorded a 3-pointer for Ball State in the game against Miami. It was the most players the Cardinals have had make a 3 in a single game since the 2001-02 season. That year s team had eight players make a 3 in a game twice. The Cardinals have knocked down double-digit 3-pointers in seven games this season. Last year s team reached 10 treys in a game three times all season. Searching for Consistency Ball State has struggled to find lineup consistency this season with several players missing time for various reasons. Through 29 games, the Cardinals have utilized nine different starting lineups. Eleven different players have started at least one game for Ball State this season. Second-Half Leads Ball State held a second-half lead in six of its 16 conference losses. In those six games, Ball State either led or was tied for 152:48 of a possible 255 minutes but wasn t been able to finish off a win. Kammy Being Kammy Matt Kamieniecki has ranked among the top 10 nationally in defensive rebounding percentage all season, although he now has not played enough games to qualify for the rankings. Kamieniecki grabbed double-figure rebounds in each of the first four MAC games -- 14 at Eastern Michigan, 10 against Central Michigan, 13 at Western Michigan and 11 at Bowling Green. His production and playing time have been slowed by a back injury in recent weeks. Davis Finding His Footing Junior guard Jeremiah Davis has provided a veteran presence to the Ball State back court since making his debut 19 games ago after missing the opening 10 games to injury. Davis was injured in practice during the last week of October and missed nine weeks. A redshirt junior, he spent two and a half years at Cincinnati before transferring to Ball State in January. He was granted eligibility by the NCAA to play the full 2014-15 season but wound up missing the first semester because of his injury. Sharing the Ball Ball State has assisted on 57.5 percent of its baskets this season (370 of 643). That percentage is the highest of any MAC team. Central Michigan is next at 54.0 percent. The Cardinals highest single-game percentage (77.8 percent) came with 14 assists on 18 made field goals in the win over Longwood. Ball State has six players with at least 20 assists this season, led by sophomore point guard Zavier Turner with 83 (3.2 per game). Stepping into a Bigger Role Walk-on Rocco Belcaster was awarded a scholarship for the second semester. After playing in two games as a true freshman and then redshirting last year, he has earned a key role on this year s team. He is averaging 3.5 points and 2.1 rebounds while playing 17.6 minutes per game. He set a new career high for scoring in each of the season s first four games, capped by a 15-point effort against Grambling State. Youth is Served Ball State is a youthful team with freshmen and sophomores combining to score 68.4 percent of the team s points (1,290 of 1,886) this season. The Cardinals feature the 25th-youngest roster in the country according to Ken Pomeroy s experience metric, which places Ball State at No. 329 out of 351 teams. Three of the Cardinals top four scorers for the season are freshman Sean Sellers (346 points) and sophomores Franko House (299) and Zavier Turner (228). 2015 SIGNING CLASS Ball State added size and athleticism to its future roster this month with the signing of Tahjai Teague and Trey Moses to National Letters of Intent. Teague is a 6-foot-8, 190-pound forward from Pike High School in Indianapolis, while Moses is a 6-foot-9, 240-pound post player from Eastern High School in Louisville. Teague is a four-star recruit by 247Sports, which rates him as the No. 103 player nationally in this year s recruiting class. He was an Indiana Junior All-Star last season after averaging 11.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. He is a cousin of NBA players Jeff and Marquis Teague and a former high school teammate of current Ball State point guard Zavier Turner. Moses averaged 12.5 points, eight rebounds and four blocks per game as a junior in helping Eastern to a 22-9 record. He shot 67 percent from the floor and was named to the All-Seventh Region Second Team. Mid-American Basketball Consultants lists Moses as the No. 3 player in the state of Kentucky for 2015. Kamieniecki Producing When Healthy Matt Kamieniecki provided a lift for the Cardinals for the first half of the season, returning after missing the entire 2013-14 season with a wrist injury. Kamieniecki has been hampered by injuries throughout his career. He started the first 16 games of this season but has missed eight of the past 13 with a back injury. Here is a look at his statistics this year compared to his first three seasons... Category First 3 Seasons This season Minutes per game 15.7 21.6 Points per game 3.1 8.2 per game 3.9 7.2 Double-Doubles 1 5 Playing without Tyler Freshman guard Jeremie Tyler is academically ineligible for the second semester and will miss the remainder of the season. Tyler started the first nine games of the season for the Cardinals. The Indianapolis native averaged 12.0 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. He shot 42.9 percent from 3-point range. He remains a student at Ball State and, per NCAA rules, is allowed to practice with the team but not compete until he meets NCAA academic eligibility standards. 8 www.ballstatesports.com

