She has 7 years experience on the committee, plus 2 years under her belt as Stable Manager. She competes with her mare Falda in show Jumping and eventing. She is currently working as Personal Assistant and Guest House Manager, which she juggles with the chairpersonship. She has been with the Club since her schooldays. In fact, her main reason for attending Stellenbosch University was to stay involved with the club. She notes: Unlike most students who graduate and leave, I decided to change my career and start working at the stables. Since I have left my position as Stable Manager I have always been on the committee. I have seen the club develop and grow and I would love to share this amazing facility the US has to offer with more students next year. She adds: As Chair it is my job to manage the committee as a whole and assist them with doing their jobs as efficiently as possible. Noordhoek- Christmas Show

Julie Lustgarten is our Stable manager. She has been riding for 25 year. As she observes: I started at the tender age of 3 and have never looked back. I compete in showjumping, dressage and eventing. I have been working as an equine physio for the past 3 years. As the stable manager at Maties, I help look after our horsey children. Our dream team of grooms are Simba (Head Groom), Alex, Seun and Kelvin. A HAPPY EVENT! Maties Equestrian is expecting a new addition to our family. The beautiful Rozeetha is pregnant and we await her foal in mid- November! Please remember to respect her space and privacy and watch out for the new electric fence around her paddock, which looks very smart! PHOTO OF THE MONTH. Mikaela Bairamis (to enter please send to sss@sun.ac.za. Mystery prize offered!

Portfolio "Training Club Horses" Ursina Rusch is taking on a new committee portfolio this year involving the schooling of the club horses via a "buddy system" where club committee members are assigned a horse which they school on a weekly basis. This will improve the overall training and health of our horses as well as increasing the value of the riding lessons offered on the club horses at Maties Equestrian. Ursina has been at Maties Equestrian for almost 3 years after moving to South Africa from Canada. She rides mostly dressage and has a keen interest in Classical Dressage training. She has a 19 year old Spanish Appaloosa at home in Canada and has been leasing Rozeetha at Maties for the past year. Introducing the "Buddy System" (all credit to Andrea Kruger!) Maties Equestrian owns 5 club horses as well as having one horse on lease which are used for our daily riding lessons with kids and students. It is important that, in order for us to offer quality riding lessons, we have well-schooled horses that have the ability to teach their riders new skills and improve themselves. The aim of the Buddy System is to create club horses with solid, basic training and a basic self-carriage. This will be achieved by having club committee members invest 30-45min per week on an assigned horse or pony and train it target-specific to its needs. We hope that over time, this will create well-rounded horses and ponies that can add value to a rider s lesson and keep them in good health with minimal body (mostly back) issues. Stay tuned for updates and progress on the program!. Melanie Lustgarten is the riding school manager (phone 083 500 9632, melanie_lustgarten@yahoo.com) She looks after the running of the riding school and kids lessons. If you are interested in taking lessons at our stables please contact her! Cost: R160 per hour and R120 per 30 minutes.

Mikaela Bairamis MEC Student Representative is originally from Zimbabwe and moved to Stellenbosch a few years ago. She organises the clubs social events and is known to spend almost all her time up at the stables, riding the handsome Bally or the endearing JD! Lauren Boyd is Club secretary, she studies BA Honours in Psychology. She rides Magic Bean and loves riding for fun as it takes her mind off work stress and helps her to relax. Her position as Secretary involves sending out emails, organising weekend duty and taking minutes at meetings. Martina Meincken is our Club treasurer. She is a physicist / polymer scientist and arrived in 1998 (from Germany) for a 6 months internship. Well, she is still here, she says, because it is just so beautiful. She is now teaching at the Department of Forest and Wood Science and besides physics is involved in the bioenergy sector. In the meantime she has a family with two little kids and a pony with attitude Madube. Sandra Swart is in charge of the Community Initiatives. She lectures in the History Department. Some of her research has been into horses in sub-saharan Africa, and has been published as Riding High horses, humans and history in South Africa (Witwatersrand University Press, 2010). The Community Project, which uses equine facilitated therapy to make a difference in the lives of disempowered humans. She owns the magnificent Magic Bean (stable name Bean ), who is an nine-year old gelding of imperial descent. Aimee Russouw is a new member to the committee and her portfolio is club outrides and helping with the schooling of the club horses. She is a student at Stellenbosch University studying a BSc Animal Sciences, intending to specialize in cattle and horse fertility. This is her 16th year of horse riding and she says she still enjoys every minute of working with horses. She gives lessons too! Cheree Canny is the new Disciplinary Representative. This portfolio focuses on encouraging competitive riding. Cheree is responsible for notifying the Club about upcoming shows, keeping track of the results and motivating more competitive riding! Beware, happy hackers, Cheree is coming!
