Marcellin had only 9 points to spare from ANZ Bank, who have not won a match, but Old Ivanhoe scored a resounding win over AJAX. La Trobe Reds, who have not yet broken the ice, played a draw with St. Bede's, whose kicking let them down, and Elsternwick beat Monash Whites by 27 points. In Junior Section games, Old Scotch scored a 3-point win over Power House, but Ormond, Monash and St. Bernard's all had comfortable wins. North Old Boys beat University Blues by 26 points in Section 2, slashing the Blues' percentage from 1074.7 to 489.5. Both had been unbeaten previously. Old Brighton beat Tooronga-Malvern by 5 points, and Beverley Hills did rather better, running National Bank to 29 points. In the Reserves, Coburg beat Ormond by 10 points, North Old Boys beat Caulfield Grammar by 3 points, Tooronga-Malvern drew with Collegians, Blacks and Geelong easily beat Trinity and Carey respectively, Assumption beat Melburnians by a goal, Fairfield beat Xavier by 8 points, Alphington beat La Trobe Blacks by 4 points, Marcellin beat ANZ Bank by 2, AJAX went down to Old Ivanhoe, and Monash Whites thrashed Elsternwick. COMMONWEALTH BANK AJAX JUNIORS LOOKING BACK 5 YEARS AGO - 1967 Coburg suffered their first defeat - victors were Uni. Blacks by 45 points with Milner (6 goals) a star. In 'B' Section North Old Boys won their first game at the expense of Ormond, previously undefeated. 100 games to John MacKenzie (Old Scotch) and Ian Brown (Old Geelong). Among the notes "what an asset Kevin Heath is to Assumption Old Collegians - 22 marks to half-time, and another 18 kicks in second half". 10 YEARS AGO - 1962 U.H.S.O.B. (14.17) with Karanicolas a star, thrashed Old Melburnians (7.9) in the surprise of the day. Geoff Hibbins (Collegians) became the first player in that club to play 200 games - and to date had won 5 V.A.F.A. fairest and best awards (3 in A and 2 in B Section). Leading goalkicker in Junior Section was Graeme Watson of Ormond with 34 goals (now a member of the present Australian test team in England). 20 YEARS AGO - 1952 Champion full forward, Duncan Anderson kicked 12 goals for University Blues (20.16) who defeated Old Paradians (9.13). Commonwealth Bank (9.14) scraped in from H. Rovers (9.12) - among the stars, "Banks goalsneak" Greasy Malcolm - now a man in white (20 years ago and still going!). Stars for Ivanhoe in a big win over State Savings Bank were Jim and Jack Neeson, Ken Aldred and John Manuell. MARKING OF GROUNDS Many umpires have complained of the unsatisfactory marking of grounds this season - boundary lines, kickoff lines. and centre circle. The attention of clubs is drawn to this, with a reminder that a fine may be incurred if this matter is not attended to. Page 4 THE A MATEUR FOOTBALLER - May 20, 1972

UMPIRES CORNE R HINTS FOR GOAL UMPIRE S It is just as important for goal umpires to "look the part", as it is for the field umpire. Dress in a manner befitting your position. On wet days, wear black studded boots. You are called upon to move about smartly and you should make sure of standing on your feet. Don't be influenced by spectators or players. Make sure you receive the "all clear" from the field umpire before raising either one or two flags. Never stand with your hands in your pockets. Be careful to record the score on your score-card, on every occasion you wave the flags. BOUNDARY UMPIRES Immediately you get the ball throw it in. Do not wait for the rucks to get into position, that's their worry - yours is to put the ball into play. After a goal has been scored, rush the ball back to the centre. Never kick the ball - this is unforgivable. School teacherv Brian Hagarty celebrated his increase in salary with a quick trip to the Capital Territory. Congratulations to Coburg mentor Alan Salter on being appointed coach of the Victorian interstate team. Alan who has a vast knowledge of football, is one of our most respected coaches, and we feel sure he will be as successful with this team as he has been with his own club - Alan we wish you success. Goal umpire Lance Williams is talking about going into training, he reckons he can't take the knocks any more? Without doubt the tallest player to represent St. Kilda CBOC, Dennis Drew, played his 50th game for the club recently. Dennis is still learning to use his great height but is always an earnest trier and will undoubtedly improve to become one of the club's top ruckmen, and a force in our rise up the ladder through to "A" grade. Congratulations, Dennis. ROSS FAULKNER'S `luative' Brand Footballs THE ONLY BALL USED BY BOTH THE * V.F.L. & '` V.F.A. SOCIAL NOTE S Caulfield Grammarians will hold a special dinner for John Wilson, senior coach from 1961-1971, at the M.C.G. on Friday 9th June at 6.30 p.m. Guest speakers will be the Hon. ORMOND FULL-BACK'S 200th Ortnond's Graeme (Lumpy) Mora n played his 200th game against Coburg last Saturday. Graeme, who has broken the heart of many a full forward, has been an ornament to the game as a footballer and a man. He has represented Victoria in interstate football and is playing as well as ever. Ormond is tremendously proud of Graeme, who was elected a life member last year, and has been a committee member for several years. 