Sellers Shines Early Freshman wing Sean Sellers got his career off to a fast start, becoming the first freshman in Ball State history to score at least 18 points in each of his first three games. His 26 points at Utah set a Ball State record for most points by a freshman in a debut performance. Jarrod Jones previously held the record with 21 in the 2008-09 opener against Eastern Illinois. Sellers 26 points were the fifth-most ever by a Ball State freshman and the most since Bonzi Wills set the school s freshman scoring record with 40 points against Ohio in March of 1995. Turner scored 362 points last season to rank fourth on the Cardinals all-time freshman scoring list. He knocked down 61 3-pointers, setting a Ball State freshman record. Turner led MAC freshmen in points (12.1), assists (3.7) and minutes (32.7) per game along with 3-point percentage (.409) and free throw percentage (.880). He ranked in the top 10 among all MAC players in each of those categories except scoring, where he ranked in the top 20. House Transforms His Body Sophomore forward Franko House has transformed himself since arriving on campus in summer 2013. He has dropped from 268 pounds to 238 pounds and has trimmed his body fat from 16.7 percent to 7.0 percent. A Winning Pedigree For the first time since 1996, Ball State welcomed two players in the same class who were selected as Indiana All-Stars -- Sean Sellers and Jeremie Tyler. Those two are joined in the Cardinals freshman class by Francis Kiapway, Rashaun Richardson and walk-on Tye Wilburn. Kiapway made his debut at IUPUI, while Richardson will redshirt and Wilburn is recovering from injury. Tyler and Richardson teamed together to win a class 4A state championship at Indianapolis Arsenal Tech last year, defeating Wilburn s Lake Central team in the finals. Sellers led Greensburg High School to a 3A state title, while Kiapway was on a prep school national runner-up team at St. Thomas More in Connecticut. Those five players led teams that combined for a 105-15 record last season (28-1 for Sellers, 27-2 for Tyler and Richardson, 22-4 for Wilburn and 28-8 for Kiapway). More Newcomers Ball State also brought in a pair of veterans in junior college All-American Bik Gill and Youngstown State transfer Ryan Weber. Gill is playing for the Cardinals this season after earning third-team All-America honors last year, leading Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio, to a 25-6 record. Weber, Youngstown State s second-leading scorer at 12.2 points per game last year, will practice with the team but sit out from competition because of NCAA transfer rules. He will then have two years of eligibility remaining. OUT OF THE SHADOWS For the second year in a row, Ball State Sports Link is producing a monthly show that takes viewers behind the scenes of Ball State men s basketball. The second season of Out of the Shadows premiered in October with a season preview episode. The show airs nationally on Fox College Sports, statewide on Comcast Indiana 81 and locally in Muncie on WIPB. Additionally, the episodes are available at ballstatesports.com and on the BSUSportsLink YouTube channel. The fifth episode aired in February. In his career as an assistant at Arizona, Xavier and Miami University, Whitford s teams posted an overall record of 400-208, reached the NCAA tournament 10 times and played in the postseason 13 times. The Cardinals went 5-25 in his first year as Whitford installed his new system with a roster that featured four freshmen playing significant minutes. Zavier Turner led Mid-American Conference freshmen in scoring and assists and was named the MAC Freshman of the Year. Whitford signed a 2014 freshman class that includes three state champions, a prep school national runner up and, for the first time at Ball State since 1996, two Indiana All-Stars. Whitford served four years on the staff at Arizona, including his final two as the associate head coach. He was with Arizona head coach Sean Miller for eight seasons, dating back to Miller s days guiding the Xavier program. Whitford also brought more than a decade of experience with the Mid-American Conference, having served on the staff at Miami University under Herb Sendek and Charlie Coles for 11 seasons before joining Miller at Xavier. Whitford helped Arizona to an average of 27 wins per season over his final three years in Tucson, including a 30-win campaign in 2010-11 that featured a Pac-10 Conference championship and an appearance in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. He served as recruiting coordinator at Arizona and helped the program consistently land nationally ranked signing classes. The Wildcats 2012 class was rated as high as third in the country. Whitford was in charge of developing Arizona s post players, one of whom, Derrick Williams, became the No. 2 overall selection in the 2011 NBA Draft. Before heading West, Whitford helped the Xavier program to an impressive run during his four years in Cincinnati. The Musketeers posted an overall record of 103-35, won three Atlantic 10 Conference championships and played in the NCAA Tournament all four years, reaching the Elite Eight in 2007-08. Whitford joined the staff at Xavier after working his way up the ranks at Miami, starting as an administrative assistant for two seasons from 1994-96 and rising to the top assistant position under Coles from 1998-2005. He was a part of three NCAA Tournament appearances at Miami, including the RedHawks 1999 Sweet 16 run. A native of Madison, Wis., Whitford earned his start in college basketball as a manager at Wisconsin and graduated from the school in 1994 with a bachelor s degree in political science. He earned a master s degree in sports studies from Miami in 1996. ON THE BENCH Jason Grunkemeyer Associate Head Coach Second Season Miami University, 2001 A former standout at Miami, Grunkemeyer was previously an assistant coach with the RedHawks and at Saint Louis.