100th GAME TO OM's PLAYER Congrats to `Rocket' Rod Brow n who played his 100th game for Old Melburnians last week. Rod has been around since 1966 when he won the club's best and fairest in his first year. Brownie would rather go through a pack than around and his gutsy determined play is an inspiration to the young players. The club and supporters congratulate `Rocket' and hope he will be around for years to come. 100 GAMES FOR ASSUMPTION CAPTAIN Paul "Stooge" Nugent cracked the ton when he led the team out last Saturday. After a serious knee injury that interrupted his career, Paul has come back with more courage, determination and brilliance than before. His play on the field has been an inspiration and example to all players, particularly the younger ones. Paul's great team spirit has been a source of strength on the field and off the field with his involvement in club affairs. Congratulations Paul and we all look forward to your future with the club. NORTH MAN HAS 100 UP Bernie Sheehy, the inimitable an d popular North Old Boys captain-coach (Reserves), played his 100th game for the purple-people eaters recently. Serious breaks because of injury and study have interrupted the career of Ron Casey's greatest rival, but determination and ability have brought up the ton. And so to the next. Power House would like to congratulate two fine clubmen who recently played their 50th game. Greg Meredith and Geoff Sharp graduated from the Junior ranks and have played a big part in the success of the Reserves this year. Congratulations to you both. AND A CENTURY AT ORMOND TOO There would be no team who coul d boast of a better clubmember than Ormond's Jeff Mortimer who played his 100th game last Saturday week. Jeff, who was Min Ormond's premiership team last season is an unselfish, courageous player whose attitude in placing the club first is an example for any footballer to follow. 150 GAMES TO JOHN TIEDGEN OF ALPHINGTON He has been deciding to give football away every other week for a few years but the ball comes his way again and he is off again. He learns new tricks occasionally, such as a couple of tremendous hand-passes near the goals. Forget your golf, that's a game for old blokes. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-May 20, 1972 Page 17 I I

150th to BANK COACH AND FULL BACK From Junior captain to Club Assistant Coach is the colourful record of Les Radford who played his 150th Senior game for Commonwealth Bank. A Senior best and fairest winner in 1970 Les has played most of his football in the ruck, but this year seems to have a mortgage on the centre half back position. His active committee duties coupled with the Ladies Committee work done by his charming wife Margaret make the pair a boom to the club. Today another stalwart in Terry Dick joins Les as he runs out for his 150th Senior game. Another product of our Junior club where he played 24 games, and when we throw in 37 Reserves games Terry has an impressive record indeed. Who will forget his magnificent game in the 1966 Bank carnival against Western Australia, or his courageous effort in the 1969 Grand Final, when he took mark after mark, whilst playing with a broken finger. Terry now capably holds down the full back position. TRINITY PLAYER REACHES CENTURY Congratulations to Old Trinity's Rod De Boos who played his 100th game for the club last week. Rod has given the club great service both as a player and committee-man, this year taking on the difficult task of social convenor. Rod's fitness and skill has been of great assistance to both the Seniors and Reserves. Congratulations are also in order to Phillip Watson who played his 50th game for the club last week. 100 UP TO ST. KILDA PLAYER Belated congratulations on his 100 games go to Laurie Sheehan from all at St. Kilda CBOC. One of the finest players ever to represent the club, "Bags" has served the side all over the field in brilliant fashion. Typical of his class was last week's effort, whe n Page 18 he took the ball from the half-back f.ank where he was stationed, right down the field to pop it through for a major, as if to show his opponent, a half-forward flanker, how to do it. We are indeed fortunate not to have lost Laurie to the big smoke and we can expect many more top performances in the years to come. Well done, "Bags' > CENTURY TO DE LA SALLE MAN Congratulations must go to De La Salle's Geoff Lyons who played his 100th game against Old Paradians last Saturday. Geoff, the club's best & fairest winner last year, has given great service over the years and is still one of our finest players. Well done Geoff!